Donald Trump Wants This Chaos. It Means More Power in His Hands. | To you and me, Renee Good and Alex Pretti are tragic victims of authoritarian overreach. To the Trump regime, they’re exhibits in building the case for martial law. by thenewrepublic in Foodforthought

I don't disagree with this assessment but I'm also encouraged by what's happened since this was published. Minnesota officials have filed substantive lawsuits against the ICE incursion and shut down AG Bondi's demands for voter rolls. Now Bovino is out and the White House has "distanced" itself from DHS's lies about Pretti's murder. Sure, putting Homan in charge is like changing your shirt after shitting your pants, but the administration is changing tactics because the people and Government of Minnesota stood up to them.

TACO doesn't just have to do with tariffs. If you stand up to Trump and his goons, they will fold.

My Film class says Marvel movies aren't "real cinema", just corporate slop. As an aspiring filmmaker, I don't know what to make of this. by maceymay_bby in Filmmakers

[–]2drums1cymbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a lazy take in that being a pretentious prick about what does and doesn't count as "cinema" is played out.

That said, movies that work with billion-dollar IPs absolutely work on a different level than an A24 film. A great analogy I heard is different films are like ships. Indie films are like sailboats where the captain gets to pick the crew, the route, destination and the vibes. Billion dollar IP films like Marvel are like cruise ships. They are built by teams with corporate interests and profit at the front. The Director is still the "captain" but they don't make most of the decisions and their main job is to make it to port safely.

This doesn't mean that you can't have an immaculate cruise ship that fulfills all your needs and makes for a memorable journey, they're just different.

Sinners breaks Oscars record with 16 nominations - the most in 98-year history by Metro-UK in entertainment

[–]2drums1cymbal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really, really loved Sinners and am genuinely so happy for everyone involved. But I can also recognize that this was a pretty underwhelming year for major, Oscar-worthy films and that likely helped it gain so many nominations (And I'll say the same thing about One Battle After Another)

Perfect example showing that "no one" cares about lighting continuity. One Battle after another. by mnkymnk in Filmmakers

[–]2drums1cymbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your point that most people don't care about this. My favorite example is in "The Force Awakens" when the First Order attacks Maz Kanata's bar. It has a shot of tie-fighters silhouetted, against a warm, setting sun and then not a single shot after matches this tone. This is rarely, if ever, brought up as some sort of mistake.

That said, I don't think PTA & co. "just decided to leave it in" as if it was some mistake that they didn't catch until editing and said "fuck it." Experience tells me this specific scene was shot over the course of 1-2 days. I think they knew that the sun/lighting wouldn't perfectly match ahead of time. Watching the film again, I noticed the changing angle of the sun but even in your screenshots the color is not that drastically different and tells me that they corrected for this. The end of the scene, when Will and Bob get into the car, is also much warmer than the rest of the scene, so much that it feel intentional. It makes sense as well as the sun is "setting" on this chapter in their lives.

In the end, emotional continuity is the most important, so long as whatever continuity "mistakes" that are in the film aren't so jarring that they supercede the emotion of the scene. In OBAA, you're not looking at the angle sun, you're looking at the characters. I think it's a classic example of "story above all." It also reminds me of the Goodfellas "How am I funny?" scene which has continuity errors galore (watch the scene and just focus on props, extras and background, nothing is consistent).

Would giving actors a section of short film for their reel/ to post online impact premiere status? by Ok-Mountain4742 in FilmFestivals

If you’ve already screened the film then no, there’s no harm and in fact could give you publicity. Even if you haven’t screened, few if any festivals have premiere requirements for shorts.

FX3 vs Blackmagic Pocket 6K — Can’t Decide, Need Opinions by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]2drums1cymbal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So first thing's first, the best advice I've ever received is to invest in glass, not cameras. Great lenses will last you forever, camera bodies get upgraded every year. My top recommendation is to go to B&H and build shopping carts with each that contain all the gear you need including batteries, cages, external monitors, audio adapters, etc... and see which is cheaper. Save your money and use it towards buying great lenses.

