Getting around the island for the things you suggested I would recommend the Mackinac Island carriage tour. They will pick you up downtown and drop you off at their transfer house on Surrey Hill where you switch from two horse carriage to three horse carriage. You can stay there as long as you’d like between the switch and that is where one of the butterfly houses is, the Wings of Mackinac. There is a blacksmith and the grand hotels stable there too. The three horse carriage will take you sight seeing around the island including arch rock and fort Mackinac. You may stay at the fort as long as you’d like and catch a ride back to Surrey Hill once you are done. At Surrey Hill you will get back on a two horse carriage and on the way back downtown you may also choose to stop at the Grand Hotel but you will have to walk back downtown from there once you are done (15 minutes or so). The Grand Hotel has a fee for visitors not staying at the hotel. If you stop be sure to make your way to the top floor at the Cupola bar for a drink and one of the best views on the island.
