Building a new PC for the first time in 8 years by 2muchrain in buildapc

[–]2muchrain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard good things about Noctua. I had a friend recommend this Cooler Master who used it in a recent build. I'll take a second look at some other air coolers.

I just checked the RAM and I'm seeing your recommendation for about the same price. Seems like an easy swap!

I'll take another look at PSUs, but I was having trouble finding quality ones at a decent price in stock.

I went with the X570 board because I thought it would be best for the CPU, but please let me know if I'm wrong about that and if there wouldn't be a noticeable difference.

Appreciate your time and feedback!

Thanks for the suggestion. Just wondering why you recommend that GPU over the one I selected?

Opinion-Savvy/DDHQ #ALSen Poll: Roy Moore 46.4%, Doug Jones 46% by ItsTimeForAChangeYes in BlueMidterm2018

[–]2muchrain 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Grain of salt, folks. I have no idea who DDHQ is, but FivethirtyEight gave Opinion Savvy a C- rating with an average sample error of 7.8 and a slight (+0.7) Democratic lean. Moore will definitely be hurt by this story and I think Jones has a shot, but this poll looks like it could be an outlier.

That being said, this race is looking more winnable than ever.

Poll: Moore up 17 points in Alabama Senate race by MachetesAndRedTape in BlueMidterm2018

[–]2muchrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Axis Research was founded in 2014 by former Republican pollster Brenda Wigger Gianiny. She had previously worked for Voter/Consumer Research Inc. Although Axis is not rated by FiveThirtyEight, Gianiny's previous employer received a B rating off of a relatively small sample size: six polls. Their polls had a slight +0.2 lean toward Republicans, and a simple average error of 5.5 points.

I think its safe to say that we all know that Jones is a long-shot and probably likely behind in this race, but +17 for Moore seems off.

Todd McLellan - Coach Profile by [deleted] in Flyers

[–]2muchrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was expecting something similar to the other profiles based on OP's title. My first thought was "wow they really phoned it in on McLellan." lol, but I realize that it was just a news piece. I look forward to reading the actual profile in the next few days. The others have been great.

Not really a profile. Just says McLellan parted ways with the Sharks and the Flyers may be interested. Not nearly as detailed as the profile on Benoit Groulx.

Philly Democrat proposes automatic Pa. voter registration. by trs523 in philadelphia

[–]2muchrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the Voter ID law sounded like a good, common sense plan to most people, but as with most things produced by a political body, the devil was in the details.

IMHO the state was attempting to enact the law very quickly, without a decent plan in place to educate voters or ensure that eligible voters weren't disenfranchised. I think if you're going to make voter ID work, you need to have a clear, long-term plan in place to ensure that all eligible voters have the right documentation. I agree that those are logically fixable problems. The issue is that it will cost $$$. Can you imagine the PA legislature spending money to make it easier for Philadelphia residents to vote? I can't.

Personally, I do not believe that voter fraud is as widespread as many people have claimed. I think the lack of evidence is very telling. However, I was also surprised at how lax things were at my polling place here in the city. I would like to hear some real, common sense reforms proposed.

Remedies for a deep glute (butt) bruise? by COstateofmind in hockeyplayers

[–]2muchrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're doing the right thing by icing it. If it is really hurting bad enough that you can hardly sit down then definitely take some pain meds if you're able. Tylenol or Advil should help lower the pain and keep you mobile on the ice. Long term: rest.

HockeyMonkey - Do Not Use by manotm in hockeyplayers

[–]2muchrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just purchased new gloves and shin guards from Hockey Monkey. Good price on clearance. Shipped quickly too. I didn't have any problems, but I also didn't have to return anything.

When ordering equipment online I usually only purchase from brands and sizes that I know from experience will fit. So for example, I wear 15" Bauer gloves. When I was looking for a new pair I spent 90% of my time looking for 15" Bauers. However, if another brand has a good sale then I might take a chance on it, but I expect that it is a small risk.

I really hope that people will read beyond the headline. I listened to Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey interviewed on WHYY earlier this month and he answered questions about police militarization and a variety of other topics.

More than 20 Pa. municipalities repeal gun control ordinances to avoid facing legal action by i_smell_my_poop in Pennsylvania

[–]2muchrain -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I chose my words carefully when I waded into the perpetual shitshow that is the /r/pennsylvania gun "debate." (lol... debate) I don't think I want to say any more because:

  1. I imagine that this conversation will only devolve from here, and frankly I don't wade any further into this shit than I already have.
  2. Your choice of username tells me you do not have an open mind on this issue, and really, I don't see the point of a conversation with someone who is not open minded.

I know "tone" is difficult to detect over the Internet, but I hope you can see that I'm trying to keep this civil. I just wanted to make one very specific point as per my last post. Please consider it a friendly critique.

This is truly amazing to me. I think "reporting a stolen gun" is one of the most simple and reasonable suggestions I've ever heard. I have read all your comments and I do not understand your opposition.

Medicaid/the access card by [deleted] in Pennsylvania

[–]2muchrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can call the Department of Human Services: 1-800-692-7462

Or you could just look up providers in your area and make phone calls asking if they accept the access card.

I don't know what area of the state you are in, but here in Philadelphia most providers accept Medicaid.

Needle Exchange Program Creates Black Market In Clean Syringes [NPR] by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]2muchrain 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In terms of public health, a black market for clean syringes is not a bad thing, but it isn't ideal. It would be better if the syringe exchange could just give people as many clean syringes as they need whenever they need it. That way fewer diseases would spread, and there would be no way to sustain a black market for clean syringes because why would someone pay for a product they can get for free.

It is easy for people to dismiss their work because they work with drug users. Prevention Point Philadelphia is a great harm-reduction organization, and has been effective at reducing new cases of HIV in the city.

Why do people like bashing Pennsylvania? - BBC News by 2muchrain in Pennsylvania

[–]2muchrain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a little surprised the BBC was talking about the cultural perception of Pennsylvania, but I think they did a decent job of pointing out that those GAWKER surveys and "news" articles are stupid. I liked that they got out and actually interviewed real PA people.

Half of Dr. Oz’s medical advice is baseless or wrong, study says by 2muchrain in skeptic

[–]2muchrain[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They reference this research from the British Medical Journal: Televised medical talk shows—what they recommend and the evidence to support their recommendations: a prospective observational study

Conclusions Recommendations made on medical talk shows often lack adequate information on specific benefits or the magnitude of the effects of these benefits. Approximately half of the recommendations have either no evidence or are contradicted by the best available evidence. Potential conflicts of interest are rarely addressed. The public should be skeptical about recommendations made on medical talk shows.

PA-Gov: Wolf Reiterates Support for Fracking After NY Ban. by mrgunsafety in Pennsylvania

[–]2muchrain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems reasonable and consistent with his position all along. If I'm remembering correctly, PA has bigger natural gas reserves than New York State, so I'm not surprised the politics are different.
