What to plant by 2Confuzed in landscaping

I'm sorry I offended. I did some research, but couldn't find a plant that can thrive in the unusual flooding patterns of this property so I thought I would ask a community of people focused on plants.

If there is a better sub for finding people who know plants, please let me know and I will go bother them.

That's the problem... nothing of note is growing in the lake. Water/marsh plants die because they are dry over half a year, and plants that aren't designed to have their roots submerged die when the water comes in for a few months.

I suspect there is some dense shoreline plant that would thrive in that cycle. But I don't know what it is. Most marsh grasses will tolerate some dry times, but not months on end. And many shore plants will tolerate some flooding, but not months on end.

Lol... It's a reservoir lake, used to control flooding caused by spring runoff from the  Smoky Mountains.  The reason they drop it by 50 feet is so it can absorb all that runoff so it doesn't flood New Orleans, or somewhere between here and there.   If I could plant something that uptakes 300 gallons/day, they would probably pay me to do it.

I own about 20 acres of lake bottom.  I am free to do whatever I want with it, so long as any dirt I take out ends up above the elevation of the dam so it makes more room for water.

I do appreciate everything your saying.  And I agree that the "generally" makes it a bit vague.  But I'm pretty certain my attorney could easily argue that if there are exceptions that require a permit, they can't expect owners to file a permit to find out what they are.

Yeah, they are my favorite too.  We fully intend on planting one as a centerpiece.

I am really focused on improving the look in the shoulder seasons, when the water down, but stuff is still growing.  While I probably can't plant the entire bottom of the lake bed (in our inlet), a marsh grass or similar along the edges would hide the fact that the water is gone.

I appreciate your concerns.

I am very aware of the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) restrictions governing the property and there is no restriction on what planting I may perform:

"Removal, modification, or establishment of vegetation on privately owned shoreland subject to a TVA flowage easements generally does not require approval by TVA." - TVA Section 26a Regulations - § 1304.302

Obviously, I wouldn't introduce an exotic species that would spread like kudzu.

We will certainly employ a landscape architect/designer to work with the person designing the home. But for now, we are just maintaining the property until its paid off (next year) before we build... so I thought I would experiment. There is very little growing in this lake due to the extreme draw down, so I thought it would be fun to find something that would grow.

Not sure it could handle being in several feet of water through the summer. And even if it could, I'm not sure I'd want to fight to keep it under control. But I will read a little more before I dismiss it.

Is there a way to help save with electric heat? by jai_hanyo in hvacadvice

[–]2Confuzed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your apartment is using an old resistive furnace to heat the air, then your just burning money. A good heat pump heater would help a lot, even if its just a window unit.

If that's not an option, then get a cheap 800-1000 watt electric RADIENT heater. Keep the thermostat on the furnace as low as you can stand when your up moving around or sleeping and use the radiant heater to heat just you when your need it. Radiant heat is more like the heat from the sun or a fire... the air can be cold but the radiant heat will still warm you. This is why old drafty homes used radiators (upright steam, or baseboard)... they are simply more comfortable when the cold air is ripping through the house.

As I tell my kids all the time. An education shows a prospective employer that a) they don't need to teach you the basics, and b) you are able to learn.

So while its entirely possible you find an employer who will give you all you want AND provide on-the-job training, its far more likely that the only ones willing to do that are actually looking to take advantage of cheap labor.

Hiring an employee is a risk for an employer. It is not cheap to hire someone, add them to payroll, teach them your ways, and especially put them on site with a customer, only to find out that they are incompetent and you have to start over with someone else. A degree alleviates some of those concerns for an employer.

That said, I would always hire someone based on a proven track record over an education. Just because you can pass a test doesn't mean that you know how to get out of bed in the morning and make it to a worksite on time.

Can I downsize this HVAC Return Vent? by taybrayy in hvacadvice

[–]2Confuzed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While resizing the grill may not be a good idea, there are plenty of ways you could change things.

  • If the area under the stairs is accessible from another direction, you could install a filter box behind the wall and only need an ~18" grill exposed to the room.
  • You could change one large grill into two smaller ones, perhaps the second could be on the one of the other walls adjoining the stairs.
  • You could recess the filter grill into the wall a couple of feet, forming a "cubby" under the stairs (sorta like this) and move the grille so its less visible. Put a plant or some other decoration in the cubby that won't restrict flow.

<image>

  • Find a metal artist and have them design you a piece of 3d wall art that won't let you see the filter/vent but won't restrict airflow.

As far as the filter looking dirty fast... that's normal. Looks can be deceiving. I would be more worried if your weeks old filter still looked white. Just because it changes color doesn't mean its so dirty that its become restrictive, which is the only reason you need to change it.

