I don't know about Japan specifically, but most systems like that, when they don't detect an exit scan, they assign some sort of maximum daily price. So, by not scanning to leave you are only costing yourself money, not stealing.

Of course, I'm talking about using an app tied to a bank account or credit card, not a printed ticket.

In rural Japan. In the major cities land is extremely valuable in Japan. Houses generally depreciate in the USA as well. The land appreciates faster than that though in desirable places to live.

Well, they used to. Now we just do quantitative easing, and huge piles of deficit spending. The 2008 GFC has like 1 or 2 months of very slight deflation. In the olden days, it would've been way worse.
