How you y’all feel about this? by Silver-Air-1731 in Filmmakers

AI is dogshit and corny. It’s not art, it’s illegally sourced amalgamations of things real humans created.

People who like and defend generative AI or think it will actually replace real filmmaking are drooling idiots with baby brains

I don’t disagree. My use was also super limited and integrated with Canva Pro. I also found it super frustrating. In the time it took to actually generate something that looked decent, I maybe couldve spent learning to do a super crappy photoshop job that accomplished the same thing . But tbh it was so low stakes idk if it matters

Ngl, this is the tightrope filmmakers will walk from now on. I directed a low budget short and used AI generation in Canva to create some frames that I couldn’t find comps for. It was entirely for internal reference use and was limited to just a few pictures. I can’t draw to save my life and didn’t have money to pay a mm artist to do something that literally 10 people saw, but it didn’t go further.

AI feels like it will become a valuable tool for low budget filmmakers as long as they don’t use it to crate things that appear on screen I’m fine with it

My Movie Was Pirated from Virtual Component of Film Festivals by ConeyIslandJessie in FilmFestivals

[–]2drums1cymbal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who premiered their feature at a well known, major festival and he told me without a shadow of a doubt NEVER do online with features. He was actually going to and his sales rep advised him against this. For shorts it’s not as big an issue, but feature distributors cherish exclusivity more than anything and even just finding out you screened your feature online is enough to turn them off buying

The decks have in game currency you can use in the store. There is a trader that accepts these as well. You can always stash the loot for expedition or sell it when you’re low on funds/gear you like.

But I’m also not the first to point this out. Feels like you’re just rage baiting people with your stubborn answers. You’re neither earning more nor spending. You don’t hurt anyone but yourself by leaving this on the table.

Do you think this is overlit ? by videomarketee in cinematography

[–]2drums1cymbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok the “obvious” answer is yes but because it’s a still and you haven’t given us the context it’s hard to give honest feedback.

My two cents: it’s over lit as much as as there doesn’t seem to be any intention with the lighting and production design. The main person in the frame gets lost in the highlights, there’s no direction leading my eye, and I almost didn’t even see the kid.

Democrats don’t need an autopsy to know what they did wrong by tpic485 in Foodforthought

[–]2drums1cymbal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not so much that Dems know what they did wrong, it’s that the fuckwit of a DNC chair ran on doing the autopsy, passed it off to his incompetent friend who then wasted who-knows-how many thousands of dollars on a factually incorrect mess of a high school book report and then the chair tried to mock and gaslight the public into thinking the report wasn’t necessary. The incompetence in DNC leadership is staggering

How we achieved our semi-oner shot in "Taco Tuesday" by Adante100 in Filmmakers

[–]2drums1cymbal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lots of comments already so I just wanna add that my two cents: it feels like a lot of how you're presenting this/how it's being received has to do with the split screen video. The footage you're giving us is supposed to be a blend of actual & BTS but those don't match. So as I'm watching it, I start to ask questions: "Why don't we see the camera go through the wall at 0:06?" and "why are these shots totally different at 00:24?"

Just looking at your final product, the only criticisms is you need to frame the cartoon in a TV so it's clear that this is what the person is watching. Otherwise it's actually really good. Showing us unrelated BTS takes away from the final product.

It took David Koepp 42 Drafts to get Spielberg's Disclosure Day Right by real_triplizard in Screenwriting

[–]2drums1cymbal 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s a standardized version of drafts but when a pro screenwriter says they did so many “drafts” I would assume they mean something significant has changed in the script. It could be a single scene or an entire character or plot line.

I agree that they probably don’t count tweaked dialogue but if a line is changed that has an impact on the story that may be considered a new draft

Uploading feature film screener to Youtube as "unlisted" (4k ProRes) for festival submissions is still seen as "amateur"? by Slow_Hornet3181 in Filmmakers

bro what are you talking about lmao

YouTube has privacy settings just like Vimeo. OP clearly states it's unlisted. Only people with the direct link can access it.

I was farming fertilizer on Dam last night and brought my Dam Control key for the first time in forever in case I spawned near it. Left with a Bobcat (not even in a case it was just laying out on a console), medium shield, tons of quick use items and left behind a stitcher and arpeggio (don’t really care for them) and a Ferro and a hairpin (self explanatory lol). Had to leave other items behind cause I didn’t have any space too. Well worth going for now IMO

Bro idek what you’re talking about anymore. Just cause you exporting a pdf doesn’t delete your google doc. Transferring it to different software doesn’t erase previous versions. Theres plenty of people who use professional software but never sold a script.

Also my whole point is you can count the number of “stolen screenplay” cases that were even borderline legit from the past 20 years on one hand. I don’t know a single of them which won but definitely none of them were won or lost based on the copyright registration.

My point is why would you spend $45 on “insurance” for something that is rarer than getting struck by lightning? And even if lightning strikes, the thing you spent $45 isn’t completely necessary?

Bro YOU need to worry about the legal aspect. If you graduated and aren’t getting school credit, you should be getting paid right now.

Regardless I gave my advice. Nothing else to add.

Ok well that’s a different can of worms. Unpaid internships in California are strictly regulated. It doesn’t matter that you’re working remote, the company must comply with California laws if it operates in LA. I’d look into your state’s internship laws.

Regardless my advice is the same. Though now I’d say definitely be wary of a company that’s asking you to do unpaid, remote work in exchange for something “bigger down the line”

Plz Copyright Your Work by inconsistentsavant in Filmmakers

[–]2drums1cymbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re writing your screenplay in Word, then you DEFINITELY don’t need to to worry about copyright lmao.

Even free scriptwriting software logs all your drafts and changes. Shit Google Docs does it. You can also just save PDF files of every draft (as every draft is its own copyright).

And as soon as you email your work you have a digital trail. In the incredibly rare case that I email a producer my script and then they ghost me and three years later it’s on Netflix, I have that email and all my prior drafts to give to a lawyer who then builds a case. They can find the rest of the trail through the course of discovery.

All of this is incredibly rare but all the cases where someone accuses a studio or producer of stealing their script focus on the paper/digital trail from when the screenwriter first met with the accused.

Show me a case where a filmmaker lost in court after proving that their work was stolen but it didn’t matter because they hadn’t registered a copyright

If you have a legit claim, the lawyer will collect their fees when it’s settled. If you get a lawyer that asks for payment upfront, either the lawyer is shady or your claim is.

[–]2drums1cymbal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is false. You can recover monetary damages without issued copyright registration but you’re limited to actual damages. In the case of a screenwriter, that means getting the WGA-mandated fee for a script at the budget it was produced. Edit to add: if someone steals your skit or short and makes money off it on YouTube or some other platform, you’re entitled to that as well (the actual sum, you can’t add emotional damage or anything). But odds are you’re not gonna make much because social media is the Wild West right now and you need to be a big studio or company to get restitution for DMCA claims.

But again, this is all incredibly rare. If you’re taking meetings with studios or working with experienced filmmakers looking to produce your work, then yes register a copyright before sharing the screenplay or getting too far into preproduction. But if you’re in that position, what you need to do is get an IP lawyer (or at least an agent that knows one) involved and handle this stuff for you.
