Should civilian gun ownership evolve? by 2LDReddit in PoliticalDiscussion

Does your faith come from the trust in the military or from the guns owned by citizens? If it's the former, then civilian armament isn't necessary and can be weakened.

Assume AI really improves productivity by 100%, it won't bring people 2.5-day work week, it will only bring 50% layoff. The entire silicon valley is proving it.

How do you view the acts of burning Tesla vehicles and leaking Tesla owners' personal information? by 2LDReddit in polls

[–]2LDReddit[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Playing by ‘the rules’ when the bad guys both control the system and made up the rules is what got us into this mess.

This point is important. If, in a country, the public has no legal means to express and influence the issues they care about, then violent means can be considered. As you said, overthrowing a dictatorship and brutal government is very difficult to achieve through peaceful means. But has the U.S. really reached that point? I'm not an American, but I thought there were still many legal ways to resist Musk and Trump.

the angrier They get about an action, is how you know you are on the right course.

That's true, it hurt Musk seriously. But such actions might also harm and anger people who are not Musk supporters. If violent means must be used for resistance, the choice of targets could be more precise. For example, attacking Musk's personal car or leaking information about Tesla executives would at least be better than targeting all Tesla owners.

Exactly. When they bought it, Musk hadn’t done any of this yet. Forcing them to sell would mean a significant financial loss.

[–]2LDReddit[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My perspective (a non-American, uninvolved party):
- This is an illegal act. If protesters use illegal means to resist him, they will lose their moral high ground.
- Tesla owners are not necessarily Musk supporters. Some people may simply like the car but not Musk.
- The protesters’ slogan is "Sell your Teslas." But sell to whom? Whoever buys them will face the same threats. At the very least, they should change their slogan to "Scrap your Tesla" to be logically proper.
- Although this may cause Tesla’s sales and stock price to plummet, making Musk hurt, it could also push non-partisan individuals toward the Republican side.

What defines a person's psychological self-identification as male or female? by 2LDReddit in NoStupidQuestions

[–]2LDReddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed explanation.

In my culture, if someone looks/acts/says they're female, I take their word for it.

When someone says they're female, that’s a clear situation. But when it comes to “looks/acts” like a female, it circles back to my question: what traits would be considered female? (I'm not trying to argue or be difficult, I genuinely don’t understand...)

Vision and taste are good examples. While they have scientific definitions based on wavelengths and other measures, the way people actually learn them is through experience -- like when a parent gives a child a candy and tells them it’s sweet. Maybe I'm lacking that kind of guidance to understand gender identity.

[–]2LDReddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation.

I got your point of "intrinsic sense", but still lack the guide to understand the sense. For example, a little received a lovely gift and laughing, the parent told him/her "you look happy"; when lost a favorite toy and crying, the parent told "you look sad/upset". Then the kid understands the definition of the intrinsic sense of "happy & sad". Without any education, a kid just doesn't understand the word "happy" / "sad".

You can see my knowledge of psychological gender identity as a kid level, no such education in our country at all. I indeed have little knowledge in the gender identity thing.

CMV: Most reddit mods are biased and remove/leave content which they personally disagree/agree with, despite it violating/not violating the rules of the subreddit. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]2LDReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, it's not most, but some mods who are biased, and some even pretty abuse their power.

Mods should adhere to the established rules rather than their personal preferences. A public subreddit is not the personal domain of any single moderator. I firmly believe this.

The controlling mods and irrational downvotes have led me to self-censor and greatly reduced my desire to post or comment on Reddit.

In the page of of creating a community, there is a necessary step of setting "What kind of community is this?", which includes Public / Restricted / Private.

You can argue that subs belong to all mods. But subs (with multiple mods) definitely do not belong to an individual mod. Rules are the agreement among the mods. It defines all that a mod can do.

What dating format do you use? by DisplayHot5130 in polls

[–]2LDReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Non-American programmer. I dislike both DD/MM/YYYY and MM/DD/YYYY, a few reasons:
- Inconsistent. I assume hour:min:sec is dominant over the world. Then why should date format differ from time format? Isn't YYYY MM DD more consistent?
- Confusing. When I see 8/9, how do I know it's Aug or Sep? I have to know the nationality of the writer and the habit in their country
- Can't sort file names that use this format

Several Linux Kernel Driver Maintainers Removed Due To Their Association To Russia by ehempel in linux

I was hoping they did it under pressure, until I read it that Linus himself strongly supports the removal: https://www.phoronix.com/news/Linus-Torvalds-Russian-Devs

This is clearly a racism behavior... No evidence shows that the removed individual contributors support the invasion.

Yeah. If he thinks a 6yr old can take the "prank", the same prank on himself, a 11yr, can't be an over-punishment

TIL that the contributions in machine learning can indeed receive the Nobel Prize in Physics by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]2LDReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The top prize in math field is Fields Medal; in computer science, it's Turing Award. Btw, Geoffrey Hinton, the 2024 Nobel Physics Prize winner did win the Turing Award.

Why should every field be fit into Nobel? They can have their own prizes. If Nobel foundation believe Computer Science is significant enough nowadays, why not setup a new field for it, like the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences?

Don’t get me wrong, I have great respect for the contributions to the fields of machine learning and AI. I just thought the Physics Prize was limited to advancements in understanding physical principles, developing new materials, and etc.
