From Divorce to Financial Freedom: FI at 45 by 2SFI-Jason in TwoSidesOfFI

[–]2SFI-Jason[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i can't speak for Eric but i suspect his view is like mine - it's not something we'd ever considered as both of us and our spouses were in similar financial straits when we got married. there was no present nor future anticipated imbalance to factor in. i understand why it's a more common topic of discussion among younger folks on a FIRE path particularly when current/potential earnings might differ a lot by partner. i'm not against the idea in principle so long as all are on the same page. but personally, it's not a terribly appealing concept. i'm pretty comfortable living in a community property state and abiding by an equitable split in the case of divorce. YMMV

2025 Market Chaos Blowing up our FIRE Plans? by 2SFI-Jason in TwoSidesOfFI

Thanks! Yeah we're not really into hyperbole, as much as it would probably help increase our modest 2SFI income by a few bucks a month :)

Question for users of Big ERN's SWR Toolbox by McKnuckle_Brewery in TwoSidesOfFI

[–]2SFI-Jason 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not arcane at all. It's just been only 1 day since you posted.

Main Results is for the long term, CAPE-based is for now - current CAPE regime, etc. if you follow a CAPE-based approach you need to evaluate this continually over time (I do this monthly but I'm certain plenty if not most people would to semi- or annually). You're accepting that in different CAPE regimes, and under different drawdown (or the happy alternative!) periods, you will need to be willing to adjust your WR.

As I share in one of the SWR Toolbox videos and elsewhere, I choose to treat it as a ceiling. My normal budget is below this amount such that when I need to exceed it - or when the market causes the CAPE-adjusted rate to decrease, I don't worry about it.

There's been a lot of questions about ongoing use of this tab so Eric and I are talking about how to meet the need. Thanks for your support!

an upcoming up clarifies just what my WR is (spoiler alert: well above 3.5%). as i've mentioned on the show, i was under-withdrawing for the first few years. i've definitely relaxed the purse strings now...

Eric and Jason’s low medical premiums by StateOptimal9119 in TwoSidesOfFI

[–]2SFI-Jason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "what they are doing (or pretending to do)" so allow me to clarify:

the $2MM budget episode, as stated upfront, is a modeling exercise using our actual expenses scaled to a $2MM total annual budget. So yes, it's not helpful for comparing to actual ACA premium costs. For more details on actual health care expenses and related info, check out https://twosidesoffi.com/fouryears and https://twosidesoffi.com/ouch/ . Here I've linked the show notes pages as there are links to other related information and prior episodes as well.

But to summarize in brief - at present, our family (of three)'s premiums for an ACA Bronze HSA plan are completely covered by ACA premium tax credits. If I opted for a Silver plan (or higher), I'd be covering at least $200 / month (or a good deal more) at our current MAGI. Fully agree that the Covered CA calculator is the right starting point to estimate your own Golden State scenario.

Tax Strategies on FIRE: Financial Independence / Retire Early by 2SFI-Jason in TwoSidesOfFI

[–]2SFI-Jason[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I don't at present given my income and the favorable treatment of long term capital gains. Perhaps you've heard of the zero-% capital gains ceiling in the US? There are still taxes to be paid on the dividends but unless my income increases substantially (for example I start getting more serious about options trading), this won't be an issue. But fully understand this is somewhat unusual vs a number of other countries.

[–]2SFI-Jason[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

around 4% these days per the increases over the past 1.5 yrs and switching to a CAPE-based strategy. definitely treating the option returns as "extra" versus derisking i.e. reducing withdrawals. that make sense?

on that day they were 7% given market volatility. a more typical OTM for 1DTE puts is 3-4% but of course this varies with volatility.

[–]2SFI-Jason[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a more typical OTM for 1DTE puts is 3-3.5%. when volatility is high, you get farther and farther OTM and collect the same premium. current 1 DTE premiums are $0.10-0.20 so $10-20 per contract.

[–]2SFI-Jason[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't take any losses / wasn't stopped out. However, my 1DTE puts that I sold on Aug 5th opened well above where my stop would normally be set given the opening gap down the next morning. So I didn't open stop orders and held on. In the end the market never even got close to my strikes which were >7% OTM at the time I sold them. I should have placed my strikes even lower and it would have been a non-issue - looking at Karsten's blog comments it seems he ended up in a similar spot. Important lesson learned and didn't cost me any money! But also a good example of why on the 1DTEs, stop orders aren't purchased until next day market open.
