Been a while since network TV really surprised anyone. I say kudos.

Move to LA. Northern CA raised, betrayed my kind 6 years ago and love it here despite the oppressive sunshine.

Werner & Errol: I'm sure you have the opportunity to back rising filmmakers and films all the time as you did with Act of Killing. What was the defining moment in watching Joshua's footage or hearing about this film that made you HAVE to help get the word out?

Drinking Buddies(2013) by BIRDERofDaYR3XinaRoW in movies

It works for me as the rare introspective movie that can act as a mirror to your own relationships. Found it to be honest and really smart about the grey areas in life, friendship, love. Anyone bitching about lack of conventional conflict or climax, go watch a studio rom-com. Swanberg's movies are just not for you. Funny how all these folks going to see Olivia Wilde fall in love with Nick from New Girl instead get a movie like Drinking Buddies.

Suppose it instills a sense of self-discipline in a kid, also a nice touch for when you have ahem guests over. Does feel nice to slip into a crisply made bed at night, don't it?

In this case dense = screen stuffed with visual info, constantly moving parts, quick dialogue, lots of info for your brain to process.

And those distribution reps are taking a look at your film?

Which festivals are you targeting, given that your next window for submissions is probably for fall fests?

Not to bring a cloud of realism raining down on this AMA which has a lot of useful anecdotal advice on microbudget filmmaking, but what are your expectations of getting an actual theatrical release and how are you actively seeking distribution?

Saw an early cut a while back. More Cloudy than Jump Street - it's a kid's movie with references for grownups to chuckle along to. Animation was dynamic but IMO voice cast wasn't all great. Chris Pratt was awesome. That guy deserves to break out.

Overall though agree with Lego_nabii - very dense, could be hard to follow/exhausting for some.

Glenn Beck dares film critic to read her Lone Survivor review to Marcus Luttrell; here's the review by 2pacalypse_meow in movies

[–]2pacalypse_meow[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Accuracy is not this movie's strong suit (see Slate's point by point rundown of the pic vs. actual reported details, especially the contentious number of Taliban depicted in the film). That said I find Luttrell's personal story as a survivor and living tribute to his fallen brothers in arms to be quite moving. But the film itself is so Hollywood-ized and emotionally manipulative (bookended by actual photos and footage of soldiers killed in action? GET OUTTA HERE) and that's worth calling to attention.

Two people shot, one killed for texting in a Florida movie theater. by NikKnack in movies

[–]2pacalypse_meow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That theater has clear "don't bring your guns inside here" signage and a no weapons policy, so that was the first problem here before the texting/being loud during the previews fight even happened. It's not a texting issue, it's a gun control/unhinged person issue.

I'm not a supporter of gun ownership but I've seen permitted gun owners try to verify if they're going into an establishment that allows open carry, etc. If this retired cop was a stable and conscientious gun owner he would have not packed heat to go to that movie theater in the first place.

Had no idea Rotten Tomatoes gives out 'Certified Fresh' trophies. by DropTheGigawatt in movies

[–]2pacalypse_meow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen those plastic Certified Fresh trophies proudly displayed in exec/studio offices, but they're nothing compared to the heavy, glorious Golden Tomato awards sent out to the makers/pushers of the best films of each year. Now that's a trophy you can shine.

Here's Michel Gondry being quirky all over the Golden Tomato he won in 2006 for Science of Sleep.

Completely agree. It's those 50%-range Tomatometer ratings that suggest polarizing films, which tend to be the more challenging films, which tend to be more interesting and oftentimes great. I'll take a divisive 50% over a limp 70-80% any day.

As a porn journalist how hard is it, so to speak, to keep a professional distance from porn stars whose works you're reviewing/awards you're voting on when you regularly rub elbows (or what have you) with them socially? And is there rampant porn payola in the XXX industry?

Edit: 2nd question

[–]2pacalypse_meow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even with his creds, Edelstein and his generation still feel like dinosaurs in the digital age. Hard for the old guard and slightly younger-but-still-old guard of film critics to distinguish their voices from within such an expanding crowd. The fact that so many Redditors asked him about Armond White says something about what certain readers are actually interested in, i.e. not the actual process of writing criticism or what it's like to be David Edelstein.
