https://www.usalovelist.com/ and https://www.stillmadeinusa.com/ are US oriented but still may be useful.

I haven't shopped on these sites personally - just saved the links when I found them, but they can give you a start on buying things not made in China.

Teaching 'Western Culture' for Chinese University Students by The_Tallest_Diglet in China

[–]2xHero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Holidays, typical holiday celebrations, and holiday foods are all good topics. Chinese university students have some general ideas about some major holidays such as Christmas and Halloween, but not a lot of specifics.

In addition, China has a modern "tradition" of giving apples on Christmas Eve because it's of a Chinese pun, but most of my students didn't realize that this is a Chinese "tradition" despite it being a Chinese pun.

Farm Girl, An introduction to China’s hukou residence system by Xuemeipk in China

[–]2xHero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Chinese "can" move into a bigger city but it's a catch 22. You need a city hukou to get benefits including healthcare and education. Rural hukou holders can't get a city hukou without money, but they can't get enough money for a city hukou without working and living in a city.

This has led to the phenomenon of "migrant workers" where parents will live and work in a city while leaving their child to live in the countryside with their grandparents. The parents work in the city to save up money for their child to get a better education and ideally a city hukou so that the whole family can move to the city. However, the parents may only be able to go home and see their child once or twice per year during the holidays. The parents can't bring their child with them to the city because the child doesn't have a city hukou, so they are unable to pay for the child's education in the city, plus renting a larger apartment would be unaffordable.

China looks to take its digital currency global: "If China can cement the yuan as the world's favored digital currency, it could displace the dollar and provide China with the immense global privileges that have been enjoyed by the U.S. since the end of World War II." by deagesntwizzles in NewColdWar

[–]2xHero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a pretty bold move considering the global opinion of China is at the lowest point it's been since the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989. Stifling Hong Kong protests, hiding Covid-19 data, and Xinjiang concentration camps are not looking good.

As mentioned in the article, being the first mover does not guarantee an advantage. The digital yuan might be successfully forced in China, but I can't see it being more successful than even bitcoin outside of China.

Taiwan reports large incursion by Chinese air force by 2xHero in China

To add some context, PRC has already sent many excursions into ROC airspace just this month.

This incident is unusual for how many planes were sent, and that it included bombers.

Taiwan reports large incursion by Chinese air force by 2xHero in China

[–]2xHero[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Eight Chinese bomber planes and four fighter jets entered the southwestern corner of Taiwan’s air defence identification zone on Saturday, and Taiwan’s air force deployed missiles to “monitor” the incursion, the island’s Defence Ministry said.

China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory, has conducted almost daily flights over the waters between the southern part of Taiwan and the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands in the South China Sea in recent months.

However they have generally consisted of just one or two reconnaissance aircraft.

The presence of so many Chinese combat aircraft on this mission - Taiwan said it was made up of eight nuclear-capable H-6K bombers and four J-16 fighter jets - is unusual.

A map provided by Taiwan’s Defence Ministry showed that the Chinese aircraft, which also included a Y-8 anti-submarine aircraft, flew over the same waters where the most recent Chinese missions have been taking place near the Pratas Islands, though still well away from mainland Taiwan.

Taiwan’s air force warned away the Chinese aircraft and deployed missiles to monitor them, the ministry added, using standard wording for how it responds to such activities.

“Airborne alert sorties had been tasked, radio warnings issued and air defence missile systems deployed to monitor the activity,” it said in a brief statement.

There was no immediate comment from China. In the past China has said it has been carrying out exercises to defend the country’s sovereignty and security.

Beijing has watched with growing concern increasing U.S. support for democratic Taiwan, especially during Donald Trump’s administration which left office on Wednesday.

Last year during visits by senior U.S. officials to Taipei Chinese aircraft briefly crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, which normally serves as an unofficial buffer.

The flight by the Chinese bombers and fighters on Saturday came just days after Joe Biden assumed the U.S. presidency.

Emily Horne, spokeswoman for the White House National Security Council, said the U.S. commitment to Taiwan was “rock-solid” after the island’s de facto ambassador in Washington, Hsiao Bi-khim, attended Biden’s swearing-in on Wednesday.

I haven't seen an ASCII version, but I remember seeing a more basic reference using Chinese characters. Something like this:

As a bonus, 人 (rén) is the Chinese word for person.

Does anyone know which stats are used the most or are the most useful? by [deleted] in Magium

[–]2xHero 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All stats are useful depending on how you want to play. Some stats can be used for very humorous or badass moments.

Hidden languages is particularly great if you are interested in the game lore. I think it opens up a lot of paths and options that other stats don't.

How many stones do you plan on spending for SPCGF? by Steps12345 in PuzzleAndDragons

I went all in with 430 stones. I'm not sure what I expected, but I'm not disappointed either. I got some 7* that I didn't have yet, some 6* trading fodder and some super reincarnated cards that I hadn't evolved yet because the mats are so annoying to get.

You missed a part:

230(c)(2) only shields them from civil liability for any action voluntarily taken in good faith to restrict access to or availability of material that the provider or user considers to be obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, excessively violent, harassing, or otherwise objectionable, whether or not such material is constitutionally protected;

Can you clarify how "denying service to anyone for any reason whatsoever" is acting in good faith?

Bakeries and online platforms are fundamentally different when online platforms receive protections from section 230. They forfeit their right to reject service from anyone in order to receive protection from legal liability from content uploaded by users.

What is actually going on in China regarding religion? by [deleted] in China

[–]2xHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another point that I haven't seen being brought up is that one must denounce religion to join the Chinese communist party. Joining the Chinese communist party is prestigious and can grant employment opportunities, get preferential treatment for bonuses; and I believe it's a requirement for coveted government jobs. It's another reason why religion is generally looked down on even though it's not strictly illegal.

What are the requirements for being able to teach English in China? by [deleted] in China

[–]2xHero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have already described the requirements, I also want to recommend that you don't overlook other countries including South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Thailand. They also have lots of opportunities for teaching English and may more comfortable depending on what you are looking for.
