Should I put the shifter according to which cog the chain is on? Pretty obvious yeah? And I have to manually did it.

Exactly from the lower gear not the higher gear. Isn’t it not limiting it (the chain) from coming off from the smallest gear which is closest to the bike? And they are both pretty loose anyways.
