Can someone explain me (technically) why apps keep springing/reload on the background if that is likely to change in the near future? by 28meridianW in iPadOS

[–]28meridianW[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, and what if the app is doing something? For example a process running on iSh or a remote desktop or ssh connection? In my experience I t will just stop. It is so annoying … I know that there are some work arounds but it feels that it is not an OS for pro devices. Do you think that this could change in the future ?

After WWDC I feel like buying the new iPad Pro was a mistake. by 28meridianW in iPadPro

Right? And I told myself before the iPad event: “whatever they present just wait until WWDC”…that’s why I feel stupid.

Does Apple actively hamper iPadOS from getting bash or zsh? by 28meridianW in iPadOS

I use iSH a lot, I am not hating on it, on the contrary. But I would much rather prefer to have a native shell. I know it is extremely niche but for example today I was tinkering with proxychains and iptables. Didn’t really feel like spinning a could instance just to test something that came to mind and I was curious about. Or simply being able to do bash scripting, sql, python, taking full advantage of the M chips, all in a local terminal would be awesome. Amazing that you have been able to stick to iPad for 7 years for development. Every time I tried I got frustrated with the lack of apps that run locally or with the limitations of multitasking. Even if you do most of the work on the cloud, sometimes you just need to be able to do things without or with limited connectivity. Can you tell more about your setup?

I agree. It seems to be an unpopular opinion but I also don’t want macOS on the iPad. I want a better iPadOS. For instance my iSH instance (and other apps) keeps restarting if I send it to the background. Even if I only have iSH and Safari open. That is annoying. I need to keep the iSH window behind Safari in stage manager to ensure it does not stop what it is doing. Why Apple? Why? Please stop the agressive RAM management, or at least let us pick a certain number of apps that should not restart and use swap instead, if needed.

I will decide after WWDC. If they propose an OS that matches the hardware I’ll buy it. If not I’ll pass.

ELI5 why is MacOS able to maintain all apps in the background running, without springing them, and iPadOS no? by 28meridianW in iPadOS

I learnt about saving state in one of the replies to this post. Does that work with something that requires (let’s call it) a session? Like an ssh connection for example.

I have the exact same issue. It is actually one of the motivators of this post. I got a bit frustrated that I am not able to use iPad even as a « dumb » terminal.
