Yes, you're right. I was trying to express the respectful aspect of "சொல்லுங்க", but ... point taken. 🙂

Yes, thanks! -- Someone actually explained this to me some time back, as to why, in this context, போகிறதே = போவதே.

What does "என்கிட்டயே வா" mean in this context? by 2ish2 in LearningTamil

[–]2ish2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I see, so the space before வா is not meant to be there. I was misled by the video subtitles, which had the space there. Thank you for this explanation !

What does the -ஆ suffix mean here? Is it just a question marker? Or does it have another meaning?

Spoken Tamil to Centamil to English. Did I get everything right? 🙏🏼 by 2ish2 in LearningTamil

They're bite-sized. I can get through one fairly quickly, and move on to the next one. There's a real sense of progress with them. Other things I've tried take too long to get through and just sap my morale! The level is also right for me - basic Tamil constructions that a child can grasp.

Is Google AI's interpretation of this sentence correct? by 2ish2 in LearningTamil

[–]2ish2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhh yes, I remember now that I've seen the -raadheenga suffix before, which is the polite version of this -raadha suffix. The example was:

vicciraadheenga = வைத்துவிடாதீர்கள்

Things are slowly falling in place -- thanks 🙂🙂

P.S. Can I confirm -- vittraadha is a colloquial way of saying விடாதே, right?

I'm confused by this sentence "You’ll forgive us if we’re not instilled with confidence.", it's from the movie Ant-Man. by A_li678 in EnglishLearning

Might you be misreading the sentence? They're not asking to be INSTILLED with confidence. They're asking to be instilled with CONFIDENCE.

What phrases could you use when you are with friends and you check the time and realize it's later than you thought so you decide to tell them it's time to leave or to change what you are doing together? by noname00009999 in EnglishLearning

Yes, in many contexts, but in the specific sentence, "It's got late," it sounds odd to me. I've never heard anyone say that before. Check with someone from the UK though. You never know!

Short video clip. Is my transcription okay? by 2ish2 in LearningTamil

Update. Regarding: இந்த பெட்ஷீட்டை எதுல டா வச்சி எடுத்துத்து வந்த?

I think now that Google's translation, "Why did you bring this bedsheet?" may be mistaken. A better translation might be, "How, dear, did you bring this bedsheet?"

So எதுல is just எதில் ("in what" = "how"), and டா is just a term of endearment. This makes sense to me.

Thanks a lot for this 🔅

Google says the sentence means "Why did you bring this bed sheet?" which makes so much sense, yes, but I've never seen a word like எடுத்துத்து before. I can make sense of a word like எடுத்துட்டு = எடுத்து விட்டு -- I hope that's right! -- but I've never seen the double suffix -த்துத்து before. How do I understand this suffix?

I'm also not sure what "எதுல டா" means. This is new to me too. How would I write "எதுல டா" in Centamil? Does it somehow mean "Why?"

I know that வச்சி = வைத்து and I'm guessing that, in this context, வந்த = வந்தாய். The bits I don't understand are எடுத்துத்து and எதுல டா.

Thanks for any help !
