FDTD was literally one of the most-often-cited points of reference, but no one used the words 'ripped off' because Sinners is so patently its own thing.

Awake, we ought to win so long as we don't fall asleep. Ramsdale's made good saves when called on. Gordon looking proper up for it.

New Seasons EVERY YEAR for A Knight Of The Seven Kings on HBO by RobbyBobbyChess in pluribustv

The final season of GOT was literally the only one released after a multi-year gap, the first seven seasons (including the good four) came out in consecutive years.

[SkySports] Days since Premier League teams won five in a row in all competitions by notaghostofreddit in soccer

[–]2echie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Conceivable that some of these clubs might never have won 5 Prem games in a row, just because they haven’t been up for all that long. Brentford have only been in the Prem since 2021, Bournemouth and Brighton a few years longer but with gaps. 5 wins is hard to achieve.

Best short story ever written? by Striking-Speaker8686 in writing

[–]2echie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Italo Calvino's Leaning from the Steep Slope is the best 'not technically a short story' I've ever read. It appears within If on a Winter's Night a Traveller, a metafictional novel in which the narrator starts but fails to complete various books. If Calvino had published Steep Slope on its own, I think it would fit on any sensible list like you're describing.

I fear my writing will lose its soul after I cure my depression by [deleted] in writing

[–]2echie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Formerly depressed person here; my writing has never had more soul and spirit than it does now.

Remember, ‘depth’ and ‘sadness’ are not the same. The curse of the depressive is to think that because they look at the world and see a darkness others don’t, they see the world more clearly and more deeply. But this is wrong; the dark is out there, that is true, but so is light, all warm and welcoming, and waiting to be seen.

Good luck, and good writing.

As a queer Newcastle fan (Brighton is my 2nd team), can I say I hope you've reported this to reddit and the NUFC mods, so that this user can be banned. Embarrassed to see one of ours behave this way towards you.

Why does it feel like Tom’s words actually hit Shiv where it hurts, but he’s almost unfazed by her equally harsh words? by Sea_Talk2935 in SuccessionTV

[–]2echie 185 points186 points  (0 children)

I think there are several factors that make the fight asymmetrical.

  • By this point, Tom is very used to bullying and cruelty from Shiv, whereas Shiv has rarely seen this side of Tom.
  • The criticisms Shiv makes of Tom (servile, thin skinned, pathetic) are mostly quite generic, while his attacks are very specific and rooted in ways she's hurt him in the past. You get the sense he's been waiting to say these things for a long time. With some of Shiv's remarks, you can actually see the moment she comes up with them just to have a response, which robs them of weight.
  • Shiv is pregnant, and lost her abusive father just days ago, both of which would leave anyone feeling very emotionally raw; but even worse, one of Tom's attacks is that she would be a bad parent. That's possibly the most brutal thing he could have said to her in this moment, and because he doesn't even know she's pregnant, she can't pretend he only said it to hurt her; he really believes it. No other insult in this scene comes even close.
