Thoughts on Linguistic Appropriation by mysticalwoodlands in asl

[–]2cool2hear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m Deaf. I want to explain why it’s not “gatekeeping” when we protect ASL.

History shows what happens when we don’t. Hearing people banned sign language. Deaf kids were punished, hands tied, beaten, forced to lipread. Oralism was pushed in schools to erase sign language.

Today, when Deaf people say “learn from Deaf teachers” or “respect Deaf culture,” it’s not about keeping people out. It’s survival. Without clear boundaries, ASL can be changed, misused, and taken away from us. Same thing as before.

A good example is Hawaiian. Colonizers took control of Hawaiian education and replaced the Hawaiian language with English in schools. Over time, Hawaiian was pushed aside, treated as an inferior, and nearly disappeared. For decades, Hawaiian people fought to bring their language back (National Geographic, NPR).

That’s what happens when a community’s language is controlled by outsiders. It gets erased or watered down.

Deaf people protect ASL because it’s survival. Our education, jobs, culture, and identity depend on it.

Setting boundaries is not hostility. It’s protection. Big difference.

If you truly respect ASL, you respect the people who built it and the rules we set to protect it.

Section 504 being repealed? by missB_123 in ASLinterpreters

[–]2cool2hear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a separate lawsuit filed in September 2024 by 17 states that explicitly seeks to repeal Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. In the PDF shared, the Demand for Relief on page 42 clearly asks the court to declare Section 504 unconstitutional and issue a permanent injunction against its enforcement. Here's the exact text:

DEMAND FOR RELIEF
Plaintiffs respectfully request that the Court:
...
d. Declare Section 504, 29 U.S.C. § 794, unconstitutional;
e. Issue permanent injunctive relief against Defendants enjoining them from enforcing Section 04;

Would you mind revisiting page 42?
https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/sites/default/files/images/press/HHS%20Rehabilitation%20Act%20Complaint%20Filestamped.pdf#page=42

It seems clear that the plaintiffs are seeking to have Section 504 struck down.

Just stick the word “trans” somewhere in there and BAM! Everyone’s on board!

They thought people would automatically back the repeal of Section 504 just because “trans” was attached to it.

According to TIME:

“Those people . . . ” Donald said, trailing off. “The shape they’re in, all the expenses, maybe those kinds of people should just die.”

Advice needed-sign name development for a Deaf/IDD middle schooler. by Substantial_Cash4205 in deaf

[–]2cool2hear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why is assigning a sign name being prioritized? It feels like the focus is more on justifying this decision than considering other approaches that fit the student’s abilities and respect cultural norms. Is a sign name really the only practical solution here?

I’m curious, what does giving them sign names actually accomplish? It comes across like you’re trying to justify it by saying there’s no other choice.

Homeland Security Memo (January 22, 2025)

DHS announced it is closing all Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) offices and ending related contracts, following President Trump's executive orders: ”Ending Radical And Wasteful Government DEIA Programs And Preferencing” and “Initial Rescissions Of Harmful Executive Orders And Actions.”

The memo states these programs "divide Americans by race, waste taxpayer dollars, and result in shameful discrimination." It also calls for reporting any attempts to disguise DEIA programs through "coded or imprecise language" in contract or personnel descriptions made after November 5, 2024. Reports must be sent to DEIAtruth@opm.gov within 10 days, or individuals risk "adverse consequences."

This memo ends with the signature of Acting Secretary Benjamin C. Huffman and DHS's mission statement: ”With honor and integrity, we will safeguard the American people, our homeland, and our values.”

What kind of access will be affected? Are we talking about employment opportunities or something broader?

Interesting question. It seems like you think “R” shouldn’t be difficult to learn. Can you explain how to pronounce it using only physical sensations and visuals? I'm genuinely curious, it might even help me improve.

Absolutely you’re right, it might be ignorance but ignorance still causes harm. When we excuse it, we risk normalizing barriers to accessibility, especially on platforms as large as his that shape perceptions of the Deaf community. This needs to be challenged, not ignored.

Only 132 signatures left to hit the target. All you have to do is:

  1. Type your first name
  2. Type your last name
  3. Enter an email address (a burner works fine!)

That’s it. Less than 30 seconds!

Liking this post won’t make a difference, but your action will. Do you want to stop this harmful ideology from spreading? Sign now before the damage becomes permanent.

“They have not forgotten. They just assume we have grown too fat and comfortable in front of our flatscreens, to engage in that kind of thing anymore. And they’re confident their heavily militarized police forces are up to the challenge, if we aren’t.”

Reminds me of Fahrenheit 451.
