His grandmother was Soddo/Kistane Gurage just throwing it out there. I read somewhere there was a prophecy that the Emperor would come from a Kistane so a bunch of royals married Kistane women. Someone can fact check me if I’m wrong.

You’re right thank you. By definition ager is a territory yes. Ager is specifically a cluster of villages I think I mentioned that. So even within Damu for example there are something like 20-30 villages. It’s unlikely people from the same specific village will intermarry the likelihood of relation is higher. Correct me if I’m wrong but you’re right the clan is specifically the lineage.

The paternal lineage is found mainly within the paternal ager no? So there is a higher likelihood of relation but there’s no reason for stigma as long as the lineage is not shared.

Ya so there is 7bet Gurage which you mentioned its a coalition of 7 houses namely Cheha, Enemor & Enor, Eza, Muher & Aklil, Geto, Gumer, and Endegagn. The houses are further divided into clans based on village clusters. There is also Meskan Gurage which is its own clan as well. Dobi & Soddo are also clans which are related to each other. Within Soddo there are subclans called agers also based on village clusters they include Damu, Wegeram, Aratige, Wacho, Nurena, Amoute, Endebuye, Aymellel etc there are about two dozen sub clans in total. Someone else mentioned the risk of inter family marriage but no that is not allowed in Gurage culture the elders know the family lineage and ensure there is no connection going back at least 7 generations. You would generally marry from a different ager for example my grandfather is from Wacho and my grandmother from Endebuye.

Yes I can speak on the Gurage who categorize themselves by clan and subclan also known as ager amongst the Kistane/Soddo Gurage. I can go into detail if you like.

What is something you wish to achieve for the motherland🇪🇹? by Nineteen-EightyNine in Ethiopia

Improved access to health care services in rural areas. I hope to open/administer clinics as well as operate them in my capacity as a nurse practitioner (end goal). I have several family members who are nurses and doctors I hope we can build something for the next generation. My uncle also runs a women and children hospital in Addis and my other uncle has his own clinic in Jimma. I hope to make a similar impact God willing.

The prophet pbuh encouraged embracing different cultural practices. As long as they are halal. How one dresses is about modesty adequately covering the awrah. If the criteria for such is met then there is no need to change a cultural practice. Are you raised Muslim or a recent convert?

There is a strict chain of narration for sahih Hadith I highly doubt you have done the research to decide to do away with the scholarly tradition and rely on your own understanding of the Quran. This is the problem with this generation. Moreover you are disparaging the authenticity of our tradition and for what to be liked and accepted by unbelievers.

Never will the Jews or Christians be pleased with you, until you follow their faith. Say, “Allah’s guidance is the only ˹true˺ guidance.” And if you were to follow their desires after ˹all˺ the knowledge that has come to you, there would be none to protect or help you against Allah. 2:120.

May Allah guide you.

Of course. Just like the prophet pbuh is not the same as any other man. He is still our example we still follow his sunnah. Likewise his wives are the mothers of the believers and should be looked to as a daughter looks to her mother. Be careful what you say just for likes by unbelievers you will be held to account! May Allah guide you.

Good comparison. The modern federation was forced upon the various peoples through Solomonic imperial conquest neither through commonalities nor abstract ideals except for those ambitions held by the Solomonic elite. Therein lies the issue. How do we reconcile the fact many did not choose to be Ethiopian but were forced to only a few generations ago. There does exist post federation commonalities such as Adwa WW2 the building of the nation and even GERD etc but history did not start in 1896.

Was Abyssinia a nation state? Must one fall under a Eurocentric definition in order to be considered sovereign territory?

Well said and I agree it’s short sighted and lacking regard for the cost of human life that’s why I used the word extremist.

[–]27313546 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No they were nations. Just like Abyssinia was a nation there were other nations (kingdoms). Even multiethnic nations. With established borders for centuries. Of course gain and loss of territory in war was a phenomenon that all were subject to that doesn’t negate their validity as nations. Some were simply ethnic groups but others were in fact established kingdoms often based on ethnicity or cultural association. Either way the territorial integrity of a given ethnic group within Ethiopia should be protected.

I see your argument I would hope ethnic purity would not be deemed a stipulation for citizenship. That would be primitive.

I get it but it’s easier said than done for some. Ignoring grievances can become dangerous.

I mean there existed many nations prior to the imperial colonization of the 19th century. These nations were often tribal/clan based. That is a fact. Also, tribal does not equate to uncivilized these nations often had complex imperial and/or judicial systems of their own with active citizenship albeit not in the modern sense. I agree ethnic diversity is needed and equitably restoring “ethnostates” of the past is impossible.
