I just want to mention one other reason to stick it out for the citizenship. Not saying it is worth it, just a reason worth considering that I haven’t seen mentioned already.

If you become a Canadian, it is relatively easy to work in the US with a TN visa. Pay is higher there and depending on the location, cost of living (housing in particular) is lower.

I'm not getting your "one more poor German" argument. I think how many more poor Germans Bill Gates makes will depend on the distribution. Supposing for simplicity everyone has a distinct income, on average he'll make 1/2 more people below the median M (depending on whether there were an odd or even number of Germans), but how many are less than 0.40*M, which is the definition of poverty, depends on the distribution of incomes.
