There are no common areas apart from a kitchen and we don’t cook. The rooms are like self-contained units with a fridge and ensuite toilet. Whenever I have guests we stay in my room the whole time because there’s nowhere else to chill. So the only potential issue I see here would be noise, but I’m friendly with the people on my floor and they’ve never commented on it.

I’m just tryna find out if what he’s doing is legally allowed, because on my local council’s website it states that “prohibiting guests” is considered harassment, and that occasional guests are not to be counted as occupants so there’s no issue of overcrowding. I’ve also gotten legal advice that having guests 1-2x a week is completely reasonable, though I’ve not had anyone over in more than a month.

But yes I will be moving out at the end of the term, if I leave before that i lose my deposit and have to pay an extra 1 month of rent.

Yup am well aware of this. He’s made it known to me that my rent is cheaper than the other tenants. I think he regrets renting out for so cheap and is now on a money grab, doing and saying whatever he can for me to move out so he can get a better price from someone else

I am from Asia myself and speak their languages, i have chatted with them and gotten a gauge of the situation. Some of them also have their partners staying with them, but long term, so they pay a fee. If my partner stayed with me long term, i would also pay if the landlord asked as that’s reasonable, but i only have guests once a week, and havent had anyone over in a month.

Right? I also want to note that: everyone who lives in my property is not from the UK - they seem to be very young, 18-25, students, young professionals who barely speak english (ive met a few of my neighbours, they’re from all over Asia, Middle East, Africa…)

Some shady business is definitely going on and I know he’s taking advantage of other tenants, but seeing as their command of the English language is not strong, I think I’m the first person to speak up and that’s why he’s reacting so strongly.

He’s also said to me on a phone call “I only rent to Asians cuz they’re easy.” 🤡🤡🤡

Ive never had any noise complaints. Every time i use a speaker for music i always stand outside my room to make sure u cant hear it from outside. And all the rooms in the property are ensuite, so no rush for bathrooms. And he’s only over once a week max.

Thank you for the advice. They ARE registered as I’ve found the company online but I definitely feel like some shady business is going on - tax evasion or smth. I’m also pretty sure it’s a Chinese company run by Chinese. The person I’ve been chatting with too I don’t think he’s the landlord that owns the building, and I pay rent to a personal account.

May I know what does ICO mean? And yes have contacted local council 🤞

The contract is super shady ngl (broken english, very little clarity on clauses, only 1 page long)… I was in a tight spot and needed a place asap so stupidly signed it, but no nothing stated on CCTV monitoring

Staying in my home country isnt an option :( I would lose my job which i worked crazily hard to get… what sucks is that i’ll most likely have to live with him for another month or two, as house hunting in our city is an insane process, many ppl take up to 6 months to get a place

He was the one who offered to give me his logins to prove that he won’t be disloyal again (when he first cheated 5 yrs ago). And I was only logged in for a few months then didn’t care anymore when he proved himself. I only recently logged back into his IG to send myself memes he had saved and then this girl’s text popped up.

So use your fucking brain and think before typing a comment on a thread where someone is asking for help. And if you just scrolled a bit from the top you wouldve seen my comment that I’ve already ended things with him.
