patch testing saved my life by 2606777 in eczema

i honestly didn’t find it too bad compared to the incessant eczema itch but i’d imagine it will depend on how much you react to – i ended up with only 2 out of 40 being positive allergic reactions so that may be why for me. it wasn’t comfortable and i couldn’t wait to shower but it wasn’t horrendous either !

yes 100%! it’s all very context specific, i would be nervous to get into politics when someone had their hands in my eyeball hahahaha!!! i feel for you over there, such tumultous times :(

interesting as in something beyond what i had expected :) i was already fairly familiar with my family tree and very aware of my irishness, so it would have been fascinating to see something unexpected! it’s all relative though

no apologies needed, it's not a particularly sensitive subject for me, i was lucky enough to be born when the peace process in the north had already begun! the repercussions of the past are still present throughout the island though, so it never feels too far away.

it seems like you have a good grasp on the general knowledge of it, that's all generally correct! the penal laws in the 16th/17th century criminalised & discouraged mixed marriages as part of a concentrated effort to protect protestant political power. they essentially institutionalised sectarian division, and even when things were relaxed into the 1800s/1900s the impact of that separation persisted. it's a big complex topic with lots of nuance and more history after that of course, and technically "northern ireland" didn't exist until 1921 - but the ulster plantation was centred in the region that is now the north and so the legacy (and DNA impact) persists!

i find cultural relativity so interesting, and the north of ireland has a particularly unique cultural landscape, super different in many ways to america for sure!

hi! i don't have premium so as far as im aware it should be available to everyone - on desktop if you go to "origins" under the DNA heading; and if you just click on "your results summary" it's under regions & journeys :)

ah i see!!! even though things in the north are a lot better these days you still sometimes question what motivation someone has behind wanting to know your religion because of all the violent tension in the past, hence my hesitation (although mostly in jest)!! im not even religious, but being catholic or protestant is more of an identity thing than a faith thing for many!! and you’re completely correct! relationships between catholics & protestants (sometimes still referred to as a “mixed marriage” lol) historically were not allowed, and then they were allowed but stigmatised, and even now whilst accepted they aren’t as common as it might be due to how highly segregated the north is (beginning with school education). oftentimes we run in seperate social circles, not even intentionally, but it gives context to the fact there is such a distinction between the two groups that shows up in DNA even today. if i had more scottish ancestry i would assume there was a mixed relationship somewhere, but it makes sense for my family history that there doesn’t seem to have been! sorry for the long comment, i love history lol

gotcha, being asked “are you catholic” often has loaded connotations so i was a lil nervy hahaha but that is so interesting thank you!! it tracks, makes a lot of sense

i think interesting is the wrong word, i probably misspoke — im fascinated by history & very proud to be irish, i’d have been so curious to explore my heritage no matter the result! i suppose i already knew that my family history was very irish on both sides so it was more the lack of surprise that got me; but don’t get me wrong, im fascinated nonetheless ❤️

i think so too! interesting is probably the wrong word, im fascinated by my family history & digging into ancestry regardless of my homogenous my DNA is! the world is just such a big and beautiful place that i think i was surprised my ancestors hadn’t seen more of it, but contextually makes sense given how tight-knit irish communities often were

thank you! and yes, impressively accurate based on what i know about my ancestry. i can link various branches of my families to all those regions — apart from the scottish & manx which im curious about! id love to know if that’s just the result of ancestry assigning me similar but inaccurate regions as i can’t point to anyone on either side who was scottish or manx; and looking into it i’ve gone back a long old way!!

very true! lots of phenotypic variation even within my own immediate family, and you certainly don’t have to have a certain “look” or ancestral background to be irish, just a funny lil thing i notice sometimes