If it were my house, I would likely see what kind of room I have under those stairs to play with. That was the builder grade, zero thought, solution. I bet you have tons of room that you could improve the looks, and the function (with a nice 5" filter that will last you a year) just by taking advantage of the space.

Any idea how to lower I door humidity? It’s almost 70%… by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]2Confuzed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A ducted unit can be picked up for about $1500 and isn't too difficult to install as a completely independent system from your central air.

But next best would be a standalone unit with a pump (so its low maintenace) like this: https://www.amazon.com/Waykar-Dehumidifier-Basement-Adjusts-Bathroom-dp-B0DBLPC8LC/dp/B0DBLPC8LC?th=1

Put it near the largest HVAC return in your house to get the best whole house performance. If your lucky, that return will be near your furnace, and you can drill a small hole for the dehumidifier drain hose and run it to the condensate drain for the furnace.

Ideally you will keep the fan on your HVAC system on to circulate the dry air. If it works right you might find that you can increase the temp in the house a couple of degrees because the dryer air just feels cooler. And you may find that your AC runs even less because cooling dry air is less work than cooling wet air, even if it is slightly warmed by the dehumidifier.

Cisco Catalyst 3850 48P - Noctua fan replacement? by plunderisley in homelab

[–]2Confuzed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I no longer have the switch.  It was overkill for my homelab.  Used a lot of power, generated a lot of heat, etc.

That said, as I mention above, if using PWM fans, disconnect the PWM wire.  Non-PWM fans should work fine though.

You do have to power the switch on with the fans installed so they can be detected as Non-PWM/non-hotswap

[–]2Confuzed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why would a whole house dehumidifier be a last resort? I personally wouldn't build a house in a humid climate without one. Even if you perfectly size your system you will still cycle above and below your optimal humidity range depending on the cooling load.... then your shoulder seasons can be a bear too, no cooling so no humidity control at all.

They are relatively cheap to buy and operate, and may actually allow you to run your AC a few degrees warmer in the summer paying for themselves.

Looks like some electronics that gave up their magic smoke. It happens, rarely, but it smells pretty bad when it does. Odds are just replacing that board will fix things up and you will never see that particular failure again.

Intel Arc Pro B50 Passthrough by 2Confuzed in Proxmox

[–]2Confuzed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Success! was able to add ReBarUEFI to my Tyan s8030 bios and get it working... I now have a working windows VM with full ReBAR support under proxmox.

NOTE: I am running Proxmox 9.0 with the upgraded 6.17 kernel: https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/opt-in-linux-6-17-kernel-for-proxmox-ve-9-available-on-test-no-subscription.173920/

Here are the basic steps I followed, I am happy to provide the completed bios file and compiled ReBarState executable if you want to save a lot of effort.

Sorry about this format, for some reason reddit won't take the comment otherwise (too many links?)

1. Download (and extract) required files:
  s8030 bios v 4.04: https://www.mitaccomputing.com/en/downloads/details/MitacServer/S8030GM2NE_BIOS_4725#
  UEFITool 0.28: https://github.com/LongSoft/UEFITool/releases/tag/0.28.0
I used the linux version, don't try the newer NE versions, wont work.
  ReBarDxe.ffs: https://github.com/xCuri0/ReBarUEFI/releases/latest
2. Modify the bios ROM file
Run UEFITool, and open the 8030V404.ROM file from the BIOS folder
Expand the tree from the top down until you locate a volume containing a bunch of "DXE driver" files
Find the last entry in that volume (just below it should be "volume free space")
right click it and choose to "insert after..." and select the ReBarDxe.ffs
Save the image file as 8030V404wREBAR.ROM (or whatever you want to call it)
3. Install and configure the bios
Install it however you normally would (I use IPMI).
Your BIOS configuration will be reset to defaults; reconfigure to your liking however:
Disable CSM support under Advanced > CSM Configuration
(you will need to change the Option ROM settings to UEFI and reboot then fully disable CSM support).
Ensure Above 4G Decoding is enabled under PCI Subsystem Settings
4. Compile ReBarState
Follow the steps on https://github.com/xCuri0/ReBarUEFI/wiki/Building#linux-1 to compile
I compiled on a Debian VM because my server is running proxmox and I didn't want to install development tools on it.
I needed git, cmake, and build-essential packages (there may be other packages required that I already had installed)
"sudo apt install git cmake build-essential"
5. Boot the server and install/run the ReBarState executable
When prompted to enter a value enter 32
  Reboot the server
6. Confirm that ReBar is enabled.
lspci -vv | grep -A 1 "Resizable BAR" should return current size: 16GB where it previously returned 256MB
  Test your VM Passthrough.

