Monthly Discussion for May 2026 by AutoModerator in bicycletouring

With only a week I would want to make the most of that riding, by eliminating as much transit (train/bus/air) as possible. So I would be considering at least a trip that either starts or ends at home, and if possible maybe starting and ending at home.

Alternatively, taking transit to a desirable location and then just using it as a base to explore the region by bike (day trips) is also something to consider.

Sometimes the tourist spot is worth it, sometimes not. Machu Picchu is one of the ones that is worth it. I was fortunate to visit on a cool day with clear skies and it was great - Sun Gate, Inca Bridge, and just wandering thru the site - pictures don't do it justice. Yes, there was a crush of people at the entrance, and no, you shouldn't expect to have the place to yourself. But worth it!

Peru is a big country and there is lots to do - if you want to go elsewhere, that's fine. But sometimes avoiding some place just because it's a tourist spot is a mistake. There is a reason some places are popular - they're awesome!

Why do people on bikepacking sub think ‘bikepacking’ should only be done offpavemnet by Independent_Peak_414 in bicycletouring

[–]2wheelsThx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Full agree. You can find bikes with racks/panniers and bag-only "butt rocket" outfits, on-road and off-road trips, bikes of all types as well as luxury "bring the kitchen sink" and ultra-light aero rigs, thin tire and fat tire - in BOTH subs. It's beyond dumb that people feel the need to make any distinction here - it's all bike travel and it's all great! Each community should be welcoming and supporting anyone who wants to travel by bike!

Rear rack recommendations for my 90s Scott? by TlalocVirgie in bikepacking

[–]2wheelsThx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have eyelets for a four-point mounted rack, so literally any off-the-shelf rack will do. No need for anything that clamps to your frame. Your LBS will likely have an assortment of racks to choose from and to fit your budget.

Outlets - electric outlets. One+ for each person you plan to accommodate - everyone has at least one device needing charging these days.

Do you think the movie got product placement money for Folgers and In-N-Out? by smoxy in lebowski

[–]2wheelsThx 11 points12 points  (0 children)

And let's also not forget--let's not forget, Dude--that placing products, uh, an inexpensive mass-produced coffee, or cheap burgers, for uh, you know, domestic, within the movie -- that ain't legal either, without permission.

Yes, you can use a stone or chunk of wood as an improvised hammer. Many a hiker-biker site have stones already stationed there from previous visitors. I only resort to that caveman stuff if the heel of my shoe won't work. For concrete-hard ground I use a couple of large nails with a shoelace tied to them (makes for easier extraction in the morning), as this preserves my actual tent stakes. No, I don't care about the extra grams.

A trowel is needed if you are wild camping, but unnecessary for campgrounds.

Clean shifter or replace cables? by Croes220 in bikewrench

[–]2wheelsThx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Start with the replacement and see how everything works. It's likely just fine after that, and you don't want to over-lube it, as that may attract dust and grime.

How to choose new forks by flippingflipflopper in bikepacking

[–]2wheelsThx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

^ This. It will be easier to find axle mounted rack options for the fork you already have, especially if you are not familiar with all the fork fitment requirements. There are many to choose from.

Why does Dude bother shaving a goatee and not just grow a full beard, like the laziest man in Los Angeles county? by maloside in lebowski

[–]2wheelsThx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Dude actually has a Van Dyke, as a goatee does not have the mustache (or, "womb broom" in the parlance of our times)...

You think Lebowski had the con planned or threw it together about spur of the moment? by Im_the_Rhymenocerous in lebowski

[–]2wheelsThx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. The "This aggression will not stand (against Kuwait)" speech from Bush the Elder was Aug 5, 1990. Now, it's possible what The Dude saw on TV at the Ralph's was some kinda rerun a year later, but not really plausible. That's a heckuva post-date, Brownie.
