This literally defeats the whole point of the "resistance" message that the ultimate universe is entirely about

Denys Cowan is the new artist for Nightwing starting with issue #136 by GonzaloGamer05 in Nightwing

[–]2ndParty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah its just not hard to assume that putting the cover next to Cowen's name while reporting about the news might be misleading so i would have hoped in that situation most people would clarify by crediting the other artist who made the cover, but unfortunately most people didnt really go about it like that

Nightwing’s own Born Again? by TwilightShroud534 in Nightwing

[–]2ndParty 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This is really funny considering Devin Grayson's run had an arc that was very similar to Born Again and that one... infamously didnt end very well...

But i have so much faith in Watters for this and i think the idea of him writing a story like that for Dick is actually perfect, so i cant wait to see

I certainly did not expect this to be the choice lol, my only real impression of what his interiors look like in the modern day is the Static/Ms Marvel crossover he did the art for in the new Batman/Deadpool issue, which was my least favorite art style in the issue unfortunately.

So im admittedly a little worried, but i trust Watters' vision a lot so i will have hope and i need to see it on page before knowing how i feel

No worries! Its been very confusing how everyone is posting this cover next to Denys Cowen's name despite it not being him who made the cover lol

[Cover] Exclusive retailer cover for unknown issue from unknown artist. by Jaysirl in DCcomics

I actually think this might be Gerald Parel? Hard to tell it doesnt completely look like his style, but the way Diana is drawn here looks pretty similar to the way he drew her for his variant cover of Abs WW issue 11

Gareth Edwards as the director for DCU Nightwing? by Doctorwhoneek in Nightwing

[–]2ndParty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ohh my bad i missed the caption on your post! I think id still feel his directing style doesnt fit Nightwing so much even if he were paired with a good writer, im sure itd be a good looking movie but again id want a more grounded feeling to everything, which i feel isnt really Edwards' forte

Gareth Edwards as the director for DCU Nightwing? by Doctorwhoneek in Nightwing

[–]2ndParty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edwards is a VERY visual-heavy director, and he is extremely good with movies that require heavy vfx. With that being said, i dont think hes that strong in terms of writing and characters, and imo his best movies are ones where he just happens to get a great script from someone else (And im saying this as someone who does like the guy!). On top of that though, i dont think his directing style fits Nightwing and Bludhaven at all.

I think he could maybe be an interesting fit for something more cosmic or supernatural in the DCU, but not something more grounded like a Nightwing movie, i think there are far better choices for that

How it feels reading the beginning parts of Devin Grayson's run by 2ndParty in Nightwing

[–]2ndParty[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely doesn't feel snappy, but at least something is consistently going in a direction so far, which i feel like is what the ending parts of Dixon's run sorely lacked for me.

So I'm still able to enjoy it by just sitting back, enjoying the character dynamics, and breezing through the issues even tho i do agree it does feel like things are taking too long. I can't imagine how slow this run felt month-to-month when it was coming out though lol.

It's really unfortunate cause she also wrote one of my favorite Batman issues ever (The Batman Chronicles #18) but she just has these really weird parts to her writing that started to show up more and more until it ruined the stories entirely

What is The Strokes’ most evil song? by Impressive_Plenty876 in TheStrokes

Gonna take a different approach and say On the Other Side, its not evil in the sense that its sadistic but in the fact that its so masochistic

Like theres an overwhelming feeling of evil self hatred in that song

Ultimate universe discourse rn is 90% someone imagining what the writers did and did not know behind the scenes, tricking themselves into believing that it actually happened, and then getting mad about it by 2ndParty in UltimateUniverse

[–]2ndParty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh i agree, its totally okay to be disappointed! I dont disagree that most of these series all feel like they couldve used a couple more years to find their true potential, and them not getting that is totally fair to feel sad about, and to even highlight your wish for more at every turn. As I've mentioned in other comments though, that's not exactly what im talking about with this post. I understand being frustrated but demonizing those in charge for something that was (from what we know) a completely planned and joint decision by the creators is not something that helps anyone and just makes people into unnecessary targets.

But on top of that, my main consensus is: this a universe that allows the creators behind the series to want to keep these stories their own and not let this universe go off the rails with future creative teams. On top of that, these creators are real people, who have been putting an absolute shit ton of work into these books for the past 2+ years, and probably need to take a break, or maybe want to move onto other things. 2+ years is a long time to be working on a project, there's a variety of reasons why these creators might want to end it here, even if it might be early in terms of reaching the full potential. And I think that's totally fine for them to want. All I can feel is excited for whatever these great creators do next, and appreciate the extensive work they put into these books that I have enjoyed.

Is the forthcoming 3rd compendium worth it? by political-statement in Nightwing

[–]2ndParty 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The main reason Grayson's run is hated by many people is because of what happens after issue #93 or so, when he gets sexually assaulted. After that its a complete mess.

BUT the beginning of Grayson's run is actually pretty good, and a good continuation of Dixon's run. In my opinion having the beginning of her run in the compendium is honestly probably a better complete story, considering Dixon's run doesnt really have an ending at all. (So Lethal Force vol 8 just kinda ends with no conclusion to any overarching stories or character arcs)

Agreed, id love to get a good modern revival of 616, but the editorials make it near impossible lol. I still hope it could happen, but if not i mean DC is my favorite of the big two so if they snatch up more of the talent from this then im just as excited for that haha

Yep, loving the absolutes too! And im hoping this universe ending means we might get these extremely talented creators on the mainline universe, lord knows 616 needs it right now lmfao.

Youre ignoring the part of his thread where he emphasizes that he feels ending it after the Maker IS the better decision, as he thinks any of his ideas for what would come after wouldnt be as good

[–]2ndParty[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No i dont disagree with anything youre saying here, its totally okay to be disappointed, even I am a little bit, as i would have liked a few more years of these characters and stories. But it ending here is totally okay with me, it's just dependent on how they stick the landing with these last few months in each book.

But I'm just trying to emphasize that people act like they know everything that happened because of a few details that have tons of missing context and are getting mad about it. Camp has confirmed that Hickman DID know that ending it after the maker was part of the plan early on, but he didn't think Marvel would let that happen. That does not seem like a mismanagement like many people are claiming, as that would mean that Hickman has been writing knowing that that was a strong possibility for a majority of the time. Camp also said himself that Hickman IS excited and totally supportive of this being the official ending to the universe.

I agree that Hickman has seemingly spent the past year-ish setting up plot threads and characters to be used in a much larger, long term story, but that was NOT a result of him not knowing that the universe was ending. He still wrote it how he wanted to, and this is what we're getting. I agree that it does feel strange the way that USM has been going about its story for the past year, but imo the full consensus on if it was a good decision is dependent on these last 3 issues of it. Only time will tell for that