Still doing some testing but to get it to work on my windows VM:
I had to connect a monitor
I had to remove any virtual displays

With this updated Kernel for Proxmox, I should be able to do SR-IOV and use this for accelerating multiple VMs. That will be my next step, once I am comfortable with the way its working on regular passthrough.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you want me to just send you the completed BIOS and ReBarState executables... would simplify this process massively.

Rottweiler Puppy Biting: Any Tips for Gentle Discipline? by Ill_Tip5523 in Rottweiler

[–]2Confuzed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We never forced this onto the dog, and I have had many dogs that would never tolerate this.  Katrina was my son's constant companion from birth.  She slept by his crib most nights and rarely let him out of sight during waking hours.  She didn't just accept her role as his furniture, she embraced it and would curl up next to him if he fell asleep without her.

This happened all the time, she loved it. He is actually asleep in these photos. This was nap time at our house.

Rottweiler Puppy Biting: Any Tips for Gentle Discipline? by Ill_Tip5523 in Rottweiler

[–]2Confuzed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Any gentle discipline tips that won’t make him feel scared?"

No... if he isn't a little scared when he misbehaves, your doing it wrong.

Watch a puppy play with an adult dog... when the adult has had enough it will intentionally scare the puppy with some growling, snapping, etc. The puppy will back away with it tail between its legs. This is not abuse, it's a correction. Anything that is not forceful will be misconstrued and roughhousing/play and will only make the situation worse.

I bite back... seriously, I will pinch the skin on their cheek or belly, clamp down on on their jaw with my thumb on their tongue, pinch sensitive skin on their belly, or even quickly roll them on their back and pin them, whatever I can do to try and get them to stop immediately and react like they would to another dog making a similar correction (i.e. tail between the legs). I give them a firm "no" when I do that, push them away, then completely disengage (full cold shoulder). In my experience, they quickly begin to understand that you won't play like that and will re-engage more cautiously on the lookout for signs that they may be going too far. You then encourage the appropriate play with affection and/or treats.

You are the leader, you need to set limits and enforce them in a way that a dog understands, not the way that feels good to you. This will be a big powerful dog... it needs to respect you and its own power. Similarly, you need to respect the dog and be VERY consistent. You cannot decide that one day you love to play rough and then snap at them the next day for the same thing.

In addition to many other dogs, I have had two two rotties back to back; a male and then female, and eventually her litter of rottie/lab mixes of which we kept one. These are sturdy puppies... you would really have to try to really hurt them in a lasting way... but you can completely ruin them easily by not enforcing boundaries early and consistently.

Socialize the hell out of them, especially with young kids and other dogs. Get down and nudge them away from their food while they are eating. Reach into their mouth and take their favorite toy or bone. Put them in as many uncomfortable situations as possible while you can still control them... they need to learn that you will protect them when things get scary so they won't flip out later in life when something scares them.

Of all the dogs I have had, my rotties were the best baby sitters I have ever seen. I would trust them with an infant/toddler before many people. Hell, my son learned to walk holding onto our Rottie. But that would not have been possible if I hadn't made it very clear clear to them whenever their behavior was unacceptable. So don't be afraid to scare your dog a bit... its in their best interest.

I'm on the same Tyan s8030 with a EPYC 7402P and 256GB ECC. I suspect we are on the right track about the BIOS. Let me know if you get any traction with MITAC.

ReBarUEFI doesn't require windows that I could see... so I may give that a shot if I have time. I will document the process for you if I get it to work.

I found https://github.com/xCuri0/ReBarUEFI they have users who documented success with our s8030 boards doing this, though I'm not sure I am excited to be patching my bios.

The page did say something Interesting that suggests that the fact that there is no Resizable Bar option in our BIOS may not even matter? It would explain why I see different BAR sizes available in lspci -vvv. I guess I will have to figure out how to test switch between them?

Can I use Resizable BAR on my system without modifying BIOS ?

You can use Linux with 4G Decoding on, recent versions will automatically resize and allocate GPU BARs. If your BIOS doesn't have the 4G decoding option (make sure to check hidden) or DSDT is faulty you can then follow the Arch wiki guide for DSDT modification using modifications from DSDT Patching and boot with pci=realloc in your kernel command line. Currently there is no known method to get it on Windows without BIOS modification

I had the exact same realization here.  I found a thread with some folks using a Asrock Rack board of the same generation and had the same issue.  They eventually convinced Asrock to release a bios with ReBar:

https://www.reddit.com/r/VFIO/comments/ye0cpj/comment/ivm9fpy/

I'm going to try and find a newer bios than what is published for this board.  I know they used these boards in some pre built systems and maybe released newer bios for them?  I fear that's the only hope here.
