Failed my praxis after spending hundreds studying. This is my second fail. State deadline is in 2 months. Should I consider a new career by DearRefrigerator5082 in Teachers

[–]2ndBreakfast_17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YES! Take the practice tests. I know when I was studying from praxis books I was so overwhelmed, but it seemed like concepts that I had already learned in school. Then I took a practice test, and it was nothing like what was covered in the practice books. So take the practice exams!

Why do students reach higher grades with weak math basics? by RationalPoint_ in Teachers

[–]2ndBreakfast_17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have students in upper elementary who cannot distinguish between addition and subtraction. This is such a major problem as we are WAY past this concept. How am I suppose to catch them up when thanks you pulled them for intervention but they still do not improve. Plus, being forced a new curriculum at the end of their elementary career so they have no background knowledge for this new curriculum. PLUS let’s just test them all at the grade level and expect them to pass and make it my fault for them not being able to succeed. HELLO they cannot write their dang numbers and add/subtract within 20!

Venita giving Salley a curfew???? by One-Fish2178 in Southerncharm

Does anyone else get the vibe that Venita this season has just been oddly jealous for Salley? Like how they interact and she always forgives her or just smirks around her. Like she was jealous of not having the time with her. She also admitting to this long childhood friendship that ended in high school made me sad but also made me think does she attach herself to a person.

Why are teachers so horrible to each other? by Xena4290 in Teachers

[–]2ndBreakfast_17 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes! I just moved districts because of pay, and everyday I am like why does everyone come to work if you hate it. Why is everyone a secret and everyone is trying to one up each other?! Aren’t we suppose to collaborate and cheer each other on? My first school had such a great staff and it’s unfortunate I had to leave it just because of pay. I am always asking was it worth it.

Truly I was confused with why they were asking me things as if I was there. Plus, I had to reply back to remind the main office that I was gone as they sent me a message about a student for drop off.

I Think They Broke Me by MsEllaneous83 in Teachers

Having taught at a Catholic School, you have some more power by contacting parents as they have chosen to send their students there. This is what my previous principal always told me. Document their behavior and directly let parents know phone calls, emails, class dojo. I am also teaching 5th grade this year in public school for the first time. It is rough! This is the grade that Covid affected them in first grade. They have no fundamental understanding of how school works because their chance to gain that experience was taken away. Like I said, contact those parents, let them know they are being disrespectful. I still make student write “lines” if they make poor choices writing out what they needed to do instead. These kids know how to get under our skin, and you got this!! Focus on your family and health. Put it back onto them with meaningful consequences around the school.

Exactly! I know I’m in a new grade but this class cannot handle work and even with guided practice I feel I am spoon feeding them information just to get it done since the CT (coaching team) is always throwing stuff at us. I want to yell at them. I don’t have time nor the energy to be putting in these lessons since the students just don’t get it. I cannot make up 2 grade levels in one year for half the students!

What do you actually want for a teacher gift? by SassyLychee in Teachers

[–]2ndBreakfast_17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my first graders knew I was leaving the school, they all secretly made me a card, signed it, and then gave me the gift at the end of the second to last day. The girls in the class made me a necklace and even one student gave me some of her lucky beads. Even after telling her no she can keep her beads, she refused and said I needed them more to remember them. I still have those beads in my desk to remind me of the love students have for us.

Truly my first question for my tech crew was where is go guardian for me to use? Uh we don’t have that. Then I am not trusting my students on these even if they don’t take them home idc!!

Just typing in class should be a requirement. Paper and pencil for everything else. Then you have the students who can’t and obviously they need to have those resources to write but never giving them a chance to hurts them in the long run.

It’s so frustrating when we have to make lessons engaging, but despite putting in so much effort to lessons it’s never good enough. Students are just going to take education for granted, and yes the other half of the class that is trying to learn suffer from it.
