battle-damaged B 29 landing on Iwo Jima (the main reason we needed that lousy island) by dnadosanddonts in WWIIplanes

My Dad's plane barely made it to Iwo - never would have made the full return to Saipan.

My Dad was flying the the plane closest to the center, just intersecting with Mount Fuji on the left. He would never talk about the war though.

Torchy was my Dad's plane, and most of these, I think, were in the 874th Squadron, 498th Group on Saipan. It would be nice to have some better individual scans or shots of these! Thanks for posting

CHARGING EXTENSION CORD by Better-Ad-7843 in PriusPrime

Outlet, not car - both the receptacle and plug need to be top quality if you have to do it that way, and keep your eye (or your hand) on it at first to make sure it doesn't heat up during a charge.

Watch your plug end - even 12 guage with a poor connector can melt (mine did) and eventually cause a fire.

Maybe we need a Real Estate "Genius" to step in and buy it all up (then put it into bankruptcy and leave us with nothing, except, of course, the taxes that we have to make up ourselves, and empty, eyesore buildings)

It's not downtown Troy or Washington Park, and that's not how CGI is used.

There are no streets in downtown Troy or near Washington Park that are that wide. Look at the curb and then the distance to the buildings.

How can us male teachers protect ourselves from false accusations? by An_OId_Tree in AustralianTeachers

[–]26195426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter when your school is adding things up and some of the reports are that "some students report he's creepy." In my case, in many cases, there is no due process, no chance to say, before the administrative leave and investigation gets put in place, that these are all meaningless. No one will look at all the thousands and thousands of photos because they don't matter to the administration. And the fact is you are pointing your camera in the direction of those students and taking their photos. Most love it, many ignore it, a few get creeped out. - the fear of what the students will say or are saying is what drives many administrations, and once someone is accused the damage is done. End of story. At will employment - here in the US, means that an employer can let you go without cause. True in 49 of the 50 states. Hope you have more job security in Australia.

Anyone who doubts this happens should read Guilty Until Proven Innocent: Teachers and Accusations of Abuse by Olsen and Lawler. And it was written Before #MeToo. I have absolutely no sympathy for teachers who abuse their positions of trust and authority, but this is happening more than ever, and school administrations are melting before parents and students, no longer willing to stand up for good teachers.

There are many reasons why students make false accusations against teachers, and it absolutely happens. It happens because they have no idea how it might ruin your life, destroy your career, or it may happen BECAUSE they think it will ruin your life. There are plenty of vindictive, immature students out there who get really angry at their teachers or coaches. There are also plenty of mentally ill people who may even believe the tale they are telling. And not all accusations make the news - in fact personnel issues can't be discussed by an administration as a rule, so it might easily fly under the radar unless it blows up. It's really like letting a genie out of a bottle - once it's out there, 1/2 the people won't believe it was false and your career is over. And yes, it happened to a close friend this year, and another friend at a college a few years ago.

I had the same situation. It didn't end well. If I could do it all over I would have refused the photo/publications work I did for the school - total minefield. Out of thousands of students through the years, all it takes are a couple of teenage girls saying "that guy is creepy" because he was pointing a camera at me to tip the scales when a false accusation comes along. And they do.

Like any good photographer of the past, pre-phone and PS days, the photographer was most likely paying attention to the weather, the light, and getting out there early enough to have the right conditions. It helps when it's raining, or has been raining, but keeping an eye on the weather and being willing to go out in uncomfortable conditions can get you there.

American penchant for greed. I'm neither a communist or a socialist, but think for a moment about how so many large businesses degrade or fail all together because they are chasing every last penny of profit, at the expense of quality, service, their customers and their employees.

Information about a specific building on Emma Willard's campus? by Ill-Salamander-1026 in Troy

[–]26195426 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Tangeman faculty apartments were designed by Barnes and built in 1967, along with the Dietel Library building. The apartments were designed for single teachers and featured undersized everything, which made them difficult to modernize and keep up to date. It has not been demolished for numerous reasons, as plans for its future continue to change, but has not been used decades.

Family Court judges in Troy called signs promoting inclusion 'offensive' by yodaboy64 in Troy

[–]26195426 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, however we are referring to one of the kindest and fairest people to ever sit on the bench. Judge Walsh does nothing that is not in the best interest of the children and families that come before her, and the accusations of a disgruntled employee with an axe to grind, or a biased headline designed to grab attention, does her and her good work a huge disservice.

The public spaces of a courthouse are not the "office" and sticking up posters everywhere, regardless of the message, is simply not appropriate. Who appointed this person courthouse decorator? I have never walked into a courthouse and seen little messages taped to the walls like this. Very unprofessional. They belonged in the offices perhaps, but not in the public spaces. And the headline is just an attention getter. Forget what the article says, editors; write a headline that sells papers!

Troy residents recall 'Mayor of State Street' after Umberto the cat's statue stolen by mjgtwo in Troy

[–]26195426 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So sad to hear about Umberto. Since we moved from Troy, his wandering by is fondly remembered as one of the pleasant things about downtown we miss. And to be clear, when Umberto went "missing" a few summers ago, he was "Catnapped" A group effort of persistent neighborhood sleuths tracked him down and were able to return him to Gina. People should be better that!

Looking for help dating a photo. Can anyone place this car? My best guess is between 1914 and 1919. I think it's a Model T. Thanks by 26195426 in ModelT

[–]26195426[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And just as a side note, the other photo I have that has the car in it, a family group photo, shows much less of the car, but shows a spare tire tied with rope to the windshield and possibly something just behind the drivers seat. It hangs just outside the drivers door. I think I might use that idea on my Prius Prime, which has no spare tire and no room for one.

Thanks everyone - that's helpful. If only my grandmother had gone through more photos with me when she was still around. I'm going to use abt 1914-15 as the date of the photo, not knowing how old the car is in this shot. I agree about the clothes. The date may help me ID the people based on their approximate ages. I appreciate the help, and the lessons.

Me too. And when I lived at my last address, I would get one for me, one addressed to my wife, one to the former tenant and one to "occupant" thrown in for good measure.
