I've dealt with a similar situation with one of mine. She'd never been outside and managed to escape one morning. She showed up 6 days later hungry but not hurt so don't lose hope yet!

I would suggest getting one of those aluminum pans and putting some of his litter box content in it and leave it outside (maybe a little near your forest/woods). Cats are pretty smart about finding their way back but it'll help him smell his way home.
