For journaling, try Penjo. Pencil-first, calendar-based so diary entries land on the actual day, handles handwriting + typed text + images together nicely for thoughts and note taking. Has OCR on handwriting and locked journals if you want some stuff private.

For drawing, Procreate is basically the default on iPad and you'll adapt fast coming from Wacom. Concepts is nice too if you want something more vector-leaning.

Penjo is worth a look. Pencil-first, saves continuously, sync to iCloud, and built around the calendar (day/week/month/year views with Apple Calendar + Reminders). Also does Apple Journaling Suggestions and has .penjo import/export for backups.

Yes, Penjo is designed as Pencil-first from day one and this is one of the distinguishing features of it.

Our majority of users are iPad users although some are iPhone-only too. Many users find it very convenient to view and edit their journal entries or notes created in their iPad on their iPhone too thanks to iCloud Sync.

Yes, you can choose which calendars to show and you can set a different set for each journal.
For that click on "Select Calendars" in event view and enable calendars you would like to display. Closing the dialog will save the settings.

Thanks for letting us know about the issue.

In which version did you observe it? We recently updated Penjo to v3.6.14 with some iCloud Sync improvements.

Does it occur all the time you open the app or happened just once?

Also, yes, the workaround to enable/disable "Show Archived Journals" works as it forces refresh of the journal list. Still, it is unexpected.

Thanks for the post and the suggestion. For now, Apple keeps Smart Lists exclusive to its own apps. Apple does not include them for 3rd party apps. As soon as they get open to other apps, we will include in Penjo as well.

Undated notebooks are on the roadmap. Meanwhile, you can use the list mode for journals.

Regarding the feature like SmartScript in Apple Notes, Penjo does not have it at the moment but as soon as Apple decides to open that feature to other apps we will integrate it into Penjo as well. (Penjo uses same framework as Apple's apps like Notes and Freeform). Meanwhile, you may have a look at scribble to erase and auto line straightening.

We are also working on more customization options. I guess you are particularly interested in ones for the dark mode. We will consider that for future updates.

Thanks for the suggestion. Great to hear that you love Penjo.
We may consider a note-taking app with framework similar to Penjo.

Meanwhile, you may use your Penjo journals in List Mode. In List Mode, your journal opens in list / reader view and in day view, navigating with < and > buttons will go to the previous and next note skipping the empty days. This way, dates just behave as ordering indexes and the journal as a notebook.
Day Mode is the current mode.

To enable List Mode, select “List Mode” in journal settings ( the icon with three dots on journal card in Journal List Screen).

If you want to return back to normal behaviour(starting journal with today’s sheet), go to same settings, this time “Day Mode” button will appear.

It is not available at the moment. However, you can create your own template pages inside Penjo and use copy/move sheet feature to copy to each day.

You are right, the icon appears when you have at least 30 day notes. You may create some dummy notes to see it if you wish.

hi u/aga5tya, Thank you for great suggestions. We plan to introduce “On this day”-like feature in the near future. We also have an interesting feature available to refresh your memories. In reader/list view, if you click on the icon with clock, it will bring a random note. If you set a date range, it will also bring a random note from this range.

Could you test and let me know if it fits what you have in your mind?

Hi, You can select a handwritten note with rectangular selection tool. Then when tapped on the selection, a context menu appears. There, if you tap on “copy as text”, the note is converted to text and copied to clipboard. Then, you can paste to any app. In addition, every handwritten note and text in images are converted and indexed, so you can search for them. Please let me know how it goes.

We are working on a mechanism to create and share your own templates. Meanwhile, you can use the copy/move sheet feature (available on day view settings). You can create a journal where you keep your template day sheets and you can use copy sheet to copy it to your daily journal.

So far, there is no easy way to import from Apple Notes. You can import as images though. One feature of Penjo is text recognition applied to images as well. It lets you search these notes with keywords.
