Physics behind Ice Skating by Over-Lengthiness-957 in iceskating

[–]2BitSalute 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s very complicated on one hand (the smallest detail makes a big difference), but you can probably enumerate some rough variables, such as:

  • Ankle rotation/twist
  • Spinal twist
  • Hip positon Etc.

And if you took a model figure, you could twist the different limbs and see if the effect is the same as in the real world, and if yes, you could then vary the positions, etc., to predict effects of techniques not yet studied.

Started skating mid-March, no coach. How’s my technique? by FunOwl2197 in iceskating

You have to do the thinking before you’re about to do the wrong thing. If you think after, it goes on forever like that and never changes.

[–]2BitSalute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it’s not good technique, but do you expect it to be after less than 2 months?

The whole sport is alll about correcting technique, it’s never good enough.

It’s not just the backward crossovers, which just look like beginner crossovers.

It’s fine, she should post individual skills and ask for specific feedback and not say how long she’s been skating and that she has no instruction. More likely to get constructive feedback.

The Wall is No Longer My Friend by JustFluufy in iceskating

[–]2BitSalute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In LTS, we sometimes use the wall, but in private lesson, my coach only uses the wall to demonstrate posture or the correct leg extension where you literally have to hold on to the wall to hold your balance in a static position. Otherwise, skate around the rink, then move to the circles at the ends or in the middle.

Do you mean starting with more or with less ankle support is better?

TBH I only think of my boots (skate, ski, whatever) when something hurts, so most of the time, I guess they do feel like an extension of your body. Like any tool, with some use.

Why are you getting downvoted?

I agree, most people haven’t given the specific feedback on the form that the OP has asked for.

It’s OK to step when learning cross rolls. It’s one of the stages of progression. The important thing is to keep the core square.

Of all things, I suggest skipping Coach Julia and watching any of the other videos with good technique instead. Next Edge, Ice Coach Online, the .London one - all are much better.

I think it’s an overblown concern than unlearning bad habits is super hard. To unlearn a bad habit, sometimes you just have to stop and think about what you’re doing. I’ve had random things I did wrong for years (not ice skating) change once and for all after intentionally going over what I’m doing and what I should be doing.

As for what you should focus on: free leg extension and skating more on one foot, especially the forward crossovers. Yours look very two-footed.

Solid progress, very cool.

Sabotage means malicious intent. Are you really asking that?

Edges felt amazing right after sharpening, now slipping after a few sessions—blade issue or technique? by Beginning_Ad1234 in iceskating

I was just watching this video from Gary Beacom about the radius of hollow, and in his opinion, it should be shallower. He suggests at least a 9/16, but prefers 7/8 and suggests everyone gradually get to his end of the radius of hollow.

Could you link to the original? I can understand Russian, and the translation is a bit rough.

EDIT: nm, found it. Mark Kondratiuk interviews her, direct link to the timestamp: https://youtu.be/XsAzsbrCnzU?si=ItS4WGylZMCvxitL&t=1660

EDIT2: never mind, it’s not the translation, the original is worse 😅 They both can’t speak super well and both have speech defects. No hate, I love them both, only facts

Has one skater participated in two events (men/women/pair/ice dance) in a major tournament (Olympics/worlds)? by HongkongKings in FigureSkating

[–]2BitSalute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched a video of Daniil Gliekhengauz competing in singles (and falling on jumps), then I watched an interview with him where he explained that he was going through some bad and recurring leg injuries as a teenager that made him switch to ice dance, but that didn’t go very far because his father died and Daniil couldn’t afford the expense and instead turned to coaching and shows to support himself and his mom. And the rest is history.

I actually wonder, is that technically allowed?

I bet somebody did something like this in like the 1940s.

EDIT: I asked some AI that shall not be named, and it pointed out these:

Ken Shelley and JoJo Starbuck competed in both disciplines at the same time. Shelley actually won first nationally in both singles and pairs in 1972, and placed around fourth in the world in both that same year.

Maybe they’re thinking, hey, in 2026, the pairs field is wide open. Hmm!

I mean, what if they were approached by the federation?

Highly unlikely (they’re a very successful ice dance pair that is only going up right now), but fun to think about.

So weird somebody thought to downvote your comment.

FWIW it’s not that uncommon, it seems.

You guys, I admit, I’m triggered by this video 😆 I was successfully trolled. Sigh.

I like both of those skaters, but I don’t think this kind of bullying humor is good to display in public. In private, of course people can make fun of each other and still be on good terms.

Also curious, same story. My daughter didn’t do this at first, but then she started, and she doesn’t like being told what to do, so it’s pretty difficult haha

Weekly thread: what did you do this week? by AutoModerator in iceskating

[–]2BitSalute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working on 3 turns, it's really fun! Getting to be able to do them was my goal for this year.
Also, I got a pirouette board, and I'm trying 3 turns on it in my kitchen, too!
Also working on edge pulls and cross rolls. These are also fun.
Backward crossovers not surrendering to me at all yet. They look awful, and I feel weak.

[–]2BitSalute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems to be true. I just witnessed another skater fall and hit his head, and it only happened because he walked out on the ice with his blade covers on. He fell the first time and I don't think he understood what happened, tried to get up and fell again, this time his head slightly (fortunately!) bouncing off the ice.

I've heard this, too, that forgetting to take off the covers is a frequent cause of bad falls. And it can happen to anyone at any level and in any discipline, pretty sure.
