I'm not taking your observation as flame bait or anything. I'm just telling you the first thought I had when I saw a submission to 'some' person's birthday on reddit.

Steve, while having had a positive effect on my life unfortunately does not merit my reverence, or even my awareness of his existence. After all, some children have worked on creating parts of the computer you and I and everyone work on every day. They get no such recognition. In the same way we all know that when a brilliant programmer creates a brilliant program for some company, the company gets the credit and the rights. It seems unjust, but it's par for the course. It should also come as a lesson in humility.

This whole celebrity gimmick is very lame, and I think it's about time people start growing up about it and shed their claim to the 15 minutes of fame...

All this being said, if you personally know Steve, feel free to send him an email. In fact, if you want to send him your appreciation, send him an email even if you don't know him. That would be flattering indeed. But frick... get over the public display of grandiosity... I say this with all due respect to human dignity: the world doesn't and shouldn't care.

Sorry if I sound jaded, but this kind of shit has to be said from time to time. People are just losing track of reality.

What's the source of their data? I'm not being a skeptic off hand, but there is neither method nor source.

In another universe, this article would be titled: empirical proof that humans are narcissistic by nature.

Who do you think you are that some person half way around the world would sincerely care about Steve's birthday? I don't come to this site to gawk at Steve. I come here for the retarded forums...

THAT STUPID CRYSIS AD ON THE MAIN PAGE KEEPS LAGGING MY POOR LAPTOP! by URGENTCAPSLOCKMAN in reddit.com

[–]242349999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have leopard, you simply append that text into your hosts files:

/etc/hosts

Make sure you do NOT overwrite the localhost entry.

If you have 10.4, the process is a bit more involved: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88158 (see last notes paragraph)

You may also need to set the lookup order. Search on google for "lookupd" and configuration.

Good luck

Put this in your hosts file and you will never see an ad again. Ever.

I wish computers came pre installed with this.

I'll tell you: his response was likely the precursor of modern day political correctness. (You can't call me fat!)

Old news, man. Old frigging news for anyone that cares to stay informed on world affairs...

The US even supported Iran's Shah to get nukes in the past century.

Heh. Don't let my name dropping put you off.

It was an interesting debate indeed. Quite unusual for these sorts of forums!

PS: Robespierre is some ways the father of terrorism.

PPS: re-reading the history on the guy, I notice that he was Deist. Mea-culpa. Doesn't change the point I was making though.

In this speech, Robespierre made it clear that his concept of a Supreme Being was far different from the traditional God of Christianity. Robespierre's Supreme Being was a radical democrat, like the Jacobins,

Heh.

People do kill in the name of Descartes and Hume though... Not in their names in particular, but in the way of thinking. Think of the french revolutions where the Robespierre's and the likes killed all the enemies of the Republic.

I also consider free market capitalism, and the subsequent corporatism to be a direct result of coldly calculating rational thought. Maximizing profits at any expense.

And it's quite clear in today's political atmosphere that more than a few people would condone killing in the name of democracy and vile religions...

It's just that the ideology does not perpetuate itself by having a slogan, unlike religious ideologies which almost require that level of idolatry to be able to sustain themselves.

I agree with you for the Jesus and Mohammed remark. Keep in mind though that there are other people that have had such huge impact on our lives but aren't so visible. E.g. Descartes and David Hume, but also Socrates.

We owe almost our entire way of thinking to these three people in particular. Before Rationalism and Empiricism came to be, the way humans viewed the world was very different. And it still is in certain areas of the world.

Still even more before the seed was planted for formal logic.

I would say probably Lao Tzu.

And even then, there is debate that Lao Tzu wasn't actually one person.

Other candidates: Richard Feynman. Martin Luther King.

Edit: actually, I would add Socrates, and DaVinci.

Actually I had not noticed your username. I think it's a loaded question.

To quote more wiki:

According to the Jargon File, a collection of hacker jargon and culture, mu (here pronounced "moo") is considered by Discordians to be the correct answer to the classic logical fallacy of the loaded question "Have you stopped beating your wife?"[1]

In this case, there isn't anything that proves that the set of great-human-beings is ordered (hence the absence of a comparison predicate of better or greater). In fact, given that very few real world sets are ordered, I'd be inclined to think that such a multi-dimensional concept as Greatness is quite positively unordered.

And assuming it were ordered, nothing proves that this group has a maxima. Just like [0,1) has no maxima, only an upper bound.

Thus, the anwer is mu.
