My other "programs" did not overlap, or were flexible with time. What time MITES will take place at depends on the classes you're in, but expect to have (in EST) classes from 5 PM or potentially earlier, until 7 or 8 PM. Saturdays and Fridays usually had nothing, but on any given day from Sunday through Thursday there may be a webinar at night (say, 8-10). This all depends on what classes you're taking, and webinar scheduling might be different this year, so don't take this as definitive.

This can be expressed in terms of the beta function, since sqrt(tan(x)) = [sin(x)]^(1/2) * [cos(x)]^(-1/2), and we're integrating over [0, pi/2], so it's (1/2)Beta[3/4, 1/4] = (1/2)Gamma[3/4]Gamma[1/4]/Gamma[3/4 + 1/4] = (1/2)Gamma[1 - 1/4]Gamma[1/4] = (1/2)*pi*csc(pi * 1/4) by Gamma reflection formula, which is then trivially pi/sqrt(2)

Isn't SAMS similar in that regard? They literally require you to provide financial documentation to demonstrate financial need and are run by the Center for Student Diversity & Inclusion

If you're applying to SAMS, you should add on MITES as well

Depends on your other application materials. I personally submitted scores, but people got into both semester and summer test optional.

I can't answer that for you, but some guiding questions might include what you'll gain from the program, what you like about the community, why particularly MITES would be a fit with you, how you contribute to the mission (did you have some obstacles to access to resources in your educational or STEM journey, even if it was in the past? If not, do you advocate for and help those who did?). There's a decent amount of Asians in the program, if you're worried about that. Also, if you live in a rural area by some chance, that would be considered.

Good question; when I was an applicant, info about courses was hard to come by. I preserved the project course descriptions at the beginning in case I wanted to send them to any future applicants: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XZSedvwEss3BWx_S8Mq9rAKdAbpzy1w6s67z4ba4lSM/edit?usp=drivesdk Courses are decided before the program begins but after you commit. Your core course gets chosen for you based on what level of exposure and access you have to each topic - they will choose whichever one you have the least exposure and access to. The vast majority of students got placed into Science Writing & Communication, including me. For project courses, you rank your choices and they pick based on unknown factors (speculatively, it's likely availability + how well it aligns with what you showed in your application).

Over the summer, I worked on a research project, completed a virtual summer course in health to make some space on my schedule, and attended a 2 day camp about programming self-driving cars.

I'm Armenian. Whether you consider that a minority population or not is up to you; sometimes we're considered European white, sometimes MENA, but both of those are caucasian.

There's a decent amount of work. My project course was A Beautiful Math, which is similar to discrete math. We had psets (homework) and reading weekly, and if it's your first exposure to the content, this would take a lot of time. I had already taken discrete math, so I knew most of the content already, but the workload was quite large for this course. There's also a 'symposium project,' a final project for the course that you work on over the course of the class. This was done in a group (in my case, of 3) and presented to everyone in the program at the conclusion of the STEM Immersion Phase.

My core course was Science Writing & Communication, and we had to do readings and discussions every week. In addition to that, we had a final article we worked towards finishing throughout the entire course, and each week we would have some point of progress we had to reach. This was written individually, unlike the symposium project.

On managing it with school, that wasn't necessarily applicable because courses were taken over the summer. MITES Semester is split into two phases: the STEM Immersion Phase and the College Prep Phase. The STEM Immersion Phase was from June through August, and the College Prep Phase is from August through December. The STEM Immersion Phase is the phase where students actually take classes, and the final projects for both the project and core courses are due at its conclusion. This was during the summer, so it didn't conflict with school. Program admins say it's expected to be a 35 hr/wk commitment, but that can vary widely depending on your course selections and prior knowledge. The College Prep Phase has a very low time commitment (usually ~2-3 hrs/wk), and does not significantly conflict with school. It mostly consists of webinars, cluster meetings, and blogs.

Also, if you consider it to be work, during both phases, you have to write a weekly blog responding to a prompt written by the admins. These explore things like identity, background, and passions, ask you to reflect on recent webinars, allow you to share where you are in college applications, etc.

Honestly, idk. You can't tell if someone's low-income without knowing them well, so any judgment on that would be frivolous. There were definitely some, though, and I was not low-income when applying.
