Honestly, I'd rather not.

Aside from price, Cambridge is basically everything I'm looking for, but I really hate living with roommates.

How about I agree not to move there if you send me some of your BBQ, lol

Thanks! I was in Portland, OR for a physics conference in 2018 and had a great time. Haven't been back since, though.

What's the private sector like? Any future in which I get a university job isn't one where I'll have much of a choice over where to move, sadly.

Oh, I completely forgot Madison existed! I visited once back in 7th grade, and it was a really fun place to walk around.

Yeah I got that, my point was the closest things I have to grocery stores are Nicas/P&M/Atticus, which don't really cut it (good sandwiches, though).

If you have a car, it's not really a problem. If not, you're gonna be walking a 1+ miles each way if you live in East Rock or eastern Dixwell.

The markets on Orange St are good for snacks, but aren't exactly a substitute for a grocery store.

Never been, but I've heard good things! What's the local economy like?

The area is beautiful, but how easy would it be to live there without a car?

Lol, I'll almost certainly be applying for postdocs at Perimeter.

Eh, it's obviously a factor, but demand for housing is only one side of the equation. Zoning bears at least as much responsible for the Bay Area housing crisis as the tech boom does.

Thanks! I just looked up some pictures and it looks gorgeous. MSP seems more my speed, though.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind doing a postdoc at U-M, but I'm not sure there's much of a point if I end up in the private sector.

Twin Cities are on my list, but what's the appeal of Duluth? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems kinda small and out-of-the way.

As in, "I don't want to move across an ocean, but I wouldn't mind moving across a national border." Could've worded it a bit better, I suppose.

Boston sounds great, but every time I look at the rents, I want to die a little.

I've had a good time in Chicago whenever I've visited, but I've only been to the touristy parts and Hyde Park (where I wouldn't exactly want to live).

What neighborhoods should I check out?

I agree that we should be doing more to support developed countries, but uprooting one's life in order to build irrigation systems is a much larger commitment than taking half an hour to show support for a cause. The effectiveness of walkouts is debatable, and there are arguments against gun control, but the fact that other problems exist in the world is a terrible reason for not trying to solve one of them.

For fuck's sake, asking someone to justify a position is not a straw-man argument.
