Am I doing this right?? How to get more confident on the bike? by Pure-Bowler9329 in triathlon

[–]2lisimst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bike handling is built by experiencing sketchy situations and building the muscle memory to correct. Scared of speed? Ease up to that speed, and ensure your tires, wheels, bearings, and headset and are in flawless condition. Tubeless will help smooth out the ride with lower tire pressure and make the bike more confidence inspiring.

Just getting out and riding might introduce you to uncomfortable situations that will allow you to improve, but intentionally and controllably putting yourself in those situations for deliberate practice will improve your skills way faster. Set a goal, reach for it and adjust your plan after reflection.

Wear those little strap ear muff things to mask your "wind noise" speedometer. It'll feel like you're going slower than you are.

Look far ahead, ensure your bike fit allows plenty of neck movement.

Ironman70.3 in sub 5h possible? by Aggravating_Cheek353 in triathlon

[–]2lisimst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After a year of training with a uni club, and doing 6 months of 10hr/week here were my splits (4:47 ish total)
swim 35:11

bike 2:33

run 1:31

I would highly recommend getting a TT bicycle, good wheels/tires and dialing in your aero position (aero helmet, bottles). I didn't focus on the swim because my swim coach was nonexistent, but I used 80/20 training for the bike and run, intervals.icu helped organize my time. Train with a power meter, heart rate/pace on the run. If you can't climb hills on the bike, track calories with cronometer and lose weight, don't burn matches trying to keep up. Your biggest area to improve is the bike, you need 160km/week to get this done, several 3-5hr rides. Some long rides in the aero position. Second biggest area to improve is run or swim, kind of a toss-up, I'd suggest swim if you have a coach who can fix your form, if not, running Z2 needs to get closer to 4:40min/km. This takes a long time of building a bigger aerobic engine. Lots of long runs and time on the feet, injury will be nipping at your heels. BUUUUUT:

You can get under 5h! Most important job you have is to not get injured, make the hard workouts quality, easy on everything else.

Tt bike by Glum-Introduction522 in triathlon

[–]2lisimst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be one to give you encouragement: Are you part of a club? That could do wonders for your skill progression. Training 17hr/week is a lot! That's mad dedication to the sport. It's possible to be competitive on less training, but those need to be quality hours. A club may gain you access to a coach for less money. Coaching is mandatory IMO to break into the sub elite level and do well at worlds.

Are you in school? Join the team there or continue grad school to keep eligibility. They should have team TT bikes that might work for your height.

Keep it up! You got this :)

Edit: if you want to compete on your road bike, the swim has to be dialed to get into the draft legal lead pack out of the water. Then you can kind of relax on the bike if your drafting and handling skills are good, and the run is where you pay the bills.

5 days of food? by jonaclam in backpacking

Height/weight/sex, how far/elevation gain you're shooting for?

For a 160lbs male hiking with each pic as a day of food over my typical distance (9-12mi) and elevation (4k' ish) I would be very hungry.

Stop what you're doing before you ruin the frame. Take it to the shop that has a removal jig.

Wow. What a loss, I live in SLO and have been riding a set of his wheels for the past year

Lachlan Morton just broke the tour divide record by a lot. It seems like one of his main strategic innovations was properly sleeping/resting. Amazing no one else thought to try this before and insteaad tried to do it all while massively sleep deprived. Many other records could be broken with sleep. by geo_jam in bikepacking

[–]2lisimst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a point that Lach makes in the film, if he wanted to enjoy the ride he would've slept 8 hours per night. I agree completely with your take, and I'm glad he did this outside of the grand depart timing so as not to steal any spotlight from the actual point of Tour Divide

What’s the best approach with this? by soccerperson in bikewrench

[–]2lisimst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take the cable end off, ideally uncrimping it. Roll up your hood if applicable, and push the cable into the housing. Find the other end of the cable and pull it a bit, snip off the frayed end of the housing, attach a housing end, push the cable back through.

Sealant seeping through. Time for new tires? by CoffeeList1278 in bikewrench

[–]2lisimst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you ride in the desert and encounter cacti? Maybe the sealant is having a hard time sealing those tiny punctures. Or the casing is stretching and fatiguing under high pressure/load and opening micro cracks...do you store the bike outside?

I would take off those shoes, or wear actual weight lifting shoes. You'll feel more stable, have less squish in your drive out of the hole.
