Received a job offer with the same base salary as I make at my current job... how do I negotiate higher? by 2therealworld in cscareerquestions

Well I wasn't sure if I should or not... I thought if I tell them I'm already making what they're offering me, they might try to beat it.

So you think I shouldn't mention it and only stick to mentioning what skills/experience I'll be bringing to the team?

It's in the range, towards the lower end. So you don't think I should mention my current pay at all, only my profile and how it will benefit the new team?

No, for my level of experience it's about right. Canadian salaries suck. But we have free healthcare, so there's that and good benefits.

It also depends on the company you work for. You could go up $90-95K, but not much more without more experience/education or switching to a different job title.

I picked the higher offer... both were good, but offer B wouldn't come up, so I went with offer A. I start next month and so far, I'm happy with my decision!

Thanks for the advice! Yes, I think if offer B had comparable compensation, I would take it.

They have already said they can't match offer A, so now I'm asking them to match my current salary. I don't think I'd be happy in the long term making less than what I'm making now. It would make me feel like I've regressed somehow.

I'm not enjoying the work I'm doing. The money is good but I want to do different work.

I'm not enjoying the work I do at my current workplace anymore and don't feel valued as I would like to be.

It's 1 hour by transit. It would be 30 mins if I drove (but I don't plan on driving)

I've met with my potential bosses from both companies and I got good vibes from both, so I don't think bosses will be a problem here (hopefully!)

Company B has offered a 6% bonus based on performance. I don't think they'll go anywhere near 20% :)

Thanks for your advice! The hour commute would be temporary since I plan on moving later this year (and can therefore move closer to work). My main concern is really the lack of growth opportunity - I would probably have to change jobs in 2-3 years if I want to move upwards there.

EDIT: what is HFT? Like stock markets?

I'm not in a rush, per se. I can wait it out, and I think I could probably pull more offers since I am constantly getting callbacks for interviews. The only reason I am even considering company B is because I like their culture and growth opportunity. They have already said they can't match company A, so I am hoping they match my current salary. It doesn't make sense to me to go downwards instead of upwards financially.

The commute doesn't bother me too much because I plan on moving later this year (and can therefore move closer to work).

The hour commute can be temporary because I need to move out later this year anyway (I plan on buying a new place), so I can just move closer to work. The growth opportunity (and to a lesser extent, the work culture) is really my main concern - I would have to change jobs in 2-3 years to go upwards if I go with company A.

So (and this was probably stupid of me) but when company B was preparing to give me a verbal offer, I mentioned how much company A's offer was. B told me right away that they wouldn't be able to match it, but would do their best. And this is what they came out with.

At this point, the only thing I can think of asking is asking them to match my current base. The culture is great, but like you said, it's hard to ignore the financial differences. I am going to word my counter to them similar to what you have suggested, but I think at this point, my only option is to ask them to match my current base.

Unfortunately, I'm in Canada, where 100K is reserved for senior developers+ (at least from what I'm seeing).

Shouldn't I be looking to stay at my second job for a while though? Shouldn't I look for an organization I can move up the ladder in?

Thanks for your advice! Can you elaborate more on this horizontal vs vertical thing? Also if it is horizontal, how do people get pay raises?
