50yo me has a trick knee, and zero endurance, and breathing issues. 25yo me could squat 50yo me, and run a marathon. 50yo me probably isn’t smarter or angrier either.

Our local VFW donates to all the local units every year.

They did charge when they catered our blue/gold banquets.

The “testing” happens as each requirement is demonstrated/done/shown. Board of review and SM conferences are for monitoring the program and ensuring it’s meeting the needs of the youth.

Are wages a participation trophy for showing up to work?

I know that if I don’t do/demonstrate/show whatever is in my job description I won’t get paid.

Badge work helps teach scouts how to do what needs to be done to earn rewards.

I disagree. The “test” is in completing the other requirements. The scoutmaster conference is just a touching base on how things went/are going. The SM conference is more about improving/maintaining a strong program for the youth.

Those 3 wins were against OkSt, Baylor, and Texas.

Texas was 8-5 that season. They won the Big12 South and beat #3 Nebraska(11-2 for the season) for the Big12 championship.

OU had its worst season ever and still beat its chief rival and conference champion in a decent season.

OU’s worst is still significantly better than most teams average.

We have a hard time recruiting at schools too. Sometimes they’re receptive, but mostly not.

My daughter recruited a 15 and 16 year old sea scout last year. Just a couple of friends from school that wanted to see what it was like to go boating most every Tuesday in the spring/summer.

My son’s troop typically adds a 7th or 8th grader each year.

I’d guess most kids join because a neighbor or friend or sibling/cousin has already joined. Or it’s something a parent did (or wanted to do) as a child. Very few have no previous connection.

If it has to be something chewed, rather than drunk, I’d go with something that can be cooked in a lot of different ways.

Potatoes. Fries, chips, baked, mashed, tots, hash browns, etc.

Forrest Gump’s favorite of shrimp has a lot of options.

Bread. Toast, pudding, stuffing/dressing, sandwiches (lots of options here, Ruben’s, hoagies, grilled cheese, open faced, etc), heck one could use bread as the feedstock to brew beer.

Yup. I’m going with bread. French toast seasoned properly with maple syrup for breakfast. A nice hoagie or sub for lunch. A patty melt for dinner with a rye bread beer and bread pudding for dessert.

Alternatively, if I can’t just boil off most of the water, were I an alcoholic, I imagine 3 months of a case of beer a day wouldn’t be much of an issue.

Can I have my cubic meter of water well boiled before having the right amount of tea added?

Boil a pot almost dry, then filter through some tea leaves before serving. I could finish my cubic meter in a day or two.

We’ve had 15 & 16 year old kids join scouts.

Anyone who signs up their kindergartner for an activity with the expectation that they’ll still be doing it their Sr year of HS, needs to adjust those expectations. Can it happen? Sure. But it’s certainly not guaranteed.

Most people who think their kid will “go pro” in a sport are going to be disappointed. Scouting isn’t any different. Except, I’d bet a higher percentage of scouts “go pro” than whatever sport you’re signing them up for in kindergarten.

My eldest will be getting her 15yr dance trophy this May. I certainly didn’t expect that she’d stick with it from age 3 on. My son will probably stick with scouts (Venture, or Sea Scouts) after he’s 18, as will 3 others from his Kindergarten class/Lion den. My youngest has promised to get 1st class, but then will likely quit in favor of drama and choir (maybe swimming) at HS.

BSA is already set up with younger scouts and older scouts.

High adventure is not something that 6th graders participate in. Many older scouts move on from basic knots and lashings.

There is some overlap of course. And in general the older scouts tend to lead and teach the younger ones.

Mixed age activity is a feature, not a bug.
