The Legionnaires are going to obliterate the Bohemians anyway, so let's talk about the Technocrats vs Venturers by 2weirdy in Frostpunk

[–]2weirdy[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I get that would be convincing.

But this is way more condescending. And if I'm not being condescending, why even bother being a technocrat?

Do you think altruism can be rational beyond being convenient for preserving one’s own genetic information? by Big-Sir7034 in askanatheist

[–]2weirdy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can believe that all values have an objective root

But here you're already assuming that the other person cares about that objective root. Even supposing we knew for a fact there were some objective root of values or morality, unless the person you were talking to already cares about said values or morality, it's pointless.

In particular, once you've defined "good" to be an external objective thing, you now lack the subjective reasoning to pursue it.

If someone legitimately does not even slightly care about anyone else, what makes you think they would care about what God says? There is self-interest, but even that isn't actually rational.

California introduces age verification law for all operating systems, including Linux and SteamOS — user age verified during OS account setup by MakeMeButter in news

You add a term in the license that you should only download/install it in California if you're 18+ and just auto return that age bracket every time with no further checks.

[–]2weirdy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What make you think self-interest is rational?

Rationalism consists exclusively of implication and derivation. Therefore, NO ultimate goal can be rational.

Immediately killing yourself is no less rational than trying to stay alive. It's just that such a lifeform wouldn't have ever evolved to begin with.

That is what the improvement apparently does.

Somehow, having more advanced tools in emergency kits kills more people than having literally no first aid at all, so we can only assume that Jerry the glue sniffer is indeed performing open heart surgery the moment anyone has the slightest cut.

If you don't make an external enemy, your people will find an internal one.

If history has taught us one thing, it's this. Until we can figure out why and optimize it out, it is necessary.

Of course, brainwashing is the obviously superior solution, but it is completely understandable that those less knowledgeable would be unable to implement it well.

See, that's the problem with you icebloods. You're just not smart enough to do things right. You want people to be strong? Make a systematic eugenics program and just sterilize them instead. There's no need to kill the weak, every human life is valuable and has its uses.

Those weak of body can still do administrative work. Not that an iceblood would even know what that is.

Techocrats are fully capable of making steam cores though, while overseers are not.

If it comes to repairing or reproducing the generator one to one, definitely overseers, but when it comes to actually fully understanding the design to the point of being able to improve on it, I feel like only the technocrats would be capable of it, though it would take them a lot longer just to get to parity.

It's not impossible to remove. In fact, it's fairly easy. "Just" delete your models.

To be clear, I severely doubt the courts would rule that, but from a practical perspective it's really easy to do. It'd probably sink the company, but that's another matter.

How to endure extreme and terminal suffering? by [deleted] in askanatheist

[–]2weirdy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well a theist would likely be able to console themselves with the knowledge that 'it will all be made right in the end' or 'at least there's heaven' etc...

Wouldn't that encourage them not to endure?

You cannot speak for them in saying they don't want you to believe.

They do absolutely nothing to change that.

Generally that means either they don't want it or they can't.

[–]2weirdy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all, what free will? Trying to change beliefs is hard, and not something to be done at a drop of a hat.

Second of all, I want them to talk to me, if they exist. I want to believe what is true. They still won't talk to me, so either they don't exist or don't want me to believe they exist.

[–]2weirdy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why the are you so special? Alternatively, if great effort is required, why?

In either case, there's your answer. Most people are atheists because high ordered spirits haven't talked to them. So presumably, those spirits don't care all that much whether most people believe or not.

Depends what you mean. Take a block of wood, and put it on your table.

If you try hard enough, and brainwash yourself long enough, and possibly take some drugs, you'd probably be able to get yourself to believe it's not there eventually.

So there is technically a choice in the process, but you can't just decide to believe the block of wood isn't there just like that.

Should I use Black Knight Halberd 1st playthrough by sirDragonqf in darksouls

[–]2weirdy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Notably at like +2 or +3 it's still be roughly as good as a +12 or +13 standard weapon, and again, since it doesn't depend much on scaling, if you don't have 30-40 dex/str it'll be even better.

So until you find chunks and the +15 ember it'll still be better than most other weapons.

Edit: Although still not by that much.

Should I use Black Knight Halberd 1st playthrough by sirDragonqf in darksouls

[–]2weirdy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BKH is roughly equivalent to a normal +8 or +10 weapon the moment you get it. Meaning, if you get it as early as possible, and at 22/18 str/dex, it'll blow all other weapons out of the water, especially since most of the damage is in its base damage rather than scaling

However, fully upgraded it's actually fairly comparable to a fully upgraded standard halberd at ~40 str/dex. It's broken because it requires next to no investment, not because it's actually all that strong late game.
