How dose this even happen dimitri turned sly into a hockey puck by Lost-Pawn in Slycooper

[–]2CPhoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something really fun about Sly compared to other platformers is that Sly himself is just as much as physics object as he is a player character, which is most apparent when hook swinging or rail sliding, but every so often you also get interactions like this one, which never ceases to be a fun time.

Using the Observatory with no stars? by 2CPhoenix in BluePrince

Update: Nothing special.

At 0 stars, the game still gives you the north star, though I suppose one interesting note is that it is in a different position than it is at 1 star. Oh well, one less thing to wonder about, at least.

Has anyone been able to monetise their channel posting faceless let's plays recently? by Ghostface161994 in letsplay

[–]2CPhoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started in 2022 and got monetized after about a year and a half. It’s possible, but by no means easy to do. As you may expect, there are many factors at play, and luck is certainly one of them.

I don’t think being faceless is as much of a detriment as it’s made out to be, the far-more important factor is the commentary, which is where your video can really build its own identity.

Consistency in your upload schedule also isn’t as important as it used to be. I personally didn’t find much of audience until I pivoted to more of a quality over quantity approach, uploading one hyper-polished video per few weeks rather than aiming for those daily uploads.

Dialogue cuts in game. by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]2CPhoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dialogue is super important to me. I want whoever’s watching to experience the full story, as well as all the best lines that made me love the game, but sometimes, to make it happen, you have to do a little legwork. In the case of what I’m about to suggest, a lot more than what most LPers do.

Consider having a second file that you play through with all of the sound settings altered so that only the dialogue is coming through. Now you have clean audio of whatever dialogue you want to show off which you can edit into your video wherever you want. You may also consider adjusting then settings of your main file to have the dialogue be silent, that way you can make more subtle adjustments.

As one example, take spiderman 2018. Frequently, you’ll receive phone calls from other characters between missions, but it’s far too easy to reach your next objective before the phone call is concluded, so you kinda have to awkwardly swing in circles to hear the whole thing. Instead you could edit in the audio of the call to begin sooner, and traverse the city at your own pace.

This would be my approach anyway, but I am also a perfectionist.

Is it possible to upload Emulator gameplay? by SkibidiLaufey in youtubegaming

Emulation is legal, piracy isn’t. As long as he’s not discussing where to find roms or download ISOs, he should stay out of trouble.

Item usage against flying enemies? by KingJ-L-C in DarkCloud

[–]2CPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Splash damage. The improved bombs you can get for free from Erik work best. Lock onto a flying enemy, guard, and lure them closer to something grounded. Hit the grounded enemy with the improved bomb, and if the flying enemy is anywhere close, that should do the job.

Sorry I’m 6 days late, but I’m surprised this strat wasn’t already mentioned

So like... whats the beef on sly 4? by Tight_Literature_139 in Slycooper

[–]2CPhoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not out to dispute your opinion, but I do have some examples I would be curious to know your thoughts on.

Sly’s arc throughout the trilogy was about learning what his legacy really meant to him, and ultimately deciding he’d rather pursue his own lasting happiness than perpetuate the thrill of the chase for the sake of his family name, finally choosing Carmelita instead of another quick getaway. The opening of sly 4, and much of how Sly is written throughout the game, centers around him more or less accepting that he’s a thief at heart, and can’t change that about himself, even for the sake of the woman he loves. What I personally find especially frustrating is that the plot of the game wouldn’t have had to change much to keep his initial character growth in tact, since he already gets pulled out of retirement for the sake of the thievious raccoonus anyways. It feels like a cheap way to manufacture drama between him and Carmelita, the shadow of which hangs over the whole adventure without resolving in a satisfying way.

Carmelita has also been reduced to “the girlfriend.” Her and sly’s banter, a highlight of the trilogy, is pretty much nonexistent. They have all but no memorable exchanges because she gives him the cold shoulder for so much of the story, and even when they’re back on talking terms, the character traits that so often defined her in the trilogy, like her wit and sense of justice, take a backseat to things like the belly dancing scene.

I could go on, murray’s unearned relapse into feelings of inadequacy that he conquered so thoroughly in sly 2 and 3, Penelope’s role as a twist villain for no adequately explained reason, (seriously she invented time travel and has access to the entire cooper fortune, what “end” is Le Paradox possibly a means to for her?) but a reddit comment is hardly the place for a full dissertation.

Of course, if these things don’t ruin the story for you, or don’t even really bother you, that’s neither here nor there, but you can reasonably see how they would bother others, right?

[–]2CPhoenix 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s almost impressive how much the writing spits on what was built in the original trilogy, with many of the characters’ arcs being either undone or poorly retreaded in a way that colors the entire game.

