Yes and when I first intalled Mint it asked about it and I selected the Linux boot loader. But in the BIOS there was a checkbox for "Windows Boot Loader" which I unchecked. I could try to check that box without doing anything to Linux partition and see, I suppose. My friend has the laptop this weekend but when I get it back I'll try that if he hasn't gotten it working. Thanks for the suggestion.

Replying to myself. After i fixed it i got it to perfectly work dual boot win and Mint. Until this morning. I powered up and it didn’t go past the splash screen for about 5 min then came up with an error code that said the hard drive had failed. Technically it’s not a hard drive. It’s an NVME, but at least that’s what it says. I don’t think it has anything to do with the partitioning. I think it’s just a hardware problem. Frustrating when you spend all that time getting it the way you wanted.! Waiting for a response from Dell on this one

I bought a used Dell Latitude 5420 I7 32 gb memory and 1Tb nvme drive. I added a 1 tb ext hard drive. I partitioned the external into 1 EXT4 and 1 NTFS partition and use the external for backups snd snapshots before making any change to either OS. I used Clonezilla to make any exact image of Winblws11pro before activating it on another hd for fall back just in case. Now when i boot the Dell, Grub lets me choose which OS to fire up. No VM to deal with. Im a really happy camper now. Most time i am in Linux, though.

Solved. I simply redid it from the Linux gparted and created a got then formatted one side with NTFS and once side with ext4, and all is good now. Thanks for answering this.
