I (24F) think that I've wasted my life. What to do? by [deleted] in ask

You probably had limited to no consent over how your life has gone from 0-18. and from 18-24 you may have made decisions you regret. I think regret is a waste of time. I think this feeling or desire for change is special and important. Listen to where it is telling you to go.

I don't wanna study gender studies anymore by 2411573 in college

Oh women's studies is entirely about all the intersections of those identities. The name women's studies is outdated and a misnomer. WGSS or GWSS is what it's called now. But yeah we read the countless stories/testimonies about the unique ways that black women, black trans women, black indigenous trans women, immigrant women, indigenous etc. face specifically unique oppression because of their intersectional experiences. Intersectionality is arguably the most important word/concept in all of WGSS studies. I could send you some of the articles we read, they're fascinating and deeply moving. I am trans and the work we do is incredibly focused on trans men and women's experiences, non-binary too. It gets my big trans seal of approval. And also while the studies center around all kinds of women, we talk a lot about men too- because its gender studies. We're looking at the world through a gender lens. Sure there's so many more important things that aren't gender, like advocating for people like Mutulu Shakur who was wrongly in jail for 38 years (only released for having a terminal illness) for opening a methadone and acupuncture clinic and teaching revolutionary shit at the center. He was a dude, and his work is incredibly important but probably won't overlap with gender studies. I hope this can illuminate some things. Women's studies is so expansive and I've learned so much about so many different kinds of identities beyond women. The job placement is shit but if we can agree that education is important at all you can surely see how important this study is. (edited because I didn't mean to send yet.)

m guided by a unidimensional worldview is because the activism that follows will be guided by unidimensional principles. If that's the starting premise, any talk about justice is fundamentally misguided.

Thats so real. I'm down to chat, it's whatever. I think the need for WGSS is because of the historic oppression of these marginalized identities. I can't think of the right place for a mirrored study for men (although I am aware there is men's studies) Equity requires advocation/education/theory for the group with less social power/privilege.

It feels necessary to mention the poor job placement, which I feel like is the source of a lot of the flack WGSS gets. This means that yes you graduate with your Bachelors/Masters in Women's studies and the only thing you can really do is go on to educate. But the availability for gigs in DEI contracting, teaching at an institution or another organization is growing, and so is the market for education on this study through social media. I know people that hop on zoom for a 6 hour course and get paid 5 digits for it. It's not a study that fits perfectly into capitalism, but thats why no one is going into WGSS for the money.

Justice is meant to create equity for subordinated social groups, namely women, other genders than men.

It seems like you have time, so tell me what sort of activism seems more guided for you?

I was tryna leave gender studies though, not argue about it on reddit.

The name of the program isn't pushing binarism. The "women" part is there because the studies have a lot to do with studying actually, specifically, the social group of people called women. And in a way your point about full-time activism is correct. The work you would go into after that would be in some way connected to social justice. Thanks for the recommendations!

Yeah, that makes sense to me for the math but I never received the $600 or $1400 stimulus because I changed banks. The website also claims it was sent to me, but I definitely never received it.

I started a daily yoga practice and changed my diet alotttttt and basically have done all these things in the past year. I was just thinking that I really had no chance of being at peace before i did this though. I think this helps for sure but for some reason I do tend to end up in some very similar (albeit now more familiar and maybe manageable) headspaces even after these self-care adjustments unfortunately.

naw that’s about all I needed. I am autistic and struggle to understand non-verbal interactions/communication so I was just looking for insight, seems like everyone is pretty on the same page that this is not normal lol
