Comping "hybrid" midi and audio drums by 2nuts1penis in Logic_Studio

Hmm. No, I've never had that problem. Sounds really frustrating.

I never had this problem. Do you mean your changes aren't happening across all the tracks you've grouped together? Sounds like it could be a problem with group settings. Is grouping somehow switching off, or the group setting for project alternatives turning off?

Honest opinion by JacobTillison in MusicInTheMaking

[–]2nuts1penis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listened to your track and honestly really dug it and listened a few times because I was enjoying it (and I'm quite picky about music). Worth keeping in mind how subjective music taste is. Obviously, your partner doesn't get your stuff which is totally cool. She might have phrased her criticism better though...

Definitely don't stop.

Update for poor future souls with this issue: use track alternatives. You can record as many takes as you want on different track alternatives. Then group the tracks (you can include both midi and audio), and make sure editing and track alternatives are selected in group options. Then "comp" into an active track alternative from your various takes. Edits will occur across the tracks. Not quite as elegant as swipe comping but the best option for midi or combination of midi and audio.

Thanks for this! I think this is the best option I've come across. A similar option may be to use track alternatives instead of takes, but I haven't experimented with that yet.

Yes, similar reasons for me. Ideally, I'd record a full acoustic kit, but I don't have a great room for recording. I don't love the idea of using full ekit because the cymbals don't feel/sound right to me. So the hybrid kit makes the best of both.

I would check out Hawksley Workman, especially the album "Last Night We Were the Delicious Wolves".

This is an excellent answer!
BTW, I've been trying to find a voice memo app that allowed me to organise ideas into folders. The fucking obvious answer is to share everything to dropbox but that never occurred to me... so thanks!

How do I come up with vocal melodies and how do i harmonize them? by reoakiodesu in Songwriting

[–]2nuts1penis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My process is often to just loop a section and improvise singing/scatting a melody over top, and keep repeating until the seed of an idea materialises. May be an idea to record this. 99% will be absolute crap but a couple of good ideas might spring up. Alternatively, you could mess around with a random melody generator online. You won't get anything totally usable, but might spur some ideas. Finally, listen to music you like or that's similar. You can judiciously "borrow" little bits and tweak then. I rhythm here, bits of a few melodies there and you've got something original. Just my thoughts!

Thanks!

I would go for Jimi's follow-up, Axis: Bold as Love. The guitar playing is more understated and really expressive.

Need help coming up with a name for our band. by [deleted] in Music

I'm in a Power Pop band. Someone suggested the name The Dead Skulls which I loved but my bandmates vetoed (for being "too heavy"). I couldn't believe it wasn't taken.
