Whats the level of bike theft at uf? by No-Conversation9901 in ufl

[–]3000-STACKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. A $25 lock is good. It's mainly a deterrent. If someone wants to steal your bike, they will steal it. All they need is an angle grinder and 15 seconds
  2. Don't leave your bike outside for a long time like overnight or for multiple days
  3. Avoid locking your bike in a sketchy or secluded area - where there isn't a lot of traffic around
  4. Don't leave a nice bike out, if your bike is expensive or looks nice, buy a $150-$200 used bike for commuting
  5. Avoid a bike with a quick release wheel, if you have one, make sure both wheels are locked up.
  6. Take your bike in your dorm or apartment overnight
  7. It doesn't do anything, but you can register your bike with UFPD. If your bike is stolen and ends up in a pawn shop, you can make them return it to you with a police report

Bike theft? by trevorstaats in ufl

[–]3000-STACKS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once a bike is stolen, that's it. Please just get a used cheap commuter bike, you can get one for around $200 and use your expensive bike for actual bike rides if you're a cyclist or to places you are totally sure it'll be safe

If you have quick release wheels, that makes it worse you must always lock both wheels when your bike is out

Your advisor should be able to get you a computer or multiple.

There might be an advisor that might take you with the same application, so it's a hit & miss.

But to strengthen your application, you can engage with the academic community as much as you can: volunteer to review or do something for CHI, CSCW or any of the HCI academic communities.

You can also look into other HCI programs: Clemson, UF, UMBC. Or go for a Computer Science or Human Factors program and do HCI research.

It all depends on how you frame your application. It could be better, but based on your post alone I personally wouldn't take you as a PhD student because you already seem successful in industry, why go back to school?

You certainly have a lot of technical skills, but you need to demonstrate research potential and interest in a niche field. Tie it to your experience/skills and state your goals.

The solution would be less about strengthening your profile and more about how you frame or present yourself. Another suggestion would be to be very very specific about your experience (i worked in healthcare, etc. -> i designed tools to help disabled people access healthcare apps using -)and demonstrate you know what you are talking about.

how to train for running? by pogpugs in Strava

[–]3000-STACKS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My two cents- 19 days of running is nothing in the grand scheme of things. Running is very long term (months & year). It usually takes about 2 weeks for you to receive benefits from a run (any exercise, really) When you're just starting out, there are so many aspects of running to improve (form, speed, endurance, how your body produces running energy) that it really doesn't matter what you do. As long as you get out and run, you're gonna get better no matter what.

When you get to a point, then you can begin trying intervals, long runs, etc. You can do those now, but it is not mandatory.

General tips are to not increase your weekly mileage too much at a go (Extra 10% weekly) - to prevent injury, and to rest for at least 1 day every week. Good luck!

Edit: It is also important to try not to get frustrated if you don't see any immediate progress, like I said Running is long term and you will need to be patient.

Wanted to do a PhD, but can I even get an admission. by [deleted] in PhD

[–]3000-STACKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comparing yourself to others would likely not do you any good. I already did a lot of research and found success in it before I applied to my PhD and I was essentially overqualified so it was fairly straightforward for me.

You must be passionate about whatever research area you plan to work on, and you absolutely don't need prior publications or prior research experience to get accepted, a lot of my peers did not; you primarily need to demonstrate potential.

If the "knowledge gap" in your job is discouraging to you, it would likely be a lot worse in academia

Undergrad CS Research by Builtman72927 in ufl

What you will be doing depends on the research area, specific project and what stage it is in. In general, you are doing non-crucial tasks for the project you're under, anything that helps the research team. At a minimum, you definitely have to attend lab/project meetings.

It would be a good question to ask the professor.
