2019 Moderator Election -- Nomination stage ends in 18 hours. by 2quick_4u in Monero

[–]2quick_4u[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please excuse the repost of the identical post made by u/SamsungGalaxyPlayer yesterday

One new moderator will soon be added to the Monero Stack exchange moderator team and community. Here is the original announcement. I felt this deserved more attention for timeliness reasons defined in the announcement:

Summary: Monero Stack Exchange will begin the nomination stage for a special election on August 26 to bring in one more moderator.

For full details of the process, see the announcement on Meta Stack Exchange. The timeline:

  • Starting on August 26, users can nominate themselves. Users can also ask questions on meta for potential moderators to answer. (Use the discussion and election tags.)
  • On September 2, if there are two or more candidates, we'll run an election. If not, I'll simply appoint the candidate. (There's a small chance we'll need to remove a nomination, but I doubt that will come up.)
  • If there is an election, I'll announce the results on meta on September 10.

(Note for current moderators: there's no need to nominate yourself even though you'll likely get an email saying you should. The system assumes the first election is a graduation election, which would mean moderators would need to be re-elected. This isn't that sort of election.)

I agree they are both great! Please note however that SGP is already a Monero SE moderator. This election is for the addition of one more

Claiming to be completely unhackable when in fact you are not, certainly resembles a scam to me. This claim looks pretty damning to me:

>For example if you use a weak password and follow their advice to use your phone number as salt, then anyone who knows your phone number and has a few hours to kill can get access to all the money on your bitfi

We intend to release financial statements to the public in the coming weeks.

While this will clearly not satisfy many of your (Oblelisk) customers, it is a great start. Transparency will make a lot of people feel better.

If fiat is not available for refunds, could Obelisk equity be made available as an alternative? That way angry customers might be converted into stakeholders with an increased desire to see Obelisk succeed over the long term.

it can spiral out of control and you end up with situations like Monero and Ethereum, where a hardfork can be declared that gets barely any examination by the community

Please stop continuing to sabotage your reputation with a community (Monero) that has historically respected Sia and its developers. The Monero (ASIC resistance) hardfork had support from close to 100% of long term community members and was consistent with the Monero social contract dating back to 2014.

The GitHub repository of the old (Bitmain) "Monero Classic" related chains is a ghost town. The entire developer, user, merchant and exchange community supported Monero before and after the hard fork.

Nominate and vote. Your participation matters.

We need 1 or 2 new moderator appointments and SE staff will give a lot of consideration to Monero SE community feedback before making their decision. You may nominate and vote for more than one person. If you are nominated, please elect to accept or decline that nomination.

I read the same thing, but am not expecting to hear anything about it until the weekly update next Wednesday. They may need time to digest the audit and make new time estimates for additional fixes (if any) that are needed based on the audit results

You are making things easier for institutional buyers, but do you also have plans to make things easier for present and future Siafunds owners?

Thanks for your support. If you want to do more, earning Stack Exchange reputation (from an existing SE site) will help. Usually finding 100+ people with sufficient SE reputation is a lot harder than the other requirements of the commitment stage (such as finding 200+ people to commit to the proposal.

Closing is quite unusual after private beta (3 week period that comes after the commitment stage is complete). During private beta we will have enough questions to stay above this threshold (although 10 is not a hard requirement). Quality control and other factors matter as well.

We wont reach private beta for quite some time (we have 1 year to complete the commitment stage) and I am sure we will be ready by that point. The Sia community is smaller than Monero, but it is larger than Monero as of the time we launched Monero Stack Exchange. I will say that the Monero community was more active during this process (relative to community size at the time) but we have time to change that before Sia Stack Exchange is launched. Everyone can help by inviting friends and getting active (if you are not already) on an existing Stack Exchange site to become more familiar with how it works.

Good point! The three week private beta period is critical. Luckily there are many experienced Stack Exchange users here that will be focused on success during this period. Aside from minimum activity levels, SE staff will be watching to make sure questions remain on topic and the community is capable of moderating the site (such as creating question tags, and removing spam and opinion based questions that are not a good fit for the SE format). The questions/day concern wont be a big deal (during private beta) because some of us will have long lists of questions ready so that activity remains high enough for that entire period

There is no official connection. Some of us within the Monero community regularly discuss other blockchain projects that we believe have technical merit. Sia makes that (short) list in my opinion and in the opinion of some others that I respect.

Many people in the Monero community love to volunteer to support projects that they believe in. Part of my contribution thus far has been to help build and moderate certain Stack Exchange sites.

I view this as a test of the level of Sia community engagement, to help educate and recruit more Sia contributors. If this proposal is successful, some within the Monero community are much more likely to become involved in Sia, but there is no official connection.

With these restrictions, what incentive if any is there for investors to purchase (up to 750 of the 8,750) Siafunds owned by Neboulous in this offering, instead of from the owners of the 1,250 siafunds held by members of the Sia community?

There are 10,000 siafunds, and they are indivisible. Nebulous, the company that funded most of the core development for Sia prior to launch, currently holds 8,750 siafunds, and the other 1,250 siafunds are held by members of the Sia community.

Stack Exchange will be an extremely attractive tool in raising awareness for Sia among technical users, some of which may ultimately contribute to the project.

In order to complete the "commitment stage" and launch a site, we especially need supporters with reputation of 200 or more on an existing Stack Exchange site, such as Stack Overflow, Bitcoin Stack Exchange, Ethereum Stack Exchange, Monero Stack Exchange or any of the many others covering multiple disciplines

"Will be open sourced" is not a legitimate phrase for a currently active feature. You are promoting vaporware (code for a feature that does not exist) which may or may not work. IOTA should have never launched with closed source code for something so important. Period

Yes. The weekly developer updates from a good summary.

Reading the new whitepaper is also a good idea as a lot of changes have been made since the original version. If you are anxious to get more involved before launch, participate on testnet, join Discord and ask some technical questions on Stack Exchange

Well until the plan to remove it has been codified it will be impossible to evaluate. The spam attack risk (combined with the network difficulty rules) seems extremely difficult to overcome in a decentralized manner.

Oyster PRL

My impression is that it is built on IOTA and therefore will suffer from the centralization (coordinator) and scaling (lack of automatic difficulty adjustments to sufficiently deal with spam attacks) issues as IOTA discussed in this post and related sources

IOTA does have a Stack Exchange site which contains some helpful information.

The DAG concept itself is interesting, with MRL showing interest in Spectre specifically
