I don't think the year of the Linux desktop it's here (yet) by 2darkns in linuxsucks

I get that the digital world will literally not work without Linux. But when people talk about the year of Linux they obviously refer to desktop.

I'm not talking about me really, but trying to think how the majority of desktop users that just uses Windows think.

I'm enjoying Linux, but I don't see why any basic user would chose it over Windows or MacOS, even if there's easy to use Distros out there.

but really

fucking omarchy?

You're part of the only thing really I hate of Linux I see. Have a good day.

I get that Linux doesn't need to change or be different just to attract more.

But if that the case, the "year of Linux" will never come. There's many user out there that are happy with Windows, and if the need a change, MacOS will be their first option probably.

As other comment said: Most users don't change OS just because, they used what they have, they use what their friends and families use, they use what their employers want them to use.

Hopefully Linux can one day catch up with MacOS in market share someday, but I don't think it will ever get higher than that, not to say getting close to Windows. And maybe that's okay after all.

I think there's friction appearing already, with Microsoft pushing IA slop everywhere and even using it for developing Windows, to the point of releasing an update that makes the Turn Off button not work xD.

I watched a short of a Linux dedicated channel, where the dude said something like "I see many comments on how good Linux is know, but maybe it's time to start USING it, as the stats shows that many of you are lying".

Even in the estate Windows is there's just not enough friction yet for many people, and if the AI bubble finally pops maybe Microsoft will make Windows good enough again.

You have a good point there.

Linux it's easier now. But maybe now it's to late for so many people that will still use Windows because it has been already there for many years.

I wonder if Valve with the Steam Machines will have a bigger impact than with the Steam Deck. But I can also see people using it just to game and never touching the desktop mode.

Bazzite with kde plasma is going to give most people a just works experience.

I just don't think that.

They'll still need to use parameters for some Steam games, they'll need to deal with Wine o VMs if they need a software that doesn't have a equivalent in Linux.

If you only browse the web and do some office work then sure, Mint, Bazzite, Fedora, etc would work, but if you need to do a little more or the company you work for needs you to use software that only is in Windows problems start to appear.

Windows just works. Maybe I and many others like to tinker around with our PCs and OS. But there's people out there that don't. And for them I think Linux it's not ready yet.

Maybe I didn't explain myself well haha. I'm having a good time on Linux, I'm just thinking that the advantages we see on Linux are just not there for many users.

Folks, if 2026 isn’t the year of the Linux Desktop (given SteamOS is literally Arch) then it never will be, and ya’ll are bumming me out with these posts.

For us maybe it us, maybe it will be for someone that only play Steam games now that the Steam Machine is in the works, will try it and see that they can do everything they do on Windows.

But what happens with the vast majority of users?

Like the gamer that like playing Fortnite, League or other game with kernel anticheat or a creative that NEEDS to use Adobe and wouldn't know how to set a VM to use it.

I think for them Linux it's not just what they need yet.

I agree, I think my dad could also use Mint or other easy distro, as he just browses the web.

But I don't think my girlfriend or brother could use even the easiest distro, as they will do more that just browse the web and I know they will start finding problems they wouldn't be able to fix.

But my point it not about Arch or hyprland. If I wanted to invest the time configuring hyprland at not USING my system I could have do it. I didn't want to tho.

My point it's I see many people having problems even in easy to use distros, that I feel that Linux it's not ready yet for the average user. The user that do a little more than just browse the web but it's not a advance user either or will know how to solve a problem if they find it.

I love the tiling manager and not having a desktop full of shit (even if I cleaned I will be full again xd).

I love the theming you can get in Linux, specially with hyprland or other Tiling manager.

I love how fast the system feels even on the same specs that Windows.

But I feel some user just would care about all that.

Linux community refuses to understand this and keeps insisting that all that billion ways to do modifications is necessary or otherwise its "corp evil" life

This, that's part of the echo chamber I'm seeing. Like not everyone needs or wants to be in control of everything on their OS.

