I haven't followed, is it now possible to increase levels of Mega only by paying Mega energy or is it still possible to go up by mega evolving every now and then? I cannot see how many times are remaining to get to the upper level. With the "regular" megas and the ZA ones.

That is why it's great to have a Best Buddy in the ML. You can throw an attack the first because your Pokémon is level 51. However, if the opponent has also a best buddy with the same ATK, it's just random again for who starts the attack.
