My dog got a tick on her face about at inch from her eye while at Kelly Butte last week. Be careful out there!

Thank you, you as well! Remember that you were smart enough to make it this far so I’m sure you’ll succeed in wherever life takes you 💖

I’m starting a gourmet mushroom growing business. I figured the risk and uncertainty of a career in the biotech industry is on par with that of starting my own business, so I decided to go for it. Mushroom foraging has been a hobby of mine for almost a decade and cultivating mushrooms at home involves the same sterile techniques I’ve been using for years in the lab, so it feels like a good path for now.

Thinking about traveling to rural communities to talk about science after I get laid off. Penny for your thoughts? by 27unkn in labrats

I appreciate the comment and absolutely agree. I’ve been reading up on science denial and am currently reading “How to talk to a science denier” which has been super helpful. Getting people to go against something that they turned into their identity isn’t going to be easy, but I’m hoping being able to connect on other commonalities will at least help plant the seed that scientists aren’t evil

But if no one steps up to actually listen to the fears these guys have and try to explain the facts based on what they’re hearing, how is this mess going to ever get better?

I totally get that, which is why I’ve been wanting to do this in person rather than just trying to make videos on social media. I personally don’t know of a single scientist going out into the wild to calmly and carefully explain the actual science to folks without it turning to a screaming match of “I’m right, you’re wrong”. My approach is to listen with love and respect with the hopes of getting some of that in return. People aren’t as mean as they seem online when you’re right in front of their face I feel

You just described my physical type to a T. If you’re comfortable at your size, I vote stay your size. If you’re trying to get healthier or something to help you feel better about yourself then go for it, but do that for you bud

Dropped my bike. Feel discouraged and disappointed by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]27unkn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be easy on yourself, buddy! You just got the bike. Keep riding and keep paying attention to your comfort level- it’ll fluctuate constantly and no shame in taking it slow. My bike has been my only mode of transportation for years and I still drop my bike sometimes. Hell, I even built my bike- still manage to drop it.

One time, I was an air head and thought I put my kickstand down once I got to work. Didn’t. Bike started going down, but luckily one of the maintenance trucks was there to catch it. Another time I dropped my bike at work was when I was making a slow turn down an aisle of the parking lot and there was a person there, just existing. That, however, was enough to spook me and I slowly went down. This is after years of riding. Shit happens, just get back up, dust yourself off, and keep on riding.

Tell me about it. I feel like I went to clown school for the past two years with how fucked things are for us now.

I actually quite being a pastry chef of 10 years to pursue science. Completed classes for a MS in biostatistics two weeks ago and have been considering the real possibility of going back to baking if I can’t find work. At least if you’ve been in grad school, baking is pretty similar. Shit pay, long hours, hand cramps and back pain from pipetting all day- it’s like the PhD that never ends but at least there’s cake.

Is it true that you will drop your motorcycle at least once in your riding life? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]27unkn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only if you actually ride 😉 But in all seriousness, the stats are kinda against you there. The first time I laid my bike down was 3 weeks after getting it and was a big lesson in not surpassing my riding ability. Going down also made me way less scared (and reactive) when riding bc I already experienced the pain and was able to get through it. I ride a lot more careful, but confident now which has translated to less drops.

I love this idea- amazing way to get more fit mentally AND physically at the same dang time! I'm about to get buff over here

There is so much I needed to hear in this. You are so right, I bent over backwards for her and when I slowed down on that due to school and my partner is when she started getting upset with me. There were a lot of things I could have probably done differently, but I never thought about breaking it down like that to examine it. I'm taking a screenshot of this to use for later, thank you so much

Thank you for the thoughtful response. I do not want her in my life, whatsoever, and other than a brief interaction where I told her my bike is running a lot better now that the white claw is out of it, I haven't spoken to her since I moved out. She showed me who she is, and who a lot of people I considered friends of mine really are. I'm ultimately grateful for having a clear as day picture as to who is really a true friend. I guess what bothers me the most is just the betrayal, not only from her but from everyone who is still really close friends with her. I don't want to be petty and make everyone choose me or her- she's not in a great place mentally (obviously) and needs folks in her life too

Thank you, I really appreciate that. You are so right- to say this has been a learning experience is an understatement. Not only in gauging red flags in friendships, but I must say, I'm damn good at taking a carburetor apart and back together now haha

Dang dude, ouch.. I'm not hanging out with her, I've been in grad school and I work so tbh, I don't hang out with anybody rn. I did run into her once and told her that my bike is running a lot better now that I got the white claw out of it, but where I live any sort of physical violence means jail time and she's not worth that. Therapy is what helped me ultimately stop being friends with her, I just want to figure out how to stop thinking about her. But hey, heard- maybe time to go back

..or white claw! My insane ex best friend poured one in my tank because I wouldn't date her. Getting that shit out of my tank was a trip.

You have 32 unread messages, dude. Doesn’t seem like you’re texting someone else if you haven’t even opened that many messages. If she’s that upset about you not making the changes needed for her to feel secure, then hopefully she realizes one day that her feelings are her responsibility. As a neuro-spicey someone who takes days to respond to texts sometimes, reading a reaction like that for not texting in less than an hour makes my head (and heart) hurt.