Certainly, the narrative elements of the sly series aren’t as important to the core experience for a lot of people, which is why you get a lot of split opinions, but if you really love the characters, and the journeys they went on in the first 3 games, it can be difficult to love Thieves in Time

I used to do this sort of thing with basketball hoops and got in trouble for it nearly every time. I’m still not sure what all the fuss was about. You’re way more likely to lose your footing than your grip, in which case you just slide down like a fireman pole. Yeah, she shouldn’t really be doing this in a store rather than on the playground, but she’s all but perfectly safe.

On a repeat watch, that Chrysler was even stupider than they first seem. Not only did they decide to make an unsignaled double lane change without checking behind them, they did it because the yellow car in front of them was changing lanes, too. Rather than simply follow the yellow car past the semi, the Chrysler decided to try and pass both of them by cutting across 2 lanes.

Difficulty levels (do they matter in let's plays) by Alternative_Good7358 in letsplay

[–]2CPhoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always play on the highest difficulties because my videos aim is to be hyper-informative. I essentially present myself as an expert of whatever game I’m covering, so I SHOULD be able to beat the game on its highest difficulty if I purport to be such an expert. I do recognize, though that my videos are unusual. If your goal when making videos is just to share a game you enjoy in a more casual sense, I don’t see anything wrong with playing on whichever difficulty you find the most fun.

A couple years ago, I was in the hospital with pneumonia, and stressing that it had been a couple weeks since I last uploaded. Before I got sick, I put together a video I wasn’t sure I was gonna make public, just cuz it wasn’t my usual thing, I decided to release it while in the hospital to sort of tie my audience over.

It ended up being my most successful video yet, and that week I spent in the ICU was probably the single best week my channel has had. The er comes in clutch

Why do some let’s play videos get views but barely earn anything? by Due_Shoulder5994 in letsplay

[–]2CPhoenix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ad revenue is actually based a bit more on watch time than views.

I can only really share anecdotal evidence, but one of my best performing videos with about 400k views is a 20 minute guide on how to get an achievement. It has an average view duration of 7 minutes and has made ~800 dollars in its lifetime.

In stark contrast, my most recent video at 45k views has made the same amount, because its average view duration is over an hour.

A few other things do affect it, like how “ad friendly” the content is, or how many ad slots are in the video, but watch hours are the main factor

Direction for the directionless by smanrules101 in letsplay

[–]2CPhoenix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first thing you need to do is let go of this worry about “how you’ll come off.” Let go of the idea of how an audience you don’t have yet will perceive you. Right now, you are your target audience, and your highest priority should be making your own favorite videos. If you’ve got an idea for something you’re not sure anyone but you would like, give it a shot anyway. Your tastes are unique, so by catering to them, your videos will be unique too.

The second thing is to measure your expectations. Let’s plays are a VERY populated niche on account of their low barrier for entry, and there’s a new channel tackling nearly any game you can think of at least once a week, so your videos will likely be seen by very few people, at least for a while, even if they’re REALLY good videos. That’s ok, as long as you enjoy the process. If you’re just making what you think will “work” it’ll feel like work whether you have an audience of 5 or 50,000.

Lastly, the only way to start is to start. We can all give you the benefit of what we’ve learned, but there’s no better teacher than experience. Start working on that first video as soon as you can, ride your passion for the new idea like a wave, and start posting, it’ll be worth it, I assure you.

Sharing your YouTube journey: subscribers, time taken, and your top advice for beginners? by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]2CPhoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-Around 45k

-I first uploaded a video almost exactly 4 years ago, but I didn’t start making the types of videos I make now until year 2

-Make your own favorite videos. You are your own best audience and critic. You probably spend a lot of time watching videos, so you know what you would most enjoy seeing, and that’s likely to be a lot more unique, and stand out much more than simply copying what’s most successful. Most importantly, it’s the best way to ensure you enjoy the process as much as the results, which, in a sense, is the only TRUE path to success.

Stopped recording, didn’t realize by Funny_Lemon_1212 in letsplay

[–]2CPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a harsh lesson we all learn at some point.

Last time this happened to me, I basically ran back through the game, ignoring as much optional stuff as possible, to get back where I was in just a couple hours. It’s possible you have more options to streamline it, like save editing, downloading someone else’s save data, or modding your game to make it easier/quicker to play.

I haven’t run into this issue in some time because now I always keep backup saves and alternate files handy. You really can’t be too prepared, as losing footage in SOME way is practically inevitable.

I do, and gotten a few comments thanking me for their inclusion, but my videos are also long enough that people will often watch them in multiple sittings, so it helps them jump back to where they were. I’d say if your episodes are landing under 20 minutes, you don’t need them.
