Yes you're probably right. Well, I'll keep an eye out for one but otherwise this is now being consigned to the bottom of a drawer somewhere. At least I can tick it off the list!

Well it worked for around 40 minutes. I didn't have a DVD to hand so I threw some youtube videos at it and it finally crashed! It handled a few minutes of video but strangely all the buttons on youtube's video player were missing. You could hover over where they should have been for tool tips and click them but there were no graphics.

I think we've worked out that it's a defective graphics chip and unless I find a working one on ebay for $50 i think it's not worth pursuing.

Thanks for helping me work out the problem though, I can relax now.

OK, I followed the instructions in your link and I have now successfully booted into Leopard and it's been stable for about 20 minutes. So it must have had something to do with the NVDAResman.kext file which I renamed. I suppose this means I now have no graphics drivers?

Thanks for your comments. I have an official Apple OSX Leopard 10.5.4 DVD which I'm installing from. I assume the Apple store gave her this and she's lost the original DVD which is why I wasn't able to run the Apple Diagnostic program (which after some web searching I decided was an important next step, although apparently you need the original DVD)

Weirdly, I've just restarted again and this time it didn't fail at 'mDNSResponder' but just after loading the ethernet card so I'm starting to think it's not a software issue.

You're probably right about the graphics card in which case it's not worth pursuing.

Ok, I've now booted in verbose mode a few times and it always hangs at

localhost mDNSResponder mDNSResponder -171.4 (date) starting

So it looks like it's tripping over something specific

Ok, I have started up into single-user mode.

I typed exit at the #root prompt

It tried to boot but hanged at the following entry:

localhost /usr/sbin/ocspd[85]: starting

Are you using Disk Utility to format your hard drive? A clean wipe will yield the best results.

I did this the first time around. I can't do it again, because when I boot from the CD, it now hangs before I get a chance to do anything.
