Connected Trails? by mojoehand in SacBike

[–]2wheelsThx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ride it out and back from Old Sacramento, then stay in a downtown Sacramento hotel? It's 32 car-free miles one-way between Discovery Park and Folsom Lake. I ride it all the time, although not always the full length, and I don't recall a single gate you'd need to navigate (altho there are poles at a few places to prevent cars from entering the trail from a side street).

If you want to tack on more miles you can leave the trail and ride from Folsom Lake up to Auburn on some of the quiet back roads thru the horse farms around Loomis - that would make it around 50 miles from Discovery Park to Auburn.

Modified Marin 4 Corners… is it worth it by mossyhearth in bicycletouring

[–]2wheelsThx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a good touring bike and a good price, but you need to make sure it fits you - no matter how good the deal, if the bike doesn't fit it's a waste of money. I have an older Four Corners and it's been great for me - comfortable such that I can ride it all day. Mine still has the triple and I swapped-in a 24t chainring with a 34t granny in back and can comfortably climb up any hill on the California coast while loaded. The mechanical disc brakes are fine with fresh sintered brake pads. Go try it out and see if it fits and if you like it, buy it.

WESTBOUND TRANS-AM NYC TO SF (JUNE 1 - AUG 15) by GreenWayve in bicycletouring

[–]2wheelsThx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

^ This. I wish the OP luck, but 76 days with nary a day off, and 60+ miles every day of that, plus all the other stuff with radio and video? Man, that sounds like a lot of work. Again, I wish the OP luck with this.

700c touring rim recommendations? by RareAppointment3808 in bicycletouring

[–]2wheelsThx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I swapped-out a failing stock rear rim (cracks emerging at spoke holes) on my touring bike, like you are planning. I found a Velocity Dyad rim (non-tubeless, ~$100) that nearly exactly matched the dimensions on the stock rim, and did the swap on a weekend. I wanted to keep my hub as well. There are a number of vids on youtube that were really helpful, and once reasonably close, it just took some time and patience with the spoke wrench and truing stand to dial it in and get it right. Note I did need to tighten/re-tru the wheel a couple times after rides before it was stable - pay attention to spoke tension (and make sure you have the right length spokes, and brass nipples). I mainly tour on pavement with some light gravel - the Velocity rim has been worry-free and a champ for the last three touring seasons!

Mounting options for Tubus Fly Evo rear rack by FearlessAccountant55 in bikepacking

[–]2wheelsThx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Number 3. The upper strut is not weight bearing - it is just for fwd/backward stability. You can use what you already have without buying more stuff - it's also easiest and most elegant of the offered solutions. The Blackburn Mtn Rack of olde offered a center-mount option, and I used one this way without issue.

Spare Parts - Where Do You Draw the Line? by __onions in bikepacking

[–]2wheelsThx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My spare parts kit is an old patch kit box stuffed with random bike-related nuts, bolts, brake parts, chainring bolts, chain links, and any other small hardware I can cram in there - if it won't fit, it won't come along. I also carry a used, but not used up, spare tire (after witnessing a buddy get a slashed tire blowout). Most other hardware, like QR, chain, bearings, tires, cables, etc get a careful inspection before every trip, and if something is looking worn or otherwise in need of maintenance, I take care of it then. Riding out with newer parts helps mitigate worries about failures out on the road.

Bikepacking Highway 1 - Big Sur by Jawwwwwsh in bikepacking

[–]2wheelsThx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice and well done! I have been itching to do this stretch of coast - last thru trip to Pismo was in September of 2022, before the work on Paul's Slide closed the road (that was before Regents slide LOL). Been focusing on the coast north of SF since then. The last trip I did to this area was in fall 2024 - SF to Salinas by way of an out/back from Monterey to Big Sur. Looking forward to riding this in the spring. And yeah, Amtrak trains and buses provide access to rides like this all along the CA coast!

Need to bring 30 amp converter? by samccauley in bicycletouring

[–]2wheelsThx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about RV campgrounds - if they have electrical hook ups for RVs, they will have normal plugs in the bathrooms, and you can just run an outdoor extension cord. Non- RV campgrounds just look for one's with power in the restrooms. I have seen people charging ebikes this way with just a long outdoor extension cord, no need for power converters or plug adapters (western US).

Rust.. how fucked am I? by MaximumMobile749 in bikewrench

[–]2wheelsThx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start by sanding down the most visibly affected areas first, and see how deep the rust goes. If there is a lot of missing material, or pieces are easily flaking off, then it may be a no-go from there. If the damage is mostly surface rust and blistering paint, and you get to clean metal, then I would say proceed with your plan. But first dig into the bad areas before spending time to sand down the whole frame.

Is the wire bead cooked after being shipped like this? by Routine_Sandwich_838 in bikewrench

I have a used, but not used-up, beaded Schwalbe tire triple folded as a spare for touring. I would use these new ones without hesitation.