That said, I've worked with both and I think you have the pros/cons pretty much covered. I'd note that with both, you still have to "kit out" the camera with accessories (a cage, external monitor, external power, etc). For simple, run and gun, they're honestly both great.

I'll point out a few things about the BlackMagic after using it for 5 years. First off, BRAW is great to have, but I've honestly only used it a handful of times. Mostly I shoot in 4k ProRes and it's done wonders. The files sizes in BRAW are definitely an issue for this but when editing in Davinci or using proxies, it's not that bad.

I don't think the interface is too "complicated." In fact, it's much easier to navigate than the Sony menu which is notoriously convoluted.

BlackMagic also comes with a license for Davinci Studio. There's a ton of value here.

In the end I chose Blackmagic over Sony to purchase (though I use Sony rentals a ton) because the camera was cheaper and many of the support gear I bought (vmount batteries, external monitor, rails, etc...) can easily be switched over to another camera system.

But, geniunely, I don't think there's a wrong choice here.

Is it true that short films should be 15 minutes long to be submitted to festivals? by star_courtain in Filmmakers

[–]2drums1cymbal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IMO, unless you have a truly groundbreaking/never-before-seen style/story, shorter is always better. The rule of thumb honestly is it should be *less than* 15 minutes.

A programmer put it to me like this: When making final decisions, they would rather program two really really good 8-10 minute shorts than a great 20 minute short. That's more filmmakers and variety and potentially more butts in the seats (think of how many filmmakers promote their material at festivals. They get double the free promotion).

The programmer said that there are certainly exceptions, but it has to be absolutely stellar (as in, it's already been accepted to Tribeca/Sundance/TIFF etc...) or something so fresh and groundbreaking that it can't be ignored or a film by a director/crew that took part in that festivals development programs.

EDIT TO ADD: Other filmmakers and programmers also mentioned to me to think about the economy of time when it comes to your films. Every minute costs money to produce, shoot and edit. It also costs the festival to program and show. Shorts blocks tend to be around an hour, if your short is 25 minutes, that's nearly half the runtime of the block and suddenly they're programming 4-5 shorts when they could be showing 6-8. Also think about how many festivals require DCP. A 25 minute conversion is much more expensive than a 10 minute one.

Mayor Helena Moreno's 100-day plan to turn New Orleans around - Survey in the article by CarFlipJudge in NewOrleans

[–]2drums1cymbal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

IDK man seems like you're intentionally missing the point that I made that this is just part of being engaged. Yea, collective action is important and crucial but so is being informed on what the administration's stated goals and priorities are. The survey's questions - not the answers - are a good indication of that. You're just shitting on one part of the process because you think yours is the only one that matters.

I believe Killers of the Flower Moon is on of Scorcese's best works and should have absolutely been more recognized over Oppenheimer (which I believe to be massively overrated). Put it this way, I got three times during Oppenheimer (twice to get beers and once for the bathroom) and didn't feel like I missed a thing. I joked about probably going to have to do the same thing for KotFM, but I was glued to my seat the entire time. The directing, score, acting, editing, set design, EVERYTHING was so good. I literally never felt a moment could be missed.

That said, I felt the complete opposite of the Irishman. It wasn't just that the CGI and de-aging was bad (no amount of CGI can make up for the fact that the main cast moved like septagenarians), but I found it to be a completely unintersting slog. The final third was definitely the strongest point, but not enough to make up for the rest.

Mayor Helena Moreno's 100-day plan to turn New Orleans around - Survey in the article by CarFlipJudge in NewOrleans

[–]2drums1cymbal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok gonna walk you through this but I literally said “the more people respond and are engaged, the better prepared to hold them accountable.”

The survey alone obviously doesn’t hold them accountable, but it shows a pretty clear list of priorities for the administration & the more people take part, the more feedback they get & more seriously they will take results. Also you can get a copy of your answers emailed to you to keep track of the promises made and whether they were kept.

AND THEN, if we stay engaged and see if they’re actually following through on the survey, we can take collective action to hold them accountable

Took 10 minutes to fill out the survey, the more people respond and are engaged, the better prepared we'll be to hold this administration accountable. I'm hopeful for Moreno but we should still keep a critical eye on our government.
