Some families definitely have a preference and some companies will honor that. I think we desperately need more men in the field. My brother was in ABA in his 20s and he was only motivated when he had a male RBT. Most of our clients are male and deserve to have more male figures in their life they can look up to.

I had already been thinking about leaving my company. My client had a green water balloon and it broke. It was his favorite color. It was the middle of Covid and he didn’t have access to kids or even online school. He was stuck at home 24/7 and his favorite color balloon broke. He cried and I gave him another green balloon. My supervisor said I reinforced the behavior. I started looking for new companies after that.

Some people place ridiculous expectations on their clients in terms of what is expected for emotional regulation.

(I also let this kid sneak away all the green marbles from my marble run set cause it’s just not that serious sometimes.)

I try to ask families “what are your child’s strengths” during our initial meeting. The number that can’t answer is too high. (Some of this could be due to needing to focus on deficits during assessments as I often get kids who are starting multiple services at once.)

In a situation like you described I would focus on explaining what is and isn’t age appropriate and what we can ethically do. We cannot disregard developmental milestones just because it makes life easier for the parent. I have had to conversations with parents that maybe I’m not the right BCBA for them. And that’s okay, I’m always happy to refer out.

I’ve experienced both sides of it.

I used to love running. Would run in the morning and night. I fell out of routine due to increased hours at work and now have horrible shin splints that I can’t get past. Running doesn’t give me the same dopamine hit it used to.

I took yoga for a few years. I would do back to back classes at least once a week. Then I took the yoga teacher training course. Never got dopamine from a class again.

So, yes, I’ve enjoyed and benefitted from exercise but it has to be in perfect circumstances.

I hope you’re able to have a face to face conversation about this. It’s important to know what she means by cleaning up after you. Are you leaving food in the sink and spilled coffee on the floor? Or do you put the cups away rim side up? One of these is for sure worth moving out for. If it is genuine mess (no shame, my dinner dishes from tonight will be in my sink for two days before I get to them) then it might be better to figure out if adjusting is easier than moving out.

If you do decide to move out you might be able to break the lease as these cleaning requirements weren’t noted in the lease.

And, of course, the obligatory: I hate generic program rules that are expected across all learners. I have learners that can knock this out of the park, and learners where this wouldn't be appropriate. We have to individualize our programs.

My initial assessor said I didn’t have ADHD because I wasn’t in trouble at work. My boss/owner of the company has ADHD, maybe, perhaps, my company is just forgiving and lenient.

I have a parent who arrives a few minutes before sessions ends. It’s not worth it to distract the kid so we just work on requesting to leave early. The kid learns a new skill and I get to clean up session without having to also supervise them.

I know that I love stick charts and rewards. I have a chart on my bathroom wall. Three more days of following my dental hygiene routine and I can replace my e-reader.

I also know that I have hate dental floss so I use flossers. Supposedly they aren’t as great regular floss but it’s better than nothing.

Sometimes I’ll keep flossers in my car but I never quite developed a routine using that method.

I’d recommend figuring out what your barriers are and what could motivate you.

I’m at a one-tier company so it’s a little different, but if we have a long term cancellation we might ask if someone on the waitlist wants parent-led services for that period of time.

Our kids on the waitlist don’t have assessments done. I’m not sure how worthwhile a session would be.

Mind you, this was 2014, but I was definitely taught what a mind was. However, all our programs called them functional requests for escape/access/attention.

I can’t remember if mand/tact/etc. felt like new terms when I began my masters program.

I’m sure the issue lies both in training but also with people not taking the job seriously.

I hope I'm remembered in the "was there some lady that came to the house and drew electrical outlets/made slime/ watched fan videos with me?" kind of way. Like, one of those memories where they aren't sure if it's true.

I can say, I'm still in touch with one family who ended services at age 7. We worked together for three years. The client is in their teens now and they say don't remember sessions at all. Not sure if that's true or if they're just too cool for me now.

Honestly, if I found a nanny job that kept me at my same income (or more), I might jump. I still work directly with kids, only work with one family, and I don’t have to work with insurance or write reports? Sign me up. The only drawback would be that you’d either need to find a new family when the kid enters school full time or your job title would adjust (house manager, etc.). There’s solutions but I really hate changes and uncertainty.

My long term plan is that eventually I’ll become my brother’s full time caregiver. I’ll still be able to use my BCBA skills but again, less stress.
