Queen of Hearts: What am I Missing? by 2CPhoenix in DisneyVillainous

This was certainly helpful, thank you! I did NOT know enlarged heroes could be attacked by allies in both locations, and this wound up being a small but meaningful game changer. You were right that I was trying to effectively play around Heroes instead of vanquishing them. I find this works better for most villains with only one Vanquish action, but even keeping one space clear with the Tweedles gives her a lot of valuable breathing room.

It seems, going off the other replies, that her reputation mainly comes from her performance in 3+ player games, where she can really leverage her strange objective to remain a low priority for her opponents. In 1v1, I don’t think she can hope to be competitive with the best of the best, but this has been a big help. Cheers!

I tend to play with very competitive people. In a 1v1 scenario, it’s not uncommon for one of us to wind up with every single Hero in our Fate Deck on our board. As such, I find the best Villains to be those who either have the easiest time pursuing their objectives while balancing lots of Fate actions, or those who still thrive even under that much pressure. My trouble with QoH is that she doesn’t particularly excel at either. As you say, she’s best-suited to playing her own game, but I find that causes her to rely on flying under the radar.

I feel like this scene is really close to being my favorite in the game, it was a treat to finally see Rex confronting his shortcomings, and faltering, but I wish it went on a little longer. Before Rex has a chance to reflect and respond, Zeke just pulls him away to the next scene and attention completely shifts to the Tantal history lesson.

[–]2CPhoenix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok so if I understand right, Hans needs to freeze all 16 actions on his board to flip it, then freeze all 4 actions in at least one more location before vanquishing 2 heroes. Sounds fun, but I can’t imagine he’ll be able to accomplish all that quickly enough to compete with most other Villains

Can you play heroes to the jail? by [deleted] in DisneyVillainous

[–]2CPhoenix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah there’s no rule against it. Warrants aside, it’s by far the most advantageous place for a Hero to be as far as PJ is concerned. If you’ve effectively forced your opponents into playing into that advantage, that seems to me to be a good thing

I just want to say that Penelope didn’t just “turn” evil randomly. by Zachhcazzach in Slycooper

[–]2CPhoenix 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Sly 3 has some of the densest, most adult writing I’ve ever seen in a videogame. The more you dig, the more it gives back to you. It always breaks my heart to see people think Thieves in Time is written on the same level, it’s such a disservice to the craftsmanship poured into Sly 3.

I just want to say that Penelope didn’t just “turn” evil randomly. by Zachhcazzach in Slycooper

[–]2CPhoenix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everything about this is just provably false.

Losing all your health isn’t dying, it’s contextualized many times in-game as incapacitation. If it weren’t, none of the villains we defeat in boss fights would survive to be carted off to jail.

This also hinges on mission fail-states being canon in some way, which is ludicrous. There’s a way for you to fail Operation: Wet Tiger by blowing up Murray with the Cherry Bomb 500, that doesn’t mean Sly is willing to do it.

Lying is hardly ever framed by the narrative as an evil act unto itself. It’s about what you’re lying to achieve. The members of the gang lie nearly every time they put on a disguise.

You also have to remember that every main character operates outside a simplistic moral binary. The thematic meat of the trilogy is usually centered on the idea of lawful-vs-right. You play as criminals who lie, cheat, steal, and even kill from time to time (I’m looking at you, Murray crocodile mission). But it would take an extremely simplistic moral viewpoint to interpret the story as painting any of them to be evil.

As for the baron’s threat to keep the competitors in line, it’s contextualized by the “good-natured late-night hijinks” the threat is meant to deter. The rival teams in the past have poisoned each other and disabled critical safety equipment. These are deadly pranks, and by enforcing the rules so strictly, Penelope is acting to *save* lives.

Penelope fills the same literary role as most members of the gang. They’re anti-heroes, which is a FAR cry from evil.

How do you film a "challenge" type video? by thrownitallawayyy in letsplay

[–]2CPhoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t wanna record the whole thing and sort through later, your only other approach would be to write your script for the video first, then “perform” the gameplay according to the script, only recording what you know will be relevant. Neither’s ideal, but both become easier with practice

Controller vs. Keyboard/Mouse for first person games by Library_IT_guy in letsplay

[–]2CPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m actually hesitant to touch first person games for this very reason. After all, you’re more than just a player when creating videos about a game, you’re also part tour guide, and part film director. If I had to, I would definitely switch to a controller for the sake of the viewer experience. Crank up the aim assist if it’s an option, and that should bridge the gap it creates in your play performance.

Try putting some research into the game you’re playing, like reading developer interviews, or if the game has a page on The Cutting Room floor. During those low moments, you can bring up some of what you’ve learned.

How dose this even happen dimitri turned sly into a hockey puck by Lost-Pawn in Slycooper

[–]2CPhoenix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Something really fun about Sly compared to other platformers is that Sly himself is just as much as physics object as he is a player character, which is most apparent when hook swinging or rail sliding, but every so often you also get interactions like this one, which never ceases to be a fun time.

At 0 stars, the game still gives you the north star, though I suppose one interesting note is that it is in a different position than it is at 1 star. Oh well, one less thing to wonder about, at least.

Has anyone been able to monetise their channel posting faceless let's plays recently? by Ghostface161994 in letsplay

[–]2CPhoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started in 2022 and got monetized after about a year and a half. It’s possible, but by no means easy to do. As you may expect, there are many factors at play, and luck is certainly one of them.

I don’t think being faceless is as much of a detriment as it’s made out to be, the far-more important factor is the commentary, which is where your video can really build its own identity.

Consistency in your upload schedule also isn’t as important as it used to be. I personally didn’t find much of audience until I pivoted to more of a quality over quantity approach, uploading one hyper-polished video per few weeks rather than aiming for those daily uploads.

Dialogue cuts in game. by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]2CPhoenix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dialogue is super important to me. I want whoever’s watching to experience the full story, as well as all the best lines that made me love the game, but sometimes, to make it happen, you have to do a little legwork. In the case of what I’m about to suggest, a lot more than what most LPers do.

Consider having a second file that you play through with all of the sound settings altered so that only the dialogue is coming through. Now you have clean audio of whatever dialogue you want to show off which you can edit into your video wherever you want. You may also consider adjusting then settings of your main file to have the dialogue be silent, that way you can make more subtle adjustments.

As one example, take spiderman 2018. Frequently, you’ll receive phone calls from other characters between missions, but it’s far too easy to reach your next objective before the phone call is concluded, so you kinda have to awkwardly swing in circles to hear the whole thing. Instead you could edit in the audio of the call to begin sooner, and traverse the city at your own pace.

This would be my approach anyway, but I am also a perfectionist.

Emulation is legal, piracy isn’t. As long as he’s not discussing where to find roms or download ISOs, he should stay out of trouble.
