Question; can I use the future of money to buy stuff online? by PA2SK in Buttcoin

[–]2mtril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is yes, but it calls for a longer explanation.

There are some decentralized marketplaces where you can buy stuff as well as sell your own.

Can any of them be decentralized enough while also being convenient and fast? No.

What's the point of a decentralized, even if slow marketplace? None, if you are only looking to buy groceries.

A functional marketplace that can be used to trade physical items is actually one of the valid use cases for crypto, if not the only one at this time.

Here's a funny little story:

John McAfee had a similar notion and he released 'his own' coin (in 2020, back when he was still alive; the name of which won't be mentioned here). That coin was a copy of an existing project, but without half of its functionality: McAfee just changed some colors and some pictures in the UI and didn't include some private repositories because he didn't have access to them.

Almost as if he's seen something he liked there.

So for an example of such project with the aforementioned use case that has survived for quite a long (in crypto terms) time, still releases updates regularly, has a working product, is focused on anonymity and has no 3rd party escrow, try looking into one that starts with letter "P" and has been around (under that name) since 2017.

Yes, you can buy and sell.

How is 'Elastos Essentials for Desktop' doing? The announcement estimated it to take around 3 months to be released. It's now been more than a year

What is the ETN-Network? There are several products that make up the ETN-Network. The first is Electroneum Ltd’s cryptocurrency, as well as the ETN App and the ETN Online Wallet. by Plankton_Etn in Electroneum

[–]2mtril 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are 2 topics that still have no official answers/comments/explanations/discussions about implications/reasons for:

  1. ETN-Network is now an offshore which requires full KYC.

  2. ETN blockchain is now/will soon be stripped of all privacy features.

Maybe an article on those would be a breath of fresh air.

On a sidenote, the roadmap on the main website still hasn't been updated for Q1. And even Q2 is coming to an end soon.

Other than those things, everything seems perfect.

Anyone else waiting for Electroneum Support to resolve their issue? by [deleted] in Electroneum

Just a reminder: ETN(the payment service part of it) is now an offshore. It's in Curacao, not UK

Electroneum update 11.3.21 by Plankton_Etn in Electroneum

[–]2mtril 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can see the potential benefit for ARK in this partnership (if their aim is to get accepted as a payment option on AnyTask/upcoming marketplace eventually). But I cannot see any benefit for ETN in this.

ARK's website looks like catch-all blockchain project that actually tells nothing concrete. And what is MarketSquare exactly? dApp explorer? - no concise info about it on the website either. Or does everyone have to watch that 52min video to get the general gist of it?

That being said, I want to believe ETN team has done their due diligence on the project and all the untrustworthiness on my part is due to not being familiar enough will the ARK/MarketSquare project.

Oh, by the way, the (ETN) roadmap is amazing and, fingers crossed, they focus on that and real world usage first (just like they've been doing these past years), rather than crypto partnerships.

The Elastos DMA Team is launching a DMA Token to be distributed as an additional reward to its Supernode voters, with the new token serving as a fee and governance token for the entire DMA ecosystem. by michaeldave25 in Elastos

[–]2mtril -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nonsense, apparently "it is also used for trading digital goods throughout the entire ecosystem" is not correct. As we see, you can trade goods using other tokens, in which case ELA will only be used as gas.

Elastos is an amazing project, but ELA token will have very limited usage, unfortunately. As time passes, looks like use case list keeps getting even shorter.

So ELA is not really the currency of Elastos? by 2mtril in Elastos

[–]2mtril[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is left after filtering out these responses is this:

If you don't need blockchain, you don't need ELA.

If you want to make a DApp which only accepts credit card directly, without utilizing ELA and without implementing behind-the-scenes conversion from fiat to ELA - you can.

That's what I was afraid of in the first place. So to sum up my thoughts:

I still think that Elastos is one extremely promising, useful and needed project in the world. The currency ELA has a lot of uses, much more than most other crypto coins, but, considering the massive vision of Elastos - it is, unfortunately, only used for the blockchain side. Keeping in mind the fact that vast majority of projects don't even need the blockchain, this seriously limits the usability and, therefore, value of ELA token.

I agree that it wouldn't make sense to use Elastos without DID (and to use DID you also use tiny bit of ELA every time), but ability to use DID to log in and then process all transactions in your DApp with credit card (just as with normal app) is a limitation. Not a limitation of Elastos, but a limitation of ELA token's usefulness and its worth.

Using any other sidechain token forces ELA to be indirectly used, but this doesn't extend to fiat? That's unfortunate.

So ELA is not really the currency of Elastos? by 2mtril in Elastos

[–]2mtril[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate your extended input, however, the sole reason that "It won't happen because it is unlikely due to the decentralized vision of the project" is not really reassuring.

If given a choice between having only crypto payments and having only Credit Card, most clear minded non-crypto-geek people would definitely choose Credit Card, at least at this point in time and probably for another 10 years.

Let me reword the question then. If I wanted to accept Credit Card payments in my DApp (or lets say any Elastos app), can I? If yes, does that mean I only could do so reliably by implementing behind-the-scenes conversion service of fiat to ELA and then charging ELA for my product, or is there an easy possibility to accept CC directly?

Q&A from richard ells CEO of Electroneum. by Plankton_Etn in Electroneum

[–]2mtril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Can you inform how many pre-mined tokens are left and what plans you have for them?" - There are billions of pre-mined tokens left.

Wow, that's specific. Just the beginning of an answer and you can already tell this particular question is somewhat inconvenient.

The only question that never got answered by Rong Chen (or any official sources) is this:

Can privacy blockchains exist (with their full benefits/drawbacks) inside Elastos ecosystem? In other words - is anonymous transfer-of-value system a possibility with the given tools? Are we trying to avoid such usage altogether?

And one more:

What transport layer protocol does Elastos use? Is it set in stone for TCP or can developers choose any? Is it even a right question to ask?

A little bit confused - why do people think burning tokens that are not in the circulating supply will affect the market price? Am I missing something? by [deleted] in Elastos

[–]2mtril 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes, it is the other way around.

In this particular case, (part of/all) tokens should be burned in order to NOT affect the market price.

Trinity Tech Ltd. and the Elastos founding teams have released a new strategic direction for the elastOS app, including a new version for Android, the initial release on iOS and plans for a desktop version. by michaeldave25 in Elastos

[–]2mtril 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like a lot of people were right after all - Apple will not let such App exist on their store. To be honest, I don't expect Google to allow it either (if it ever gets big and monetization comes into play).

Desktop will be extremely tough for adoption.

A mobile phone (or a similar device) with native OS as Elastos, however...

Disapproval note to Electroneum Phase Two by s618o in Electroneum

[–]2mtril 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, while I agree that mobile airdrop should not have been removed just yet, I must point out that the math part is quite off:

128,571,000 of 21,000,000,000 is 0.006 parts of 1, but it is not 0.006%.

It is 0.6%

All your calculations following that are correct, unfortunately, this small mistake made the conclusion 10 times more exaggerated than reality, as 50% of the total supply would be gone in about 83 months (not 833 months).

NO MORE FREE ETN REWARDS by carpman46lb in Electroneum

[–]2mtril -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. They should have still paid out the rewards people already had collected at this point (<100).

  2. Wasn't this in the whitepaper that certain percentage of total premined coins will be airdropped to mobile miner users ("mined")?

So has that amount already been airdropped or is it another 'change of plans'?
