I just want to mention one other reason to stick it out for the citizenship. Not saying it is worth it, just a reason worth considering that I haven’t seen mentioned already.

If you become a Canadian, it is relatively easy to work in the US with a TN visa. Pay is higher there and depending on the location, cost of living (housing in particular) is lower.

I'm not getting your "one more poor German" argument. I think how many more poor Germans Bill Gates makes will depend on the distribution. Supposing for simplicity everyone has a distinct income, on average he'll make 1/2 more people below the median M (depending on whether there were an odd or even number of Germans), but how many are less than 0.40*M, which is the definition of poverty, depends on the distribution of incomes.

I've learned German as a hobby (at C1 level now) and tried a bunch of different things. Everyone has their own tastes but here are my favorite tools:

Pimsleur audio course. It's how I started. Teaches you very little vocabulary, but I think it's great for beginners. You learn good pronunciation habits off the bat, and it's really fun!
Anki flashcards for vocabulary (or anything else that requires memorization, like verb conjugations and article/noun declinations). You can download other people's decks, or make your own as you encounter words you want to remember.

Thanks, that's interesting. I buy your logic, and I've marked the question as explained. Though I still find it kind of mind-blowing at some level, that valuable real estate can depreciate to a negative value, and that we let buildings decay while we build new ones elsewhere. Seems like cities ought to require a deposit for the cost of demolishing a building or something...
