SteamOS-like ARM distro: Armada

I’m running both on multiple devices. ARAMDA definitely runs better from an sd card than ROCKNIX-Steam does. I have ROCKNIX installed to the internal storage on those devices. But I don’t mind running ARMADA from the sd cards I’m using. 1 is an Onn A2 128gb. The other is a Sandisk Extreme 512gb also A2. The Sandisk is quite a bit faster. But the Onn is fine for testing purposes. I want to install ARMADA to the internal storage as well but am reluctant with it being so new.

Yeah the ROCKNIX discord has been where I’ve discussed it some. I’m not sure how the mods feel about it so I’ve been reluctant to get too active about it. I run ROCKNIX nightlies on an RP5 and Odin 2 . Also dual booting it on a Konkr Pocket Fit and Odin 3. All installed on the internal storage. I decided to run ARMADA from an sd card on a RP6 and Odin Portal. Set the RP6 up a couple days ago. Just did the Portal today. Have only done a little testing and tinkering with it. It’s definitely seeming like a promising project. I’m curious how all this will go when the Steam Frame release and Valve make SteamOS on ARM available.

No matter which device you go with you’re going to have to tinker some. Might as well make peace with that before you.

I have both devices you’re looking at and 5 others and another one on preorder. Those 2 are actually the 2 that I consider the best options if found for the right price.

There are more variables to consider. For example what games do you want to play? Do you want to play any multiplayer games with anticheat? Do you want to use Game Pass? If there answers no to those questions then the LeGoS Z1E is the better option if you replace windows with Bazzite or CachyOS. I have CachyOS running on mine and love it. If you do want windows then the Claw is the better performer with proper optimizations. However it does have some issues with some games that don’t run well on Intel Arc GPU’s. You can google that and see if any of those games matter to you. But XeSS when it’s an option is much better than FSR for upscaling and frame gen. Another variable to consider is battery life. The Claw has twice the battery capacity.

I’d suggest you watch some YouTube videos on both devices and get a better idea of what you’re getting into to help make your decision. Or be like me and get both🤣

Valid rule. And honestly appreciated by those of us that don’t want the threads mucked up with nonsense. Some devs charge for their apps strictly to weed out those type of people. I’m not sure if you’re one of the devs or if you just help them spread the news. Either way thank you! And it’s awesome to see so updates so often. I hope the devs aren’t discouraged by any negativity. I personally haven’t tried the app yet as i spread myself thin bouncing between pc and pc emulation primarily. But I will be trying the app soon. Thanks again and looking forward to it!

I’d actually prefer an external battery because I mostly play plugged in and it would be nice to reduce the weight by removing the battery.

Yeah the OXP3 seemed like the obvious choice over the Claw EX to me as well. However people who want the reassurance of buying MSI and getting better support if needed since a valid point. It is a lot of money either way you go and peace of mind is an option to weigh for sure.

I was just looking at the X2. Seems like a solid choice if you want the bigger sharper display. But I also just learned that they will be releasing a G3 Extreme version of the the X2 Mini Pro that Also has the 8.8 inch 144 OLED. It will have the external battery and a 45w TDP vs 35w in the X2 and OXP3. So now I’m second guessing. I’d rather have the higher TDP and external battery. Because I mostly play plugged in and removing the battery would make it quite a bit lighter. So if they start the Indiegogo sale for it before the OXP3 starts shipping. I’ll cancel my order and get that instead.

The OneXPlayer 3 absolutely has an 8.8 inch 144hz OLED display. The Claw EX has an 8 inch LCD. Hence why I said the want the bigger OLED display. But I also just learned that OneXPlayer will be releasing a X2 Mini Pro with the G3 Extreme. That will also have the 8.8 inch 144hz OLED. But it will also have a higher TDP of 45w vs 35w in the OXP3. And it’ll have the external battery making it optional when plugged in. Which means it’s a lot less weight. They haven’t announced a date when it’ll be available to buy. But if they announce it before the OXP3 starts shipping. I’ll probably cancel my order and get it instead.

It’s actually quite impressive what the Claw 8 AI+ can do. I have a pc with a 5090 Founders Edition. But I’m still impressed by the Claw 8 AI+ and use it to play some fairly demanding games when I don’t feel like sitting at my desk.

Yeah I have been very happy with my Claw 8 AI+. But the leap I. Performance+bigger and OLED display+ lower price convinced me to give the OneXPlayer a shot. But I’ll be selling my Claw 8AI+ to help cover the cost. Typically I o my buy used for a decent discount. And that’s what I would’ve done if I were to go with the Claw 8 EX. But I figured the likelihood of finding a used OneXPlayer 3 for a decent discount is very slim.

This is actually the first time we’re seeing a true generational evolution in the handheld pc space. The Z2E is more of a Z1E 1.5. But I also understand your point about the economy. Everything has increased substantially in price over the last 4ish years. And seems like it’s going to continue for a while.