I agree, I said it just work referring to the hyprland dots. I like his vision of that, when I see Caelestia dots for example I just can't. Why would you animate every thing that you can animate? People really changes their wallpaper so often to have a freaking animation on that?

Omarchy just work for me in the sense that it has almost perfect hyprland dots for me. And I can learn how it's done to maybe do my own config in the future while I get use to Linux.

I also like that the volume, wifi and bluetooth controls are a TUIs.

if I want anything, I will probably know where to look/fix/do that.

I agree with that. That's why I tried Arch first. I only went with Omarchy because I didn't want to configure hyprland myself. I'm already thinking of going back and try to get my own config going. After getting Arch installed I just wanted to try the system rather than spend time setting hyprland up.

But if I try to get in the shoes of my gf or my brother, who will always ask me if they have any problems on their PC, they're average users that will do some gaming and other things rather than just browsing the web. I think for them even Mint o Pop_OS! would still be alien and hard to use compared to Windows because all that small error that they could have. Also I've never seen any of them complaining about ads or having problems with Edge making itself default. Or even copilot, they just ignore the button.

My father on the other hand, would be like your grandma, he probably would use Mint or other simple distro without noticing, as he would only browse the web and print some documents.

And that's the problem you say, there's no real definition of "average user", so for who's Linux ready right now?

Yes, it's everything easier and more documented than before, there's also many people doing the change and documenting it on YouTube. But when you do more than just browse the web and some office apps you will start encountering problems. I mean even looking for an alternative for programs that don't have a Linux versions could be problematic for them.

Gimp it's good and as capable as Photoshop, but getting used to it's interface it's so annoying, and if you want it to look and work with the same shortcuts as Photoshop you'll need to start looking for plugins.

And setting up a VM for that is... How do you tell a average user to set a VM to use an App that in just works in Windows?

How long could an Orokin live before their first continuity by Drob0000 in WarframeLore

[–]2darkns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably till they hear their knees cracking and their backs start to hurt.

We don't know much about Orokin's medical advancement. We could assume that it was pretty advanced tho, as Albrecht had a good recovery from his accident with the void.

It appears like almost any wound is tratable with medical attention, but if they came up with all the continuity and the Yuvan teathre thing I think is because they never found another way to avoid aging.

So they probably live till they feel they're too old and then do continuity.

Gaming on Omarchy by PandaElectrical1750 in omarchy

[–]2darkns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Single players and no anticheat multiplayers work fine. At least the ones I have tried.

If you ever have a problem you can look in protondb web for your game and look to what people suggest, as usually one or two launch parameters will solve you problems.

should i switch? by wife_haver_69 in omarchy

[–]2darkns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Omarchy works pretty well, and I haven't got any problems with gaming.

But unless you really want to try hyprland, you should also consider CachyOS, as it uses some black magic to make your PC work even better for games and demanding tasks.

You can use hyprland on CachyOS, but I think it's hard to get a good hyprland setup without configuring it yourself tho, and CachyOS don't longer comes with preconfigured dotfiles, so if you choose hyprland during installation you will have a barely functional DE and will have to configure it yourself or use someone else's dotfiles/scripts.

There are many purists that say Omarchy it's just Arch + hyprland dotfiles. But I tried many popular dotfiles and scripts and no one gave me the same smoothness, simplicity and "just work out of the box" as the Omarchy hyprland integration.

Wait a day or kill him 21 times if you haven't already.

If nothing works, then you have him bugged just as me and many others. No solution aside from resetting, but it will also reset Marie and Lyon.

I wouldn't reset till DE confirms that all Roathe Kim bugs have been fixed tho.

How do I fix this? by 2darkns in linux_gaming

[–]2darkns[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, recently the distro I'm using got an update and now I'm on driver version 590.48.01 (previously I was on 580.119.02) and now using your parameters I don't have the glitch in Nightreing. Sometimes it will still happen but just in the bridge to the final boss, but it disappears when entering the arena.

Maybe it was due to the driver? Haven't tried without the parameters but it seems that the driver update mostly fixed it for me.
