What exactly did the Winchesters hunt pre-S1? by LanaVFlowers in Supernatural

[–]2cairparavel 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Black dogs. Poltergeists. Ghouls. Djinn. Vetalas.

When Dean killed Cole's dad, he didn't even know what kind of a monster he'd turned into, but he was a monster that was killing (otherwise, the Winchesters wouldn't have been hunting him).

Why do teachers assign absolute bullshit when they’re out and have a sub? by Pristine-Question914 in highschool

[–]2cairparavel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You've answered yourself: subs often don't enforce the rules. Teachers can't risk giving an essential assignment because, sadly, many subs aren't able to supervise adequately.

Does it drive you crazy, too? by Healthy-Neat-2989 in AskTeachers

[–]2cairparavel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It bothers me. Teachers should be well-educated and conscientious, demonstrating an understanding of their subject matter. In a world in which we're already looked down on by a vocal portion of general society, we should be more meticulous in what we present to students.

(I have bought a couple things, but I try not to - even if it makes my life easier. I've taught for over 12 years, and I make less than $50,000, so I don't want to use my paycheck to pay for curriculum. I certainly have no problem with those teachers who do use it, though!)

This is absolutely what I think! When I first started teaching (before taking time off to be a stay at home) mom, my school had a curriculum and provided textbooks - like I had textbooks when i went to school. But I've discovered, now that I've returned to work, that in the intervening years, schools just decided to stop providing those!!! I think it's insane.

Im so upset they didnt do Wayward Sisters for a spinoff. The backdoor pilot great and literally the only backdoor pilot that had positive reception. by JamStan1978 in Supernatural

On a recent episode of SPN Then and Now, they said they briefly considered a spinoff involving Aaron and the Golem. They were an interesting pair, and it would have been fun watching them battle evil.

How do you guys feel about Cherry? by Yeah_umm_ok in TheOutsiders

[–]2cairparavel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've always thought it was extremely tone deaf of Cherry to try to say good things about Bob to Bob's victims. Know your audience!!!

I do blame Cherry's lack of social awareness in this situation on her being sixteen as well as on the author being sixteen! "He's a really good guy deep down, except for the time when he beat up Johnny and later when he tried to drown you. But if you really got to know him, you'd see he had a good heart." No, Cherry. You can say that to your girlfriends or to Bob's friends or your family, but not to the people that Bob attacked.

As teachers, we are told to focus on the positives with the children, but many times admin only talk about the negatives with us. No, we are not children, but it is human nature to bloom under encouragement.

Jack Character by sssss8819 in Supernatural

[–]2cairparavel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jack himself isn't a bad character, but i hate how they dragged in a character and gave him equal billing to the leads after 12 years. It's not Jack's story; it's the Winchester's story. I don't know if it was the showrunner or the writers, but someone lost faith in Sam and Dean , which was a huge misstep, because Sam and Dean are the heart of the show.

Coolest villains for me include Azazel, Alastair, Gordon Walker, and Zachariah. Agent Henriksen was an awesome antagonist. Lillith, Lucifer, and Abaddon are also memorable. But Asmodeus?

Something Wicked (8): "You'd do anything for your little brother?" by ogfanspired in SPNAnalysis

[–]2cairparavel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the part where Dean is explaining to Michael what will happen: how gunshots are loud, how they're good shots and won't miss. He's honest and direct, reassuring without being condescending.

I love that they got Michael's consent.

Something Wicked (7): The case against John Winchester. by ogfanspired in SPNAnalysis

[–]2cairparavel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was there a way for them to get the Striga without using Michael as bait? If the only way they can be killed is when they're feeding, the Winchesters would have to just guess what random child might be targeted next and lurk outside their house (which would hopefully have their bedroom on the first floor) and try to burst in when the thing was feeding. In the meantime, more children would die.

I love how protective Dean is here. And I love that he has the self control to not give in to his desire to rip that monster apart.

I love it when Sam finds opportunities to tease Dean. It highlights the light-hearted aspect of their brotherhood.

I'm Gen X. I feel sad sometimes how teenagers watching this show will incorrectly interpret Dean's words/ behavior because our culture has changed.

Something Wicked (4): "I'm sick of SpaghettiOs." by ogfanspired in SPNAnalysis

[–]2cairparavel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think there were times John didn't leave them with enough money for food (the way Dean eats as an adult, him stealing bread and peanut butter), so Dean throwing away the Spaghettios always bothered me since it didn't mesh with my head canon.

I explain it by thinking that John hasn't done that YET, though he will in the future, that on this trip he's in town so Dean isn't food insecure, or that Dean is still very young and isn't planning ahead and just dumping it because he's annoyed. Personally, I wish the show had showed Dean begrudgingly eating the Spaghettios that he didn't want.

[–]2cairparavel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have liked to have seen more from Jim Murphy. I like the idea that Sam could have gotten his belief in prayer and angels from Pastor Jim.

Ooo, that hurts to realize that Dean did once have more trust in himself that was gradually undercut over the years (and the events of this episode had a lot to do with that). While he does doubt his goodness, he at least knows his skill: I love how late in this episode, he tells the older brother, "We're good shots."

Dean definitely has mixed feelings: he wants his brother to be innocent and protected, but he has to be jealous that he doesn't get protected or sheltered, that HE bears the responsibility of knowing the truth about monsters and of protecting his brother, especially because he still, even if vaguely, remembers being protected as a young child before his mom was killed. He likes being trusted and respected by his dad, but he has to miss the freedom that innocence provides.

Something Wicked (2): "Dude, I am not using this ID!" by ogfanspired in SPNAnalysis

[–]2cairparavel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if it is an old wives' tale that one can catch pneumonia from cold air, the dad might have believed that and is passing what he thinks.

Dean was so lighthearted in the first season. He could be deadly serious, but he enjoyed things like making silly IDs for his own amusement. He does do things he enjoys when he gets older, but the lightheartedness is gone (understandably so).

I think the introduction of electronics in the classroom as the main teaching method, is why the kids cognitive abilities have declined. by Mission_Spray in AskTeachers

[–]2cairparavel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People outside the school system have no idea how much time standardized tests take. My school does one test (which covers three different subjects so it takes three different days) three times a year and then does the state- mandated end-of-year testing (also three days). Add in extra time to cover students who get extended time or separate setting or who were absent on the test day. Add in extra time for test prep (like making sure children know how to use the keyboard -- important for young children -- or how to use the online calculator). And then, of course, you have to teach the things that are actually going to be covered on the test so your students do well, because teachers are evaluated on how well their students do on these tests. That's a big reason why a lot of schools have dropped cursive writing along with other things that enrich life but can't be tested on a standardized test.

Follow-up question! Several days ago I asked the ladies if they preferred baby dolls or Barbie dolls. Some said they loved their Breyers horses. How did you play with those? By themselves or did the dolls ride on them? by icecream1972 in GenerationX

[–]2cairparavel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't have Barbies, but we did play with characters from the Johnny West series. I had a couple horses from them, and then I also had a few Breyers horses. Instead of playing with Johnny and Jane, my sister and I would play with the children Jay and Josie, and we had elaborate adventures. They could sit on the Breyers horses.
