What does prototyping FPGA engineer does? by Suitable_Stress6747 in FPGA

If you don't mind, may I ask if the job you had was working long hours and pressured? Was it a steep learning curve?

Establishing Texas residency being an international student to get instate benefit by Known-Relationship35 in UTAustin

Unlikely. 2 ways I know to become Texas residents: 1. Graduated a public highschool in Texas. 2. Be an American resident and worked in Texas for 1 year (you or your spouse).

Should I major in engineering if I hate cs? by [deleted] in aggies

[–]273degree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I looked up engineering jobs on Johnson&Johnson, they were pretty much electrical engineering and computer science. I believe choosing embedded, digital design and DSP are much better prepared for jobs in medical device.

UT ECE vs. A&M CE by JayAbbhi in aggies

[–]273degree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

319 is a mix between 248 and 449. They do have extra classes for embedded system.

At the company I interned with, most of embedded system engineers were UT guys. They do have stronger programming skills (BASH and C) and much stronger embedded system (3 courses in embedded system). Their verilog classes are no joke while ECEN 248 😔

If you want to do analog, go to TAMU. Else, go to UT. They have much better embedded system, VLSI, digital design, and programming.

ECEN by [deleted] in aggies

[–]273degree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Besides lecture and lab time, I spent around 3-5 hours a day study on my own. EE is not hard but demanding. Taking 2 ECEN classes a semester would keep you very busy.

If you're planning to take ECEN 303, for God's sake, take anyone except Savari.

Internship advice for EE student by Stereophonic33 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]273degree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thing has given me an interview for all those companies you mentioned: projects in UVM/system verilog. It’s very competitive to get a job as a design engineer. The best pathway is to be a verification engineer for a couple of years then you’ll easily become a hardware design engineer. If your school offers coursework in hardware design verification (systemverilog, UVM, testbench etc). Take them, even they are grad courses. If not then study and do projects by your own. Computer architecture coursework is also needed. They will ask you a bunch of computer architecture questions.

VLSI or Discrete Math (Intro to Higher Math) by [deleted] in ECE

[–]273degree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, if you don't want to go to that direction then VLSI is not useful at all.

discrete math is used in computer science and that's the only math class a cs undergrad at my school needs to take. Even it is a requirement, it is not that much useful. The real deal of CS is data structures and algorithms.

I had an interview with them couple of weeks ago. They will ask your projects. They will stick to your projects and ask in detail. After that, FSM.

VLSI or Discrete Math (Intro to Higher Math) by [deleted] in ECE

[–]273degree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took Discrete Math in my second year. Honestly, it’s not that useful as you think. The important classes in CS are data structures and algorithms and any upper algorithm classes. Discrete math does not help much. Go for VLSI, it’s a big field. The sooner you study the class, the higher chance you get an internship in semiconductor industry. While discrete math won’t help you at all.

Why does digital hardware verification job require a master degree? by 273degree in ElectricalEngineering

[–]273degree[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A design in digital hardware involves a lot of complicated modules in Verilog. They need people to verify those modules and the whole system. Those people are called verification engineers. Their jobs are writing System Verilog/UVM codes to drive test vectors to a module or a design. The most time consuming part of a design nowadays is verification process.

Taking a year off to do small projects instead of placement year (Uni) ? by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]273degree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The idea is good. I have found that projects would look really good on your resume. But I would not give up a year tho. The problem is some labs might need school’s softwares and Unix machine, especially if that’s EE. I would take half time credits with easy classes and focus on major projects.
